  1. I'm going to stick to wearing what I'm comfortable in: T-shirts, jeans, and a nice pair of Nikes or Vans. The tattoo discussion is interesting, because like Strong Flat White stated, some middle-aged to younger English professors do have tattoos and piercings. They kind of fit into the "free-spirit" persona portrayed by many English professionals. My opinion is this: as long as the tattoos aren't offensive, they should be shown.
  2. Hey everyone! I recently received mental assurance that teaching English on the secondary and community college level would be my ticket into the world of education. So, I'm applying to a couple of English and American Studies programs for the fall of 2012. Applying to: Alabama (both English and American Studies), West Georgia (English), and Florida Atlantic (English) Interestingly, I've been accepted into two schools already: Towson University (Professional Writing) and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (Professional and Technical Writing). I applied to both of those schools because I thought that technical writing would be my career of choice, which was a rather idealistic decision. Anyway, I'm hoping I get into one of the schools mentioned above! Hopefully you guys get accepted into your program of choice too.
  3. Wow, I was really about type something very similar. It's so unfortunate how going into the humanities now and expecting a tenure-track position is considered a pipe dream. So yes, I believe that the humanities contain a whole lot of disillusioned individuals, myself included. However: The only reason I'm still applying to schools for an MA in English is because of the amount of backup plans I have. My rationale is this: if I'm committing to getting a tenure-track teaching job, one that's DEFINITELY not promised, then I should have a plethora of backup plans to fall back on.
  4. I'm really considering applying to Alabama's American Studies program. From what I've read about the program, it seems to be a good one, and I like the idea that I could receive funding. Even if I don't receive funding, I would get in-state tuition since I live in Alabama.
  5. In relocating, I would advise you to maintain a support system from back home. By keeping in contact with old friends, the process of acclimating to a new environment won't be nearly as overwhelming. Of course, making new friends at the University of Chicago is a given, but don't be afraid to put yourself out there while making friends. Some of the people you meet would be more than glad to show you around the city, which is good for two reasons: you'll be making friends and learning more about Chicago. I wish you the best with your relocation!
