  1. I received my formal offer of admission to SFU today. I got in touch with the FHS and they noticed that for some reason my file hadn't been forwarded to the DGS. I'd advise those who still haven't heard anything to give them a call.
  2. I already have my housing arranged. If you have any questions about housing or the Vancouver area I'd be happy to answer them. I grew up not too far from SFU.
  3. Hmm, still waiting here. Hoping to hear something soon...
  4. I would expect it's highly unlikely. The DGS approval is usually just a formality. That said, I'm going to call the FHS today and press them on it. I'll let you guys know if they have any useful information.
  5. Still waiting here as well. I spoke with someone who is a professor at SFU (in another department) and they said the DGS has been incredibly slow about getting official acceptances out, so it's not just us.
  6. There is very little university-owned off-campus housing at SFU. (And from what I have heard, it is not in very good shape). There is a relatively recent private development called UniverCity, but you'd have to look elsewhere for information I believe. Another thing to consider is that SFU is quite isolated as it located on top of a hill/mountain; it's very much a commuter campus. I would recommend looking on Cragislist or Padmapper (a website that plots housing ads on a map) for an apartment near Burnaby Mountain or along one of the major transit routes. The commercial drive area has a lot of character and is easily accessible via the Millenium Line. The area around Lougheed is also very accessible (but kind of depressing). New Westminster is also pretty close and accessible via the SkyTrain. If you have any questions about different areas PM me. I grew up not too far away from SFU.
  7. I doubt that a committee would reject someone on that basis alone (esp. for an MPH), but if you're applying to competitive programs then it would probably really help as there will likely be many candidates with work experience and good grades. You still have lots of time, so I would recommend doing some volunteer work if you are able. I have no health-related work experience, but I think the year or so of volunteer work probably helped to get me admitted. Good luck!
  8. To all those waiting for official offers from SFU and those on the waitlist: I called FHS today and they said they would be sending them out after the Easter long weekend. Funding offers will also go out at that time.
  9. Also admitted to sfu population health! Congrats to everybody else who got in and good luck to those still waiting.
  10. Cool! I'm hoping the population health concentration is still to come.
  11. Has anyone who applied to SFU for any of the streams other than Global Health received an email? This is so nerve wracking!
  12. Hey gorillacake, It only took a couple days for the Faculty of Health Sciences to get back to me after I paid. They don't actually give you the form, instead they direct you to a website where you can enter the contact info for your referees (they'll be contacted directly by the FHS) and upload your supporting documents.
  13. Hey everybody, first post here! I'm applying to MPH programs at SFU (population health concentration), McGill, and U of T (health promotion concentration). I graduated from McGill this spring with a BA Honours in Geography (overall GPA 3.7/4, last two years 3.8/4) and a couple summers of research experience. For the past year I've been volunteering with a local organization that seeks to promote well-being among youth, first doing administrative work and then as a sex educator. I also have extensive volunteer experience with other social justice oriented organizations. NMRN: Are you a citizen of any other country (countries)? If you also have Canadian citizenship then U de M would be incredibly cheap (under $1100 per semester!), as you would be able to claim Quebec residency. Certain francophone countries also have agreements with the government of Québec that allow their citizens to pay in-province tuition. If not, international tuition at SFU is refreshingly cheap (relative to other schools). Good luck everybody!
