  1. I received an acceptance email for U. Wisconsin-Madison this afternoon. It's not very high on my list but for those who are curious, visitation weekends are 2/24-26 and 3/9-11.
  2. Chemistry is one of those subjects where schools highly favor domestic students. I was actually speaking with one of my chem professors/advisors this year about this very issue. He said that the predominating opinion (and I would agree) is that it's hard for any university to justify financing a person (with upwards of $30,000/yr) who's going to take their "quality" American degree and just run back to their home country afterward. It's not to say that every international student would do this, or that any domestic applicant wouldn't, but it's much more likely that a domestic PhD student will enter the US workforce after graduating. Even so, I wish all of the international applicants the best of luck!
  3. Don't assume that at all. If you look at past years' results, you'll see that acceptances span a fairly large time period (at least through the end of February). Grad schools make decisions in waves, and each department may do thing differently. So just because pchem departments are announcing acceptances this week does not mean that you won't get one a month from now.
  4. It's not. I have an interview with UT Southwestern in early February.
  5. Seems like things have been pretty slow the past few days...
  6. I got an interview at UT-Southwestern. On the results page I erroneously put the date as 12/18, but it was actually 12/28 that I received the email.
  7. CONGRATS! What field of chemistry are you studying? (But dammit! This is the only thing I want for Christmas.)
  8. First week of November for me.
  9. Congrats! That's awesome!
  10. It would make sense for it to be early April since most grad school decisions needs to be made by the 15th.
  11. Yeah it is, but you're right. It's stupid to get my hopes up. Even so, I'm hoping to get a nice little Christmas present from them. Based on the records from the past couple years, it looks like next week would be a good bet for the first round of decisions to come out.
  12. There's nothing I want more in this world than to get an acceptance call from Scripps.
  13. The old exams will give you a good idea of what material you need to spend the most time studying. When it comes to actually studying material, honestly I found that re-reading all of my old textbooks worked best. People have even made lists in this forum about what textbooks really worked for them.
  14. That was me. I got a call today from a professor who I hadn't mentioned on my SOP. However, he said that another professor (who I had expressed interest in) was very impressed by my application. He also mentioned that this was a sort of "early-admissions" wave of acceptances that they wanted to get out before the holidays. Visitation dates are in march, but he said that they would be sending out an acceptance packet within the next couple of weeks that gives more detailed information about stipend, visits, and other administrative things. EDIT: I sent in my application the second week of November.
  15. I've heard, direct from professors, that it's best not to call attention to poor performance on the GRE unless there's a specific place in the application to address the issue. The SOP should focus on your strengths and experience.
  16. I'd rather not share all my GRE scores, but my GPA is 3.87. I have 5 years of research experience, both in industry and academia, and including two international REUs in Germany. No publications.
  17. I just got my first admittance: University of Illinois UC. I'm very surprised that any decisions were made this early, but I'm very happy to know that I've been accepted by at least one school!
  18. That's incredible! Congratulations! I can't believe decisions are already coming out.
  19. This could be a really exciting month. Looking through past records, it seems that some schools (including Scripps and Stanford) have made some acceptances in mid to late December.
  20. "Research fit" is probably only used as an indicator for grouping applicants during the admission process. Honestly, your personal statement and letters of recommendation will speak to your research experiences, and so this is probably what will be used to make the final admissions decision. Furthermore, at most universities, you'll get the chance to take part in "rotations" and your final group placement will be a result your desires + group vacancies + funding. That being said, if there is a "research fit" component of your application, I wouldn't lie. Be honest about what it is you would like to do.
  21. That's awesome ryanmor! I can't believe they've already notified you about interviews.
  22. I was very confused by this prompt as well. I ended up including them in one uploaded document, but I separated them by headings in the pdf. In retrospect, I probably should have emailed someone to clarify, but I hope what I did ends up being okay.
  23. Just about a month until the first decisions start coming out...
  24. I just submitted my application. As is usually the case, I feel like I missed something important... but hopefully it's successful. Good luck to everyone else!
  25. As of today I've submitted 9 of 13 applications. The four remaining applications, unfortunately, will not let me submit because of a bug with the GRE scores. They won't accept the revised scores because they fall outside of the old "200-800" range. It seems that they're all aware of the issue though, and are working to fix it ASAP.
