  1. I think it's what you make of it. But, some schools have better facilities then others - and this could contribute to your degree and research. In regards to which one adds value to your Phd - I can't really answer that. I suppose it depends on what you plan on doing with your Phd. Some schools offer better connections then others. UofT has the prestige - but York is known for research and has much better funding. Ryerson is good for the practical element - but does not offer a lot of funding for Phd students. Or just not as much as York does for the ComCult program.
  2. Everyone is a leader in their own way. I think the question is asking - how have you taken an initiative? Think about leadership qualities and how they relate to the work you have done.
  3. I started my undergrad at 28 and was a bit worried about having classes with much younger students. Turned out that most people thought I was 21 or 22. Also, it turned out that there were many students my age and in the end age was not really an issue. There was such a wealth of knowledge and perspective from most students in my courses and age had nothing to do with it. I am 31 now and will be starting a Masters in the fall. You will most likely meet others in your age group. I have made some very rewarding friendships with those younger than me. It's true in the above post, don't kid yourself with the idea that age will demonstrate that you know more. You're on pretty much the on the same page. If you got into grad school, then your most likely passionate about learning and so are those from younger age brackets.
  4. I did my undergrad in Human Rights and Equity Studies. Recently, I was accepted to a MA in Communication and Culture. My research focus is information and communication technologies and their link to the advancement of women's human rights. I made this link in my SOP.

  6. I have a friend who graduated with a MA in Art History and is now a Director of Programs at a museum. So, I disagree with above posts to rethink your your Masters. Honestly, I think $18000 isn't bad in the long run. If you prepare yourself professional; work as an intern at museums or galleries you will be able to get a job and pay off the loan.
  7. Yes, I would go all the way to PHD. I love, love learning. But, I'd do as those above me - and establish a NGO and create empowerment programs for local communities that help to rise above systemic barriers. However, I will still be doing this. Just the extra funds would save time from grant writing and such.
  8. Well - I'd love to be eligible for funding....but the amount of Full-Time funding is way less then I receive working full-time. I did a trade off analysis and it made more sense to attend part-time. Though, there are busaries and scholarships for part-time students. So, we are not entirely out of luck. I know some people who have children and are attending part-time as it is difficult to balance full-time grad studies and all the resposibilities of parenthood.
  9. So, there have been many posts related to full-time graduate studies but not so much related to part-time grad studies. Perhaps, you are like me and want to continue working full-time or maybe you are a parent and part-time is the only feasible way to obtatin a graduate level degree. I found an article that provides some great advice for those who would like some insight into work/life/school balance: http://chronicle.com...-students/27267 . I will be attending a joint program at York/Ryerson University in Toronto for a MA in Communication and Culture - Poltics and Policy. I currently work full-time as an Administrator with a human rights education nonprofit. I did my undergrad Human Rights and Equity Studies. My main focus is gender equity and empowerment. I want to evaluate emerging technologies and assess how they affect the advancement of women in Canada and around the world. What's your story? Why are you attending grad-school part-time and what are you going for?
  10. It is possible! I graduated with a B+ average. My undergrad university does a 1-9 system. Mine was 7.25 or something. Anyways, I made it in! Anything is possible! I think it comes down to your statement of interest, your passion for the subject and what you plan to achieve with the degree, references, professional and volunteer experience,
  11. I've heard it's difficult to get into the Political Science program. But, good luck! I hope either way you will get in.
  12. I finished my undergrad in Human Rights and Equity Studies here and now a year later I will be doing a MA in Communication and Culture - Politics and Policy. This will be part time so I can continue to work full time and volunteer. I am very excited! Already thinking about the research I will be working on! You?
  13. I have been accepted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am only doing the program p/t as I cannot afford to go into poverty again. I am actually very surprised. I thought I wouldn't get in. I only applied to this one program. I can't believe it!!!!
  14. Ah Yes - CONGRATS!!! I have just checked and it still says no decision yet....Did you apply to Ryerson or York?
  15. My above comment would work in Canada. But, if you are from the US - not sure if they have post-grad programs at a college (not university). I am from the States originally - and in Canada the two are discussed as different.
  16. I suggest not giving up - and consider post graduate studies at a college. I know many people who decided to go this route after not having luck in other areas, and were happier in the end. Of course many of these studies do not focus on theory or research - and are much more applied. But, it could help you choose a direction if the university path isn't working at this time.
  17. I threw all my eggs in one basket and only applied to York for the MA. I didn't want to leave the city just yet. So, hopefully all goes well..... Good luck to everyone!
  18. Thanks for the update m.a.! I will stop checking myfile now and wait till the end of March. It was becoming obsessive!
  19. I applied to the MA ComCult program at York in January and still have not heard anything. Anyone else?
