Penn State (not acceptance post)
Galoup11 replied to perrykm2's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I believe visiting weekend was this weekend, FWIW. And from talking with the DGS, wait-listers can probably expect to wait right up until the deadline, or even after, before hearing one way or the other, based on prior years. -

Again, I appreciate the feedback guys, especially from people who are familiar with the process and disinterested. I get that funded Ph.Ds are no cakewalks to get, but again, I spoke pretty extensively to Dr. Blum about the internal application to the Ph.D, and it sounds like a pretty sure thing if in good academic standing. Re: objective rankings, I hear you hiphopanonymous, but I have dug into the numbers of the NRC's rankings and Kentucky seems to be on the rise over the last few years v. Maryland, and to be especially good in the categories I deem most important (Outcomes and Research Activity). Of course "objective" doesn't signify anything impartial but the general trends seem quite favorable. -

From what I can tell, Kentucky has more impressive objective rankings (I was surprised myself how competitive they are e.g. #15 overall by NRC, very good job placement stats), and they have two professors who are extremely knowledgable of and influential in my fields of study. In terms of MA v. Ph.D, from what I can tell almost anyone who finishes their MA at Kentucky in good standing gets admitted into their Ph.D program (with funding), so I'm not too worried about that either. This is all of course up for debate, but I believe Kentucky has a better program in general and specifically a better fit with my interests. I'm open to hear second opinions, though, as I liked Maryland a lot too (frankly I've liked everywhere I've visited), and it's closer to my home. -

Went to the visiting day yesterday, gorgeous campus (library is beautiful) and really like the program even more now. Of my accepted schools, it's now definitely my clear #1. -
Dr. Ray emailed a couple days ago that I'd been accepted off of the waiting list, which was a really pleasant surprise, but I don't think I'll be accepting it. The official letter of admission is coming in the mail, though.

Two Columbians (if you will) on this board, congratulations guys. Going to try to post the link repeatedly so people can find it themselves, but it's currently updated: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ahfz1Ku8EJp4dExDLWN4Z3N4dUtUWHAxMkh4MldZMEE -

Just dropping in to say that I'm visiting Kentucky on Friday, and as long as I don't come out with a rather negative view of the program, will be turning down Florida's offer shortly thereafter. Hopefully it helps someone here. -

Good thinking; threw things in a spreadsheet really quickly, and gave permission to anyone to edit (hopefully my good faith won't prove to be naive). Link is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ahfz1Ku8EJp4dExDLWN4Z3N4dUtUWHAxMkh4MldZMEE -
Final Decision Thread

Congrats to everyone, glad this thread is getting some use as we're about three weeks from the deadline. I kind of took for granted that you could edit your initial post, but can't seem to find a way to do so? Any ideas? As of now, I'll add the list into this post: University of Arizona (Bandreac, Ph.D) Arizona State University (eriksmegs) University of Edinburgh (antecedant, Linguistics) University of Miami, Ohio (perrykm2) Purdue University (Jbarks) University of West Virginia (jywayne, Ph.D) -
Got this kind of rejection as well--won't be taking them up on it, though. As someone who lives near Rochester, if you don't like freezing winters--don't feel too bad!

Really hoping to get accepted off of the wait list here, but need all the initial acceptances to go out first! -
Perhaps it's a bit premature, but I thought it'd be nice to create a thread to track where members officially decide to go with their graduate decisions, allowing for a quick list of where GCers are headed and maybe helping to put people in contact with each other. Most of all, it's nice to celebrate all the great news people hear back and get a macro look at what directions the community is headed for. Anyway, if you've made a final decision, I think it'd be great to post in here and I could edit together a list in the OP every once in a while. If possible, it'd be helpful to list type of program (MA/PhD), department (English/Rhet/Comp Lit et al.), and even a brief detail of interest area (19th-Century Lit, Victorian, French et al.). If anyone else has suggestions for additional "archival" data, please let me know. Not sure how many people have decided already, but bump this again closer to April if need be.

He didn't say, the closest thing I can quote is that after they hear back from Accepteds, they "dig in to their wait list." It's an absolute hunch but from the sound of it, they might not have an officially notified wait list--and thus if you're applying for the MA you might be unofficially wait listed. But again, he didn't say explicitly. He did not go into the wait list size, unfortunately. It honestly might've been a little strange for me to have asked that. As for your place on the list, I'm not sure, Dr. Dobrin was really kind but that might be confidential info. -
I've compared the schools I'm accepted or wait-listed at by the following metrics: NRC Population Students Time to Degree Completion Rate Pub per Faculty Job/contract Still seeking Teaching Diversity Overall CoL Housing Air, Water Crime Rainfall Snowfall Precip Days Sunny Days Avg. Jul High Avg Jan Low Voting Female students Unemployment Taxes (Income + Sales) Recent job growth Future job growth Stipend Yes, I am an obsessive spreadsheeter-you should see my personal movie and book consumption archive =P But really, these are all things I'm using--obviously the ones pertaining to the actual schools carry more weight but weather and area are also important to me. I've been used phds.org for most of the school research and bestplaces.net for surrounding area research. Ultimately, time to degree, completion rate, stipend, NRC ranking, and cost of living are probably the big 5 when it comes to ranking schools, for me, so far. Still, I'm visiting at least 3 schools over the next 3 weeks and will surely throw all this out the window when I get some a posteriori research

Talked to the DGS, who was ridiculously nice, and obtained some info for those interested: 150 applicants, 7 Masters acceptances 8 or 9 PhD acceptances Acceptances and wait-lists are based on an overall pool, not by area of interest So, if you're on the wait list, probably not worth fretting over your area and just hope you're high in the hierarchy. I'm currently leaning toward a couple other possibilities but am going to explore the option of Florida more and may not know for sure until early April, but will be glad to post whatever decision I make here. Good luck to all those who are in or on the wait list, Florida is easily the friendliest school I've heard back from and they have a really attractive array of classes. -

Got a voice mail from the DGS today about acceptance to the Masters program, really kind and enthusiastic message. Will be calling back to talk to him more in the next couple days. -

I'm on the fence, based on how other wait lists I'm on turn out and visits to different schools. Will post in this thread when I make a decision, though. -

Seems like a pretty high proportion of us here who haven't heard back yet -- haven't seen so many GCers accepted/waitlisted elsewhere, but certainly wouldn't be upset -

Thanks everyone--it was a true shock but it's so unbelievably relieving to be off "the bubble." Not just waiting on my waitlists until April while halfheartedly job-searching in case I don't get in anywhere. -
Named the professors in my previous post, probably just missed it =P Sounds like we're not competing for a spot, though, which is nice.
-
Probably so, at least for the (I imagine) collective meeting with Dr. Ray. Do you know what professors you're requesting to meet with? I'm thinking Richardson, Caramello (if around), maybe Wyatt or Auerbach. No idea what I plan to say, but I'm hoping to make an impression...

Holy shit, I just got accepted. First time I've heard that all season. Excuse me while I celebrate! -
Received email about visiting weekend today, who else, accepted and waitlisted, are attending? I think I'm going to try to drive down for at least the meeting with Dr. Ray and the professors, maybe lunch or dinner.

Congrats! Literally, "just," this late? Fingers crossed that Masters notifications are going out at separate time... -
NOT an acceptance post--just wanted to start a thread to gauge how many other applicants are on the board and if anyone has any info on their MA/PhD admissions. I understand that they're typically late in notifying--but it's getting pretty late. It's my top Masters program, so I'm pretty anxious to find out. Any other applicants, information, etc.?
