What is it like to be the only student in one's class?
Kwest replied to cicada's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I thought it might also be worthy to note that even if a program accepts 3 students it doesn't mean that 3 will attending. Like TakeruK said, you may want to contact the other prospective students to see if they plan on accepting. If it turns out they're not, you have the same scenario at both schools of an incoming class of one. -
Anyone has ever written an article before applying to PhD pograms?
Kwest replied to Arezoo's topic in Linguistics Forum
I applied with only a BA in linguistics and got into half of the programs I applied to, all phd. I had no publications, presentations or conferences and I have been out of school since 2011 working a non-related day job. I had an un-credited undergrad lab assistant gig and I attended an lsa SI. My undergrad wasn't great, but I still turned out ok lol. It seems to me, that all you need to do is convince them that you can do it. If that's by way of publications, great...if it's by other means, that's great as well. -
yes...just read this...but it does seem to be a little more rare...

imho I think its a good sign! They'll be able to look at your complete application instead of waiting for the official transcripts which means they can come to a decision faster. I hope you hear from them soon with positive news!

Yes I've got two acceptances this past week! I'm so relieved...and pumped!

I'm so glad that I've started getting some responses back! As everyone knows, waiting is torture.

I was more speechless when I got mine lol...

Oh in that case, maybe you could contact them (your dept.) to modify your application...? I don't know how that would seem...maybe other readers have suggestions?
-
I pretty much turned all of mine in early so that I wouldn't be agonizing over them...then again, I had a whole year to work on my application to make sure every detail was as good as it could be.

I've had no word from UF either I thought I'd toss my hat in this ring too since I applied to UF (and to add some field diversity! I'm going for Ling PhD) for ling, the deadline was Dec 15th for funding and April 1st for non-fund applicants...so I fear I might have a long wait.

Which system?? lol my system of not checking or the system for the application status? I don't think I trust either!
-
I realize that since I have received notice from two of my schools already, this may seem pointless, but.... I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't check my email (obsessively) or application statuses until February. I wanted to give my self some time to just not think about it. It was really working well since I kind of forgot about them. I'm still keeping my promise for the other schools though. However, while writing this post, I'm getting anxious about those other schools and now I want to go check them! (I mean...what if they need something from me?) Will power don't fail me now!

Presumably they're sorry since some people haven't heard anything yet? so not really a "sorry about getting contacted but sorry you haven't heard anything yet" That's my guess.
-
I know, sorry!!!! But it probably doesn't happen too often, it's fine to go outside for a few minutes

I happened to get one today, an email and it's Sunday. I was pretty surprised....
-
yeah, that's kind of why I wanted to get it in somehow...I really only have 2 lines about it. I couldn't spare more room. My SOP is 2 and half pages and I'm really trying to keep it short...I was trying for just 2 pages but I just can't do it! lol

Thanks. Great advice. It just seemed like something I should squeeze in. I think I'll just talk about the measurement techniques I picked up there. Not too word consumptive but hopefully informative.

So, I attended the LSA summer institute (boulder) and I don't know if I should mention it in my SOP or just leave it for my CV. It was a great experience (obviously ;P) but I don't know if I should work it into my limited word space. I don't want to just list of the classes, but I did get to do and learn about some pretty cool speech manipulation and perception studies while there so maybe I could mention that? But I don't know...That's why I'm coming you! should I or shouldn't I?
