To clarify: I am finishing my MA now. I never bothered to go to conferences or fret over publications and I don't think it has hurt me at all. I believe that the most important thing about an application is the demonstration of potential. They'd rather take someone with nothing on their CV but who seems to know what academic discourse is and how it works, than someone with a flush CV but lacking in the ability to articulate themselves well.

Looks like there are two now....

I just posted my acceptance. A strange morning, but a good one.

There was a post a while back about the UCLA committee meeting Feb 6. I don't know if that was a final or preliminary meeting. I'm also pretty excited about UCLA.....

There are currently two acceptances for Duke English up on the results board. Does anyone know if that's the end of Duke's acceptances? Any information at all?

So, will today be an eventful day or a day of painful suspension? -
So it's Feb 4 and no news of interviews. Might it be possible that Stanford gave out interviews and they happened not to fall to anyone on the board?

the hour is getting late.

I think this helps (or starts to) to put to rest the idea that it is necessary. And though it's an admittedly low sample size, it doesn't even seem help that much. I suspect it's an older model that is now a bit outdated. The only professors who have recommended me to do it were several decades from the PhD process. Anyone who had received their degree in the last 10 years suggested it was a potentially disastrous move, and at best, meaningless.

Where my Duke applicants at?!

I see that Duke English has two 'Accepts' on the board. Maybe that means they are done for the year? Let's say 1/3 of all students are on this website, so that would mean they have taken 6 so far. It could reasonably be the whole class. EDIT: Didn't mean to be a total downer. Just trying to figure out what's going on in Durham. -
Anyone want to claim that NYU?

Reaching out to the international students begs a further question: What is the utility for a school to make decisions and then wait to send them out? Maybe the entire faculty lurks on these boards and just loves watching us squirm? -

Realistically, if we assume that the person who calls the applicant to offer admission is a professor who works in the same field as the applicant, then there's no reason to panic. Your professor may not be in the office today, he/she may be teaching all day, etc. -

I am struck by the utter opacity of this process: maybe by now, everyone who has been accepted has received calls. Maybe calls will be going out for the next 3 weeks. It could all be over or just starting. Sorry to vent. Again, if you're reading this, congratulations to those who have been offered a spot! -

I know this question is asked a lot...but this is for literature or English? -

Thanks for the confirmation! Have they reached out to anyone yet? -

Rejection Feedback
0000000000AAA replied to lolopixie's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Another thing to remember is that you can essentially be rejected for no reason, or no quantifiable reason. If a committee is considering 500 applicants and looking for 10 admits, they don't divide them into accept and reject piles: they pick 10 to offer admittance to. Rejection is a passive act; it is really better described as non-admittance. So the reason that anyone is rejected may have nothing to do with your application and everything to do with someone else's. A phrase in the statement, a novel paragraph on the third page of writing sample, a fond memory of one of your letter recommendation writers can make all the difference. -

By Stanford do you mean interview notifications or responses? I have a feeling they are forgoing the interview this year (blessedly).
