  1. That's really surprising! Have you tried emailing the admissions folks? They're quite approachable...
  2. Maybe they are going by last names!
  3. Congratulations to both of you!!! Yes, educurious, still hanging onto hope....................
  4. That's actually exactly what I was thinking. I could NOT leave my phone alone all day, I just kept fidgeting with it. I just try to make peace by reminding myself that our "fates" have already been decided, this is beyond control, and that they just need to get the word to us now. Still.........
  5. I believe that is the case! There's a similar type of scholarship I am being considered for for another school that can be added on to the assistantship so that you can technically graduate without loans. I would imagine that Peabody works that way too... unless your assistantship pays full tuition on TOP of the scholarship, in which case I doubt they will let us keep all the extra money! Completing my education debt-free been my goal since high school and I'm hoping that'll be the case for a lot of us!
  6. Guys, it's this week... *flips* *freaks out*
  7. The more important pieces of info were: HDC & Child Studies programs still have not released admissions results Fellowship/scholarship info will go out in March, and financial aid info in late April/Mayish Assistantships come along (at least for my program) largely via emails re:job postings, networks with professors and current cohort, etc. Most everyone gets their assistantship figured out by the start of the school year... and yes, this means some of us won't know whether we will have an assistantship until after we commit. I think that's about it haha. Everyone (both staff and student) was quite friendly.
  8. Wow. I would truly, genuinely appreciate that offer. The HEOC cohort I heard is quite small (~10 in last year's cohort, according to another forum member), research-based, and only a one-year program, so it's difficult to find someone who has much info on it. I mean, I'm FROM Los Angeles and at least a dozen friends plus my own sister have graduated from UCLA, and I still couldn't find anyone... so I would be so grateful if you could ask them whether they know of anyone in HEOC. A huge thank you to you, lainie26
  9. Congratulations, Embarcadero!!!!!!!!!! So happy for you and slightly jealous, but in all the right ways I just attended Vanderbilt's Visit Day and am 99% sure that SUSE is my top choice... really hoping and praying I get a phone call next week from them.
  10. Only about 10 or so more days, then! Ugh, I'm going to be out of the country that entire week, which means I can't "refresh" my gmail obsessively all week and commiserate/celebrate with all of you here at the forum. I'll probably end up "borrowing" wifi from every other cafe on the street to check. here's to hoping it'll make (not break) my vacation... haha.
  11. I'd love to hear from you after you attend Open House for UCLA! I was admitted to UCLA for HEOC, which is a different program but still under the same Higher Ed umbrella. I have zero information from them other than my acceptance letter... really want to attend but I wish we had some information on funding and/or assistantship opportunities. Thanks a bunch.

Yes! Come hang out with us in the Education subforum. From what I gather from the "Applying Fall 2013?" thread, there are quite a few of us attending this week.
  13. I'd love to hear about USC's Preview Day as well, although I'm no longer genuinely interested in their program. After sending my GRE scores three times over a period of four months, they somehow still can't seem to figure out my application. Quite curious as to how their Preview Day will turn out.
  14. Thanks everyone for the helpful replies! I was indeed talking about Peabody's preview day. I received a late admit because of an application oversight and therefore had zero information on the preview day other than what date & time it's at... glad I thought to ask the silly question and didn't show up in jeans
  15. I've got a question for anyone going to these Master's program Preview Day/Visitation Day events... are they expecting attendees to be dressed nicely -- i.e. business professional? Super silly question, I know, and I'm not sure if this question is already addressed elsewhere. But I had to ask since I have one coming up quite soon. I would appreciate any input
  16. I'm applying straight out of undergrad as well! Here's a commiserative high-five... haha. I have been told that my resume looks okay for being a college kid, but I'm positive that my application can't be quite as competitive as a lot of the others that HGSE has received... everyone seems to have so much experience in teaching, research, and so forth! I'm just full of hopes and lots of passion for Harvard, which maybe they will notice!... Ha. Also, I must say I'm privately very glad they are leaving out the "glam & glitter"... they all come from tuition, after all, right?
  17. ASzofer, one of my current professors (who is the head of the MPP program at Peabody) has worked & researched for years in Chicago. She is a super friendly person and refers to her knowledge about the Chicago area all the time in class. I'm really not trying to root for Vanderbilt on this forum... just laying out the facts that it is really an excellent place to be. In fact, the more I try to love the program & school, the more I end up disliking it Great question! I have no idea what I want to do... I think I want to stay open-minded. I want to do more research (maybe abroad), but I don't think I'm quite qualified in that area just yet. I sure wouldn't mind continuing in nonprofit or being plugged into a research institute, although it'd be hilarious to go so much into debt for that.
  18. Shameless plug for Vanderbilt -- Peabody has these really awesome Office of the Dean assistantships. Not sure if they publicize these to entering students prior to committing, but it's a deal where you work on campus and they exempt you from tuition... or exempt you from 2/3 of tuition and then give you a living stipend. Since I'm already on the campus & have a network w/professors, Vanderbilt is financially a lot easier for me to afford than any other schools I applied to... I can potentially graduate loan-free! But just saying that they do offer you some options for financing. I wish I were accepted (they haven't gotten back to me yet).
  19. I was accepted to UCLA, but for a different program.

Vanderbilt undergrad speaking here. I would say snag the rooms you see rather than waiting. The undergrad dorms aren't coming back up until Fall 2014 at earliest... I believe the apartments by the Peabody campus (off Edgehill and 18th, 17th, so on and so forth) are quick, convenient, and have some month by month leases of one-bedrooms if you are moving solo.
  21. I checked my mailbox today morning after having been out of town for a few days -- nothing at all. I won't be able to go over for Preview Day anyway even if I am admitted, unless they offer travel funding.... Oh well. their slow responses to my emails as well as taking four months to find and process my transcripts gave me a bad first impression of them, I think.
  22. Carrying on from the previous discussions about USC, did anyone else get that email about Preview Day they just sent out? Not sure why they'd sent that to me when I have no admissions results yet from them.
  23. Hey! Peabody has some decent assistantship opportunities available, but I believe you have to actively pursue & apply to get them. For example there are assistantships with the Dean of Office for student affairs... not sure of the precise name, but it's something like that. This includes the community service partnership house, career center, admissions, registrar, etc., and pay off either 2/3 tuition + stipend, or all of tuition. I believe that's the best one that is available out there. There's also other stuff available, like teaching assistantships, working as an RA (deadline passed for this), and the likes.
  24. Pepperdine - hands-down best view of the ocean. Vanderbilt - fall foliage on the Peabody lawn is quite amazing. UCLA - South Campus is meh, but the area around Royce Hall is just breathtaking... and Westwood is a nice little addition I'd love to visit Stanford & Harvard, as I've heard only wonderful things about the campus scenery/feel. Also, I feel selfish, but I will come clean and say that the the campus & city "vibe" is a rather significant factor for me
  25. We don't have an Admit Day outlined in our letters! I think it's only for Student Affairs folks. I technically don't have to visit because I'm from the area (although I am currently out of state), but either way I would like to speak with someone from the department/my "advisor", since their website is so lacking of any useful, up-to-date information.
