  1. My MA program requires 2 classes (6 credit hours) each semester but they suggest 3 classes (9 credit hours) each semester in order to complete the masters in 2 years. If you try to go faster than the recommended time frame by taking 4 classes (12 hours) or more, you might get out of "sync" and run into an issue where required classes are not offered when you need them and then you'll be hanging around for a semester for one class.
  2. I LOVE having dropbox on my desktop AND my laptop AND my tablet - same files/different places = always available. http://db.tt/cUNjqBpk Derek
  3. Took the test on Nov 9 and scores were just posted (expected release date was Dec 1) - looks like ETS is now on schedule. V: 159 (84%) Q: 153 (65%) AW: 4.0 (48%) Scores matched exactly to the preliminary scores reported at the end of the test. D
  4. I was given a score on the 170 scale at the end of the test - the old 800 scale wasn't even mentioned. That's why I was asking... I'm curious if the scores I got might change.
  5. Thanks for the head's up! How did your "official scores" compare to the preliminary scores that were shown at the end of the test? Did they match exactly or did they change? D
  6. I took mine on Nov 9 - my list of schools showed up last week, but my scores are still a no-show.
  7. Thanks for this info - I was curious about the timing between schools showing up and test scores appearing Amen - I traditionally test well (consistently 95+percentile) and "bombed" this compared to others (159/153) but it will be completely sufficient for what I need. D

    TAing advice

I WISH someone had done this for me! I'm getting ready to apply to grad schools and would love to be able to pick from a list of 6-10 profs who could write me a strong LOR. Could you expand on this a little? What are your suggestions? Thanks!
  9. Oh - one last thing, I will say that I never had more than a minute or so left on each section when I finished. D
  10. "Mark" and "Review" are your best friends on the Quant section - if you know that a question is going to take time, mark it, skip it, and come back to it. Take the timed practice test to get a feel for how long it takes you to go through it. I know that (for me) the questions that had data interpretation (charts, graphs etc) took more time for me to work out, so I marked all of those and went back at the end. I am better at algebra and geometry, so probabilities and interpretation were areas that I marked and came back to later. Basically, I took the test this way: algebra, geometry, evaluation, probabilities, and then finally interpretation. Reading comprehension was the same way for me - mark, skip and come back to it. The rest of the verbal was quick and easy (in a manner of speaking) - that left me plenty of time to read the horribly written reading comp questions. Hope that helps!
  11. My pencils were blue with a GRE or ETS logo on it - round, not hexagonal. Sharpened like they were going to be used for surgery. My only complaint was that the paper was a medium blue that made it very hard to read the pencil marks/writing/numbers on my paper.
  12. S - Thank you so much for your comments! I had not considered the return of members of the military and the timing of my application to the State Dept. I don't think I would have any issues in my FS app, but you never know - and the competition might be higher than I expected. I am definitely going to submit my apps to see what I get, but withhold my decisions until I see the packages and weigh that against the future possibilities. As a side note, I spoke with one of my profs who knows my work, grades and GRE and was told that I would be virtually guaranteed funding at the school. Thanks again! D
  13. Hi R - I am on 2 paths, teaching (preferably at small/community college with a masters or a university with a PhD) or the Foreign Service/State Dept - both would benefit from or require a Masters along the way. However, the local state university does not have a PhD in my chosen area so I would definitely have to to go somewhere else for a PhD. D
  14. S - Good question! I haven't thought much about that part of it. I know I should do something that would set me apart when I go to apply for grad school later, but what that is... it's unknown to me at this point. It's questions like yours that will help me flesh out my thoughts - thank you! D
  15. So here's my situation: I am a non-traditional student that returned to finish an undergrad degree (in May 2012) after almost 20 years out of school and I would like to go for a Masters. I have a wife that has a job that she doesn't want to leave yet, but will likely be ready to move on in a couple years - not to mention that we have a certain wanderlust that hits every so often and we end up moving across country for some reason. I expect I can get accepted to the graduate program at the local state school next fall and get funded however it is not a great school. And here's my question: Should I go ahead and get the masters now while the wife finishes out her time at her current job, or should I wait 2 years and apply to a better school and let that lead us to our next location? I realize there is no "right" answer, but I'm curious what others might think if they were in this situation. Thanks in advance! Derek
  16. Took mine today and it gave me my scores (which were disappointing) in the new format: V159/Q153 (my pretests were all higher than that in the low/mid 160's) However, the scores have not shown up on the ETS website yet so hopefully these are not the final scores. Derek
