  1. UPenn! Good luck to everyone in the decision-making process.
  2. Speaking of mispronouncing words you encounter first when reading, I havr alternate pronunciations in my head for all the theorists. I just started The Marriage Plot (as per the recommendations on this board in an earlier thread, so thank you!), and there's a point where the character is in class and someone is talking about Barthes and she goes, "Bart. So that was how you pronounced it. Madeleine made a note, grateful to be spared of humiliation." Story of my life. But at least I wasn't the student in my methods class who started talking eloquently about Mike Fuckilt...
  3. I told myself if I made it to the other side of this application process that I would get an Eve Sedgwick quote/phrase tattooed on my body...and now I'm like, oh shit, I get to follow through on that promise! Haha. Not in the literary vein as others on this thread, but a favorite quote nonetheless a la Judith Butler at OWS in October: "If hope is an impossible demand, then we demand the impossible."
  4. Haha my only secrets are 1) lurking this board lyke whoa and 2) drinking a lot of low quality booze while lurking (although be careful the time of day you do this because a DGS might call you when chugging said booze alone on a weekday evening. Um, not that this happened to me or anything).
  5. My main interest is queer studies, especially as it intersects with/how it can be applied to other fields. I realize my username is misleading, haha (although Virginia Woolf was totally queer). Thank you! I am in disbelief. I hope that you get more good news soon!
  6. Thanks! It is not by some crazy miracle, though I'm really excited by Rutgers program. This whole experience has been surreal and I recognize I'm in a very lucky position. I am sending good vibes to everyone on these boards!
  7. It was about an hour ago (East Coast). Rooting for you and everyone on these boards!
  8. Hi! I just wanted to start a thread for Johns Hopkins, as there were a few acceptances posted yesterday - congratulations to all! I didn't think I had a shot at getting in so I'm in utter disbelief, but also taking into consideration some things I have heard about the nature of the program. I'm looking forward to getting a sense of things during the visiting days.
  9. I didn't get any details, but the official acceptance is on it's way, so perhaps that will give some more information. According to last year's posts, acceptance calls seem to roll out over the course of a few days, so I'm sure they are still notifying! Good luck
  10. Just got a phone call from my POI, also surprised by the Saturday notification!
  11. Received my acceptance email late this morning and thrilled, excited to see what kind of funding comes through (if it comes through, the email just noted that official information about funding would be sent soon). Congrats to those already accepted, and good luck to all!
  12. Thank you so much! My interests are in queer studies, critical race studies, and contemporary lit. Best of luck, I am pulling for everyone on these boards!
  13. Congrats, OverTheMoon! I also just received an acceptance and am beyond elated. Good luck to everyone!
  14. I've been trying to find captivating distractions -- that is, distractions that literally hold me and/or my attention captive and prevent me from checking (or at least obsessively glancing at the tab for) my email. Some things quasi-working for me are: swimming at the gym, Netflix (in full screen), yoga (not that it's doing anything to loosen me up, but my class has a no phones policy), multiple showers a day, movie theaters, walks in areas with low signal, drunken stupors, and the like. I'll let you know if I ever find anything that *actually* works though.
  15. Aaaaaand I just got a call from a Los Angeles number that was a "political opinions survey," the universe is playing cruel and unusual tricks today!
  16. I woke up this morning to an email in my inbox from a ucla[dot]edu address and freaked out, only to open it and see it was spam/result of a hack job. Googled the name and it's not someone associated with English, so it's not even like I can tell myself that the person had my email address in their contacts because I was on some kind of "WE WANT YOU" list, ha. #heartattacks
  17. The same exact thought went through my head. I'm pretending that it's a very long lunch break. In fact, I may have to pretend that it lasts until tomorrow or next week.
  18. Definitely panicking and obsessing right along with you! I noticed recently that they put information about this year's open house on the prospective students page http://english.fas.nyu.edu/object/english.grad.ProspectiveStudents It looks like the open house is just for admitted students, so hopefully that means a February notification. Can't find any information about whether or not interviews are happening this year...fingers crossed for not, haha.
  19. Yesssss. Freaking out. Even though for all we know, they might not do interviews this year or might notify later, etc etc. Not that that's preventing me from manically refreshing my email. lkdjjsosishshnsjejheksisihsb
  20. Haha, I did the same thing, and it is so unhealthy and unwise. On my phone, I go from loading my email to loading this site to reloading my email... Oh yes, everything about this post. When I'm out, I'm usually at risk of drunk texting, but I came dangerously close to rum-induced posting on here over the weekend...considering I've been more of a lurker than a poster over these last few months, that would have been quite the, er, introduction.
  21. my same exact poison, breadsticks included, but i prefer for the cheap rum to be cheap flavored rum (cherry and coconut are my favorites!)
  22. My most recent grievance: in the last 24 hours, I've received two phone calls, one from a San Francisco number and one from a Texas number...both were telemarketers. I don't even know how I'm on their lists, but whatever. I know it's too early to be hearing, but my body went into full blown panic mode for both nonetheless. It would be awesome if telemarketers could call me from cities where I didn't apply to grad school, kthanxbai
