  1. Ancient political thought and analytic normative theory.
  2. Stanford is the place that's really terrifying me right now. They could call any of us at any moment.
  3. Happy new year to you, too. I can't speak Chinese though.
  4. There are things that might override a Fulbright, though. My significant other was unable to get a visa to go to Finland, so I turned down my Fulbright. I haven't regretted it and now I can say "I turned down a Fulbright", which just sounds bad ass.
  5. I check the site 20 times a day for new information but you shouldn't bother checking your email constantly for about another week. In a week from now, however, it is normal.
  6. I just submitted my 1000 word one everywhere. We'll see how it works out for me.
  7. The trailer looked so bad for that!
  8. Same. Why would they do that?! Edit: And as for netflix, they just added Street Sharks, if anybody remembers that show. Higher in quality is BBC's Jekyll.
  9. Congratulations! What's your top choice, fellow theorist (which I say like it's a cult)?
  10. I'm happy to take a look at it, if you'd like. I've been staying up until 4 in the morning with nothing to do lately. PM me for my email address. The first two parts shouldn't concern you, though. They are looking for potential, not perfection.
  11. Why are you nervous about your WS?
  12. I am going to have a heart attack before the 26th.
  13. What are essential readings for theory? Articles are also good. Edit: I should say that I mean what are essential readings beyond the typical Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Locke, Hobbes, Rawls, Nozick. What about, say, Sandel? Is Sandel essential reading?
  14. I don't have any formal training, but I have about two semesters worth of independent study. I've also read both the Euthyphro and Cleitophon in Greek, with the aid of a commentary.
  15. Stanford is tied (with Princeton) as my top choice, so I've already entered freak out mode. Both are really good fits for me... gah.
  16. I feel like a jackass for doing this, but it's kinda funny: I've never before met a necrotic perfectionist. As for your chances, I don't know much aside from what I've read on here, but your Q might hurt you but if they can get past that, then you have a strong profile. Do you have much research experience? When you say published, what do you mean?
  17. I'm applying to both and seeing what happens.
  18. Over-hyphenation also looked weird, so I had to get rid of that.
  19. Then I feel bad for your subfield. Seriously though, 'fun' was probably a bad choice words. I should have said that it's a journal people keep up with (according to psjr) even if they aren't working on that particular topic.
  20. Thanks. I'm pretty excited to see it in print. What's especially nice is that it's a journal that people in the subfield tend to read for fun when it comes out, so the adcom member in my subfield may read the article before they get to my application. I imagine that might help--unless they hated the article. I swear, I'm having nightmares about the SOP; it was so bad that it woke me up. I had a follow up nightmare about zombies, but slept right through that. In the opposite vein of working on it until I bust, I'd like to also note Berkeley's diversity statement. I wrote that in 10 minutes, had my girlfriend and a friend look at it quickly, then submitted it. Perhaps I didn't take it seriously enough, but that seems like the type of thing that doesn't really matter.
  21. For diminishing returns: I worked on my SOP for about a month or so and stopped when it was approved by a few of my professors with no suggestions for revision. As for the writing sample, I had some of the mental burden lifted since it is coming out in a well regarded journal in December; I just got an advance copy of the article from the journal and am using that. I couldn't edit if I wanted (and I kind of do want to change how a few things are worded here and there, but whatever).
  22. There's one of these in the general waiting it out section of the forum, but let's have one for political science in particular. I just submitted all my applications yesterday. It's going to be a long few months.
  23. I am going to be submitting my applications soon and am satisfied with my SOP. But before I submit it, I was hoping someone would take a final look. Anyone up to it? I'm applying for political theory.
  24. Oh yes, PM me if you are interested.
