If you can afford it I would suggest living in the Canyon Crest area. In my opinion it's the nicest place around the campus. The houses on the east side (I believe) are okay too but in terms of wanting to rent an apartment I would definitely look near the canyon crest area. The shopping center is nice, it's close to campus, and it just feels a whole lot safer over there. I've lived here for 3 years so that's my opinion so far on my experience.

1) You're fortunate (in my opinion) that you are on a semester system and you are transitioning into a quarter system. This gives you a very lengthy summer break to not only unwind mentally but also to pick back up towards the end up of summer and redirect your focus. This also gives you plenty of time to adjust to your new city and get comfortable with where you live so when you need necessities you know where things are. 2) I strongly suggest e-mailing some current students (try and find ones that are maybe current 1st or 2nd years so they can relate). When I was on my visit at ND I made sure to ask people when school started and when they moved to the area. Unfortunately for me (and this really sucks), I don't graduate til mid June and then, considering semester programs usually start late august, I would need to move to my new city about a month after my graduation to start getting used to my new town. I was told I should be moved in by the end of July (though whenever I officially decide on a school I'll get some more opinions from students on this). I'm kind of bummed about how small of a gap that is because I would have liked a little bit longer to take some time off but c'est la vie. 3) What to do in the mean time? If you have the money, vacation! Also, read read read read read. This is what I plan to do. A lot of departments have their course listings online (or some kind of form that has to do with what readings they expect). I plan to start reading some of the material ahead of time. I'm a double major in psyc and soc and am finishing up my psyc part of the degree these last two quarters so as soon as I get some down time I'm going to put soc mode back into drive. Right now, it's in 2nd gear with the one theory course I'm taking. You should probably find out where you want to live too. What school are you going to again?

Sick! Congrats. I'm glad to hear you have all your options on the table now. Also, UCR's package actually is a lot better than I thought it was going to be (or what I've been told the offers were for the past few years).

What's your plan until grad school?

Woah, congrats! What are you going to be writing on? You should also post a link once you get some posts up. -
Just saw a UCR acceptance. Anyone want to claim this? What was your package?

Acceptances/Rejections/Decisions

Just got denied at Penn State. That one hurt. I had the most amount of coordination, positive response to my research interests, and overall involvement with faculty and grad students from there. -
It is possible (in that I have heard of it being done) but I'm sure it largely depends on what school it is.

yup. and thank you!!

underoath, haste the day, thursday, emery, august burns red I don't expect anyone on here to have similar tastes in music -
Got back from my visit. I'm so glad they flew us out there. The people in the department are awesome; the faculty and graduate students are great people to be around. Plus, they really take care of their students. I know there isn't anyone else in this cycle on here that applied there but for future generations that search this post - it's an awesome program. It really surprised me.

Flight leaves in 11 hours for the visitation/interview weekend. Pretty excited!

Emotions Regarding Rejection(s)

Am I getting my hopes up too much?

Yours sounds like you're unofficially accepted or in the "probably" type pile and they're trying to get funding in order. Maybe the amount of students they admit this year is dependent upon how much they're going to have to spend for each student. Maybe they can bring in an additional student or two if if they're under in-state tuition. Who knows I'd say it's a positive thing though. You're obviously in the "considering" pile because, well, why would they bother to check your residency and the like if you were a flat rejection. -
University Of Washington acceptance
ThisSlumgullionIsSoVapid replied to Supernovasky's topic in Sociology Forum
I just did that. I also tried putting the number into a tracing website and just from a google search it appears it's some travel agency scam thing that tries to talk you into signing up for some free trip. Those 30 minutes felt so long. My heart was racing towards the end of lecture. I wanted to run out of class to call back so badly. My reaction: -

I've got a few schools to hear back from still but they're mostly my super reach schools that I probably shouldn't have applied to. I think I was a little too ambitious in where i sent my applications and possibly underestimated the field of applicants I would be going up against. I wish I would have sent more applications to the 20-50 range and less top 20. I have to hear back from Chicago, UPENN, NYU, Penn State, Yale, UCR, Purdue, and Washington. Chi, penn, nyu I'm definitely not expecting anything considering how things are going with 30 ranked schools already. The only "higher up" (for me) that I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for is PSU. Other than that, I think Purdue would be crazy to deny me, Boulder is doubtful unless they're wanting to bring in a theorist grad and maybe UCR but we'll see. Anyways, lesson learned I guess. I should have reassessed where I was applying a little better. I have a fall back of a funded masters program that I'm a shoe-in. (albeit horribly horribly funded)

Just got my UCSD rejection e-mail It's not panning out to be too great of an application season for me.

I'm not sure. I thought that one random rejection was a little out of the blue as well. I just logged in and my application is still under review. -
What makes you happy besides sociology?
ThisSlumgullionIsSoVapid replied to water_rabbit's topic in Sociology Forum
haha this would be torture considering I recently turned on the desktop notifications for my gmail. The little icon would pop up saying Accepted and I'm sure my heart would stop for a minute or two.
