  1. San Diego is also expensive relative to stipend amount.
  2. One of my apps said "your application will be evaluated in the order of submission." Not sure if that affects your odds or not. I prefer as early as possible. Also since all of mine let me submit before the LORs are submitted, which is usually the last piece.
  3. I didn't interview, but I just got an email from a program that I was on a "short" waitlist. I then did a phone interview that lasted 8 min with a program coordinator. Is that too short of a phone interview to get my hopes up. I had no prep time, it was a couple of minutes after I emailed back that I was interested.
  4. Yeah, its probably a glitch. :/ Limbo sucks!
  5. Was the UCSD Biology program deadline always today? Also does anyone know the interview dates for BMS and Biology at UCSD? Update: just saw that Biology dates are Jan 29-30 and Feb 9-10 on the website calendar
  6. You can list it as "manuscript in preparation or manuscript in submission"
  7. Depending on where you work, you might be able to take a grad level class or two to show that you can handle those level of classes. Some research institutes/universities will cover the cost for you as well. This may not help you this year, but in the future. Also consider the Subject GRE. If you kick ass on that you can show that you know the subject material well. Neuro programs are more competitive than other Biology programs, fyi....
  8. That's what I keep telling myself, lol! Also staying in the area I have experience in!
  9. Thank you! I hope so too, and if not this year, then I'm in it for the long haul!
  10. Thank You! I feel I've increased my odds by keeping my area of interest in line with my past research (cancer and immunology). NO mention of neuro!!!! Though I realize that applying to only 3 programs is a hinderance. Best I can do this year! Such a weird feeling not having the time/energy to obsess about it this year....Although the wedding is in October, so I suspect that after that I'll be obsessing again!
  11. It's preference. I'm funds limited this cycle, and my top choice in which I was almost waitlisted last year (UCSD BMS) is my main target. Then UCSD allows another application for free and TSRI is free. It's the best I can do this year. If I'm still here next cycle I plan to expand throughout CA. Also, I just took the GRE yesterday and managed to improve the bare minimum to exceed the cutoff! Not bad for one week of studying!! My verbal stayed the same at 162 (89%).
  12. What word is best to use in SOP: "labs" or "laboratories?" I feel like labs is too informal, but laboratories also sounds weird......
  13. I wasn't planning on re-taking the GRE, but now my top choice (that I was almost waitlisted for last year) now has a cutoff for GRE scores and my math is one percentage point lower than the cutoff. I'm so depressed over this. This is my third cycle and I'm just not excited about it this time around. Self-preservation?
  14. I don't see why it would be a problem. In my case, I am applying to two at UCSD (biomedical and biology) and they must be okay with it, since once you pay for one app you can submit up to 2 more free. Two years ago when I applied to Neuroscience at UCSD, the app actually said "we recommend you apply to the biology program as well." If you are worried call one or both of the programs and ask, phone calls are anonymous!!
  15. I have no knowledge of what would help for bioinformatics, but I think a class in genetics and molecular biology would be most helpful. You can try searching for bioinformatics graduate programs and call and ask (or maybe check the required undergrad courses on the website) to see what you are missing.....
  16. You rock for this!!!! Now I see what grants my POI's have!!! Let the obsessive querying begin!!!
  17. Had some downtime in the lab, so started making lists of PI's, projects, programs etc. This will be my third round! My 3.3 GPA is pulling me down, but at some point my research experience will outweigh it, as I now have 9 years!!!
  18. Rejected from UCSD. Now I just need closure from Scripps.........which probably won't happen until after the last interview date.
  19. suppposedly scripps CA is supposed to send more interviews this week.....if so they are running out of time.........I need some closure!
  20. Thanks. I put alot of special effort into that app, as I used to work there and had lots of love for its organization. Its my last chance this year and I'm already re-studying for the GRE. I just want closure!
  21. Come on Scripps. I just want to know one way or the other.....
  22. I just called, she said that the system just resets to prepare for the next year. It means nothing. She said that the committee was meeting this week and that interview invitations can go out up to the beginning of March and rejections wouldn't go out until April. I'm being a realist and studying for the GRE.........sigh..........
  23. Can you still log on to your application? I just thought I'd check and it said: "The Graduate Office has disabled logins for this account: Either the application deadline has passed, or some other administrative action has been taken." I know that this log in did not have a "status" area, but I'm wondering what this means? I'm already assuming I have no chance and have started studying for the GRE again and planning for Dec. I just want to know for sure before I pay for anything (GRE or extension classes). Maybe I'll call them.......
  24. I think for UCSD BMS waitlist means you have a chance. It was Bioinformatics that sent "wait list" to everyone. I was straight rejected from BMS and no wait list email. Hope that someone declines an interview!
  25. SDSU rejection by email.........good luck everyone......I will be back next year!
