  1. i agree about the first one being the hardest. i'm it's easier said than done, but i dont think we should beat ourselves over the head for it. if it makes anyone feel better, ive decided to think of my app for the mtl program as a donation to the dept. and forget about my chances of getting in, lol.
  2. hi there! looks likely that i'll be going to an ma program next year (if i get in at all, ah!), but i was curious about the phd program at brown. did anyone here apply there? i dont know why i never really considered the school before, but looking at their faculty i see a lot of interests lining up. so the question is: for those who applied to brown, what are your various areas of interest?
  3. thank you guys for such great answers! it really does help put things into perspective. and i'm definitely reconsidering holding off on applying until i'm done with the masters. it does make sense that if the whole point is to improve academically, i'd have to go through the year to get some writing done and build those relationships with professors. i had thought of doing an MA then perhaps applying for the whitney isp (ps. does anyone know about THAT program? could not find any info on it anywhere except the tiny bit on the official website) to do some more independent research, but wasn't sure if i should hold out EVEN longer to apply for my phd. but after reading your replies, it seems like a reasonable option. as for how american institutions view MAs... i can't honestly say i know for sure. but my inclination is to think that schools are probably glad that you spent the year trying to become more knowledgeable in the field and acclimate yourself to academia, rather than sitting on your butt and doing nothing until you decide to apply for a phd. not everybody applies/gets in right out from undergrad, so i imagine at the very least it can't hurt to show that you've tried and are now more familiar with what you want, and still have the desire to continue your education in that field. thanks again for the wonderful insight! it was so helpful. and i'm definitely feeling reassured about going this route after being rejected from all those phd programs lol.
  4. for those of you who have mentioned that you did a master's program before applying for your phd, how do you feel it helped you academically? also, was your program one year or two? if it was only one, so you feel it still made a significant impact? i am currently thinking of pursuing the same course of action, and wondering what some of the benefits are, and would love to hear your thoughts. thanks
  5. hi abner same boat in regards to waiting for williams. feel like i should begin to start accepting ive been rejected across the board. *sigh hopefully that person was just notified super early? lol
  6. thanks lunalee! im getting relaly nervous, with only two schools left congrats lch212!!! you must be very excited!
  7. blancdexin - yes, i was quite curious to see where you were planning to study because i havent see anyone do that that i've noticed. its definitely an exciting field though. good luck with pursuing that one! lunalee - congrats on the yale acceptance! im still waiting and i feel like im going to hurl my insides out.
  8. lol i empathize about the languages. so many language requirements so little time. well so many if i get into a school this year that is. augh!
  9. elusive muse - yes i definitely agree! the anxiety has overtaken my life. i definitely need the referesher to pull myself through this emotional chaos. im interested in the image and the ontology of different mediums of image (namely paintings, photographs, and the moving image). id like to focus on doing some type of comparative studies between contemporary east asian cinema/art and colonial ethnographic imagery. i guess thats a little fuzzy. but what the heck, that's what im going to school for lol. blacdexin - where are you hoping to study contemporary chinese work? good to hear others' interests. takes my mind off the firefox's blue circular arrow for at least a sec.
  10. hi edwaiting, yes, this was for the ed. school. me and my friend applied to different programs though. im not applying for an ed degree this year, but i know how you feel about not wanting to hear. im ready to pull my hair out!
  11. hi all i applied last year, and thought this might help you out (or induce more anxiety. not sure which, and im sorry if its the latter ) i got my letter of acceptance on the 14th of march, and my friend who applied got his on the 17th. so hold on to you panties. could take some time! good luck!!!!
  12. hi all! i just found this site amidst my anxiety about waiting for the remaining letters. i'm glad i found it, but also glad i didn't find it earlier since it probably would have consumed my life, lol. but its good to brew your paranoia w/ others sometimes. i'm waiting for two, yale and williams, and have a vast sea of rejections. i'm trying to (re)assure myself and others by throwing some facts out there. i've been in two one year masters programs these past two years, and have noticed all my rejections have come earlier, and my acceptances much later, so im crossing my fingers for the ones that haven't come yet! and working in an admissions dept. right now, it seems that for some schools there is unfortunately no rhyme or reason. esp. for those comprising of multiple programs. its just a matter of efficiency of the committee and how the school runs. oh well. :/ good luck to all of you and hope we all hear the good news soon (if we haven't already. congrats to those of you who have .)
