  1. I am pretty sure I know which university this is. I also came across this question. Regardless, I copied and pasted a portion of my statement into that text box, tweaking it slightly to suit the question/fit the box. I did this for some of the other questions too, I think. For others, I simply put something along the lines of "For such and such information, please see CV/statement, forthcoming."
  2. This is difficult to answer, especially because it's not entirely clear to me what kind of writing you want to do. I suspect that both a master's degree in art history (not museum studies) with an internship or two along the way would be useful for you, possibly even necessary. You might also think about editorial work for arts-related publications that are not necessarily affiliated with a specific museum. I personally can't think of any programs that cater specifically to your career aspirations. You could seek out departments that are known to have particularly close ties to a local museum, a strong gallery of their own, and/or a strong mfa program whose students may let you write for their shows/publications. You could also look for faculty that are actively writing in such a capacity.
  3. I'm guessing that she's looking for something more like your statement of purpose, which should include a general description of your research interests; should probably not be more than 1000 words (confirm on department website); and should not include citations. You can confirm that with her. Good luck!
  4. I don't mind the formality and am actually pleased with my SoP. My writing sample, however, is a concern. I haven't got a chapter of my thesis yet to submit, so I'm using a seminar paper that I wrote a year ago. It needs work and I had to submit an less-than-ready version to Princeton yesterday. Trying not to think about it.
  5. FYI: If you are American, you can (and should) just apply for your study permit on your way into the country. (If you are not, disregard.)
  6. Just started filling in the personal information for my first application: University of Toronto. The application denotes marital status as a required field. I feel very uncomfortable with this as I would not like the fact that I am married to be held against me. Is this legal in Canada?
  7. My interest is in photography and moving image studies. I am applying to seven PhD programs, but because the selection is heavily weighted toward the unattainable I am beginning to think that I should explore more options. Any thoughts on UofR? Other suggestions?
  8. For sure, it is better than nothing! And I am applying there, too. Remember that cost of living in Toronto is quite high, though.
  9. I am an American who has attended three different Canadian Universities in two different provinces. I am not in your field, but might have some general knowledge that would be helpful to you. Bdon is right. In general, hiring institutions in the states prefer American PhDs. However, if you are still interested, the University of Toronto (my alma mater) is generally quite well-known, as are McGill and UBC. There may be some others worth considering as well. Bdon is also correct about funding. As far as I know, your tuition will be covered and you will be offered a stipend. But because international tuition is still higher, I know of at least one institution that caps the number of visa students that it will admit. So, it can be harder to get into these programs as an international student. Also, from what I have heard, UofT in particular is known for being a bit stingy. You'll get a stipend, but it will probably only be $15,000. Your options for external funding will also be limited unless you manage to get permanent residency. From what I have seen, the application deadlines for graduate degree programs generally run later here. So if you are still interested, you may have more time to pursue this option than you had thought. You know, if I haven't deterred you. I should mention that I love it here!
