I'm in at Johns Hopkins history program! So, so excited. I hope you guys get news back soon- I was just ready to hear something either way. I feel thankful for the opportunity I've been given, especially because I expected universal rejections this year. I lost my Dad on Thanksgiving day unexpectedly, and have had a really tough year personally and academically. He was the first one I wanted to call when I found out. I think he pulled on some heart strings for me- Thanks Dad!!! -

2 months and 6 days of waiting, for me. Not that I'm counting, or anything. This is the week of judgement! Wishing you all the best of luck -

I wish you were in History! I need more people to decline JHU. You've declined some really great programs, and must be going somewhere totally amazing next year. Congrats! -
Congrats Pugsley! I'm so happy for you!

I love the BSB reference. Here's to the 1990s. I've been continuing to lurk and just wanted to send a post of well-wishes. We are so close to knowing what will come of all this waiting! It's almost over! -

And so, my fellow wait listers- we are within one month of knowing our fate. The plot thickens. -
Wait listing is NOT the end!

Yes! This describes my feelings on the matter perfectly. I've already been wait listed for well over a month now, and I've really got my hopes riding on my wait list program. If it doesn't work out, I don't know what I'll do. If I wait two months and still get a no, I will be completely devastated. Does anyone know when most of the visiting weekends for the major programs are over? I imagine the grad coordinators at our various programs will start receiving some of their answers shortly after students with multiple offers (who don't have any wait lists) have completed all of their visits. I would imagine for most programs that would probably be before the third week in March...any ideas or opinions on this? -

TripWillis- if there's someone being pulled off the wait list at a place like Berkeley this early in March it should give us all hope, right? Right. jywayne- Wow, a 55 person wait list?! Goodness. But at least you're in top 20. How big is the class that they normal take? Must be huge for a wait list that size! Generally speaking, I feel that most programs should know that the deadline is April 15, and they should respect that timeline. I've been "strongly encouraged" to give a decision my acceptance before April 15, but ultimately I will be waiting until I hear back from my wait list program before I respond. I know it sucks to leave a program hanging like that, but it is kind of what we're stuck doing, unfortunately. -
I did use my other acceptance as a bargaining tool. I wanted to show my wait list program that I had another option, but I also emphasized that they were my top choice, and if they offered me admission, I would accept. So I would say- flaunt it- carefully.

I'm waiting on JHU. I'm seeking my degree in History, so my wait list situation may be a little different. I'm glad I found out so early, but making me wait two months for a firm decision while I'm writing my thesis is torture! You English Lit/Comp guys have the best and most supportive wait list thread- thanks for letting me join in -

Yes, a month- and no real contact since. I did have an awkward phone conversation with the grad. coordinator after three weeks of waiting (I called her) just because I couldn't stand the silence. I don't think I'm going to get in touch with them until the end of the month this time, to avoid another awkward encounter. I keep rereading my letter, especially the part that says, "Although we cannot promise you admission, we do want to emphasize that we have drawn from our wait list in recent years." I hope history repeats itself this cycle. Good luck to you both at getting in to UTA!!! -

I've been wait listed for a month today and it feels like two months! Oie! At least another three weeks before I hear anything, I'm sure. I live 20 mins away from my dream wait list program, and I want to go camp outside the department until they take pity on me. But that MIGHT be awkward. -
Geez, that's harsh. I've never seen one worded that way before. I feel like they should assess each candidate on their own merits rather than grouping you together. The oddities of the admissions process....

I think I'll get the chair-lifted feeling when I get that official "Yes! We want you!" Right now I just feel so unsure as to what may or may not happen- I've been sitting with this for about a month now. I felt jubilation at first and now I feel like April won't come quickly enough.
-
I hope so too, monster! Congrats! I feel like this should be a more active thread for those of us still sitting on our heels. I'm not exactly sure how the process works at my top choice school, but hopefully it's pretty similar to the way you describe how it works at Rutgers. It is going to be a looong month.
-
Also- thanks for being so considerate in withdrawing your wait list quickly! Good luck with your remaining choices
-
I guess I reside more in the former group. I have one acceptance and one wait list, so I don't have much wiggle room. I hate to leave my accepted program hanging while I hear back from my wait list program. I guess that sort of thing is common, though. It is stressing me out a little, especially since I thought I wouldn't get in anywhere this cycle. My application wasn't as clean as it should've been, and I had already resigned myself to applying next year before I got any word back. But if I can get in at my top choice program without another application cycle- it would be nothing short of a miracle.
-
Also- is it a common thing for people on wait lists to withdraw their wait list if they've got an offer from another comparable program? I know a lot of people on this forum were wait listed at some programs, but also accepted at others outright. Would you withdraw your wait list in favor of your acceptances, or wait until you see all your options? I'm not sure what I would do if I was in a similar position. I know I'm over analyzing this a bit. But, hey, that's what we do.
-
I found out that I was wait listed almost a month ago. What a long month it has been! And now to wait another month at least?! March is not going to be fun for us wait listers, is it?
-
Sounds like a good year for you so far rockr! Congrats Still waiting to hear back from any other schools? Or are you all done for now?

I'm not even kidding- I got this one today: "So you're getting a PhD in History? Do you want to be a professor or Indiana Jones?" Both.
