  1. It does depend on the country. European countries have it very easy but other places not so much. You also have to take into account that if you are in a STEM field then you might be subjected to more screening which can take a very long time (Technology Alert List).
  2. nothing from VT either.
  3. Thank you Tsujiru for the support. You are right, I do have to choose something over the other but I ended up choosing the US program because I felt so miserable and didn't feel at all excited about the Canadian program. I feel much happier now even with all the risks with the visa.
  4. I have to reply to an offer in a few hours if I don't want it to get cancelled. I thought I'd be happy if I got into school A and in many ways it's a good place to be except that I feel that in my field (Computer Science) being in Canada will reduce my chances of having good job opportunities. I can't stop crying and I'm so afraid of choosing this Candian school over the US one but the US visa is not guaranteed for people with my nationality and the research area isn't a great fit but the school is top 20 I'm not sure if this normal. I mean it does feel bad to reject schools but feeling absloutely miserable because you're accepting a good offer is so strange and feels terrible
  5. Me too! I've been stressing out so much about this lately and mind you I'm only commiting to a master's and not a PhD. I'm so scared of making this decision. I keep praying that some sign will manifest itself to me and help me choose what to do. There's just sooo much uncertainty and I don't do well with making decisions that are highly uncertain.
  6. Thanks all. Do you have any thoughts on Waterloo in particular? I heard it's very well connected to industry.
  7. Hello all, I'm very lost trying to make my decision on where to go. I'm fully funded in all of those schools for a thesis- based master's degree. I'm international and ideally I would like to work in industry (preferrably with US corporations) for a couple of years at least after my master's to make sure that I want a PhD. I'd rather do the master's now for various reasons I'm not going to discuss now. I have a few questions: 1. how hard is it to get back into academia after working in industry for several years? and do people get into PhD programs without academic recommendations? 2. generally speaking, which one of these schools has a better reputation in the US in academic insitutions and in industry? 3. Would going to Madison make it harder to find a job after a master's because of its location? 4. Is UW-Madison prestigous in the US? 5. any general advice about the schools is highly welcome. Thanks!
  8. and willing to answer a few questions about the school? Thank you in advance for helping this poor soul decide where to go to school
  9. yahoo messenger pops a little notification everytime a new email is recieved with part of the subject line. so 0 RPM for me
  10. Congratulations!
  11. No not in grad school yet but should be going in the fall if all goes well
  12. No idea if anyone has posted this before but it's hilarious The simpsons on grads
  13. Hey everyone! It seems from the results' survey that a lot of acceptances and rejections have gone out two days ago for uwm, so does anyone know what it means for those of us who haven't heard anything yet? Are they still sending out emails? or does it just mean that we're on the waitlist and won't hear before april? p.s. I've already emailed the program two weeks ago and they seemed sort of annoyed so I'm afraid of emailing again to ask about this
  14. Good luck and congratulations on both acceptances.
  15. omg i'm going insane over here! my program has sent over 10 acceptances and rejections today and I'm pretty sure from last year's trend that I should be hearing something today but that darn email wouldn't come already :'(
  16. no news from Alberta yet and an admit from UBC about a week ago.
  17. Well a small part of the stipend is an award to help offset the difference between international and domestic tuition which isn't taxable, but the rest of it is according to the acceptance letter.
  18. Wow your reply on the other thread was great but I wasn't able to find the $9800 base amount on the CRA website. What is it called officially? and yes, I'm going to UBC and there are residences where you share with other graduates and upper undergraduates. Those have a monthly rent in the range of about 600-650 which I thought was reasonable since that includes furniture and internet access and I hope heating and water . How much would you expect to spend on food and other living expenses a month?
  19. Thank you for your response. I'm already going to be working as a TA and/or RA and that's why I was worried that the school might not be too enthusiastic about me pursuing work in addition to my TA duties and the time I should be spending working on my thesis. How is income tax calculated in Canada? As I found out online in BC it's 5.06% and the fedral is 15% for my income bracket, so does that mean if my stipend is X dollars, I'd pay .0506* X + 0.15*X? and is there any tax refund in Canada for people whose income isn't much? Thanks again!
  20. Hey guys, I've been accepted at a school in Vancouver with a taxable funding of about 21,000 which I have to pay tuition and fees out of. I'm an international student so I'm not familiar with the Candian system and I would like to clarify a few things. After paying tax and other things out of my stipend that leaves me with about $11,000-$12,000. Is that enough to survive in expensive Vancouver? (I'm planning on being very frugal). If not, then realistically how much more would I need? and are schools usually okay with their students picking up some extra work in addition to TA/RA to cover expenses? Also, which one is cheaper renting a place or living on campus? Any additional financial advice would be most welcome. Thanks!
  21. me neither applied to a bunch of schools in the US and in Canada and some of my schools have been notifying people for the past 2-3 weeks and I heard nothing from them I'm hoping that it's not a rejection awaiting me when I finally hear back
  22. j3doucet and nineaxe, can you tell me what your profiles are? and when did you hear from Waterloo?
  23. I know that UBC is a great school, that's why I'm applying there and I know that internationals have to do more work but some applications are more tolerable than others. For instance, Waterloo didn't require anything mailed, others asked for some mailed stuff but UBC's requirements are just too much. I mean they want 4 transcripts and they want them in sealed endorsed envelopes and this is just not how things work on my end of the world. No other university has asked for 4 transcripts. Mind you UBC has so many detailed instructions on mailing transcripts that fill about a page. But most bizarre of all is asking me to mail a photocopy of my TOEFL requirement and this requirement is also unique to UBC and it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Good luck to you to
  24. To those internationals applying to UBC, has anyone found their application requirements ridiculous? As an international I have to mail a total of 4 transcripts and even after this absurd requirement I just read today on their website that in addition to having my TOEFL mailed by ETS, I need to mail a photocopy!!! I don't even have a hard copy of my TOEFL results and this notice was in the bottom of a page! and why on earth would they need me to mail another copy if they have an original one mailed by ETS is beyond me. I'm starting to even consider not submitting my application there.
