  1. E-mails. Particularly ones that have the word 'Accepted' in them. Those would make me pretty happy.
  2. @socialgoovements where was your acceptance from again?
  3. Now this is my kind of thread....
  4. I'll report back as soon as I have some positive emotions to report. In the mean time, my nerves are shot and my back has made more knots than a boy scouts troop. I've also got these twitching nerves in my lip and eye the past two days that I'm assuming came from the stress of mid-terms, not having an acceptance, and preparing (worrying) about my interviews next week. It's not noticeable (thankfully) but it gives me the same sensation of the teeth chattering/shivering even though I'm in 82 degree weather in the middle of February.
  5. Oh okay, cool. That's a lot of people they sent invites to. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for one but am not holding my breath.
  6. Could be any day now. From looking at the last few years results survey I'd say between now and 2 weeks from now.
  7. There's been about 4 or 5 people that have already received acceptances this season. Maybe we're just all in the rejection pile?
  8. Wouldn't hurt to ask. I'm sure they'd let you come if you were funding yourself.
  9. I would suggest staying with a grad student. The information you get from just small talk conversation from them might become paramount in your final decision between programs. Plus, you'll be able to get the real inside scoop of the department in a more personal setting (vs. an open forum).
  10. I've thought about it; I really want to but if I dare dip into what little I have into my savings I fear I'll be wanting to kick my own ass when it comes time to live off of a grad student salary. Maybe I'll get a trip as a graduation gift or something, not counting on it though.
  11. Right now, finishing my degrees. As soon as this grad school debacle is over I intend to spend as much time with my girlfriend as possible and actually go out and do things with her. She's put up with so much of my crap during the past few months going from studying for the gre to grad apps to now my anxiety waiting while working on a paper I'm presenting in March at the PSA. Plus, we might only have a few more months together which is a harsh reality to face. I need to try and "live it up" between making the decision and moving to wherever I go.
  12. I just gave ND's current students a looking over and I think all but 2 or 3 profiles I read came from master's programs. Hmmmm
  13. I'm hoping for SD and R since I looks like a no-go now . SD has had abysmal funding the past few years though.
  14. <--------------------
  15. In terms of prestige those are on par with each other. If I were you I would probably start looking into other dynamics such as recent job placements from the departments, how often the students publish, if they get to publish with the faculty, compare mentors, compare the current grad students there (because you will be working with them and a bad cohort could make for a not so great experience), and other more personalized things like this. Also, consider funding, location, the quality of mentorship (you'll want to e-mail some current students at the department to get the inside scoop). There's a lot that should probably go into choosing between two great programs to find which will be best for you. Either way though, you're in a good position as they are both great programs.
  16. haha thanks, I sure hope so. I find myself waking up earlier and earlier every day to reach for my phone to check my e-mail to see if any East Coast schools might have e-mailed me first thing in the morning. I'm going into hibernation for a few days after this whole decision season is over with.
  17. No I made the shortlist for Notre Dame and am getting flown out there next week but I haven't got any full blown acceptance yet. I want that first unequivocal acceptance so badly just so I can let out the big sigh of relief that I have somewhere to go. And for newsociologist, when comparing Indiana and UCI, no matter how we break down the numbers, it's a tier 1 vs tier 2 type of comparison.
  18. I'm just going off of the imaginary boundaries that lie between rankings. Boundaries that were discussed in my social networking class which spent weeks analyzing the trends in department prestige and hiring between the departments and also how fabio on orgtheory has broken it down before. You can kind of lump tiers together as top 10, top 20, top 50 and then the rest. The boundaries aren't something as rigid as the US news rankings suggest because places can move up and down a few slots every few years. And I'm not starting that thread because I'm not getting into any top 10 haha
  19. Indiana is a top 10 school. UPENN, which is also ranked 11, is referred to as a top 10 by my professors.
  20. Looks like a few uci admits got posted on the results page. Guess I'm not in the first wave
  21. What's the higher ranked program? If its a top 10 then take the top 10 one. Sociology is heavily based off of prestige when it comes to hitting the job market. If its a 20s ranked university then that's not any different than uci Also, congrats! Care to share any stats? There's a few of us here that also applied to uci.
  22. This might depend from department to department. Who knows, maybe a department would like people coming straight from a bachelors because they are more docile and malleable. In all honesty, this is something that's been lingering in my mind a lot in the past few days - being the cohort baby. I'm coming straight from undergrad and, while I know there are a handful of people that do the same as well, what I fear is being placed in a cohort without anyone from the same type of transitional background I am undergoing.
  23. It might be that it's actually just two full days but the first and fourth are traveling days? Fly in on day 1 (late afternoon, evening) Full day 2 Full day 3 Leave on day 4?
  24. One comment on the results survey says Going to be an awesome program. Guaranteed 27k for 5 years + benefits and a computer. Really excited!
