  1. It is true that all language classes aren't created equally. But I don't think that necessarily means that taking a community college approach is wrong for everyone. It completely depends on what you need it for. I don't need to use my language conversationally, therefore a community college class would work well enough for my needs. It seems like it wouldn't fit what oswic needs though. But I'm sure there are other options outside of the Middlebury program. There might be some neighbouring 4-year unis that wouldn't mind you auditing a language course, which would still be much cheaper (and much less uprooting!) than going to Middlebury. Apply for it oswic! You're totally right- what could it hurt? And if you get to go I would be completely jealous!
  2. I was thinking about improving my language skills if I didn't get accepted to any programs this year too. I don't think you necessarily have to go to a summer language institute to begin moving towards proficiency. I was thinking I might take a class at the local community college (cost affordable!) if I had to wait a year. While a language institute might look nice on a CV, I don't think you NEED to have it. But don't give up hope until you hear from that last school! With an MA under your belt, I'm sure you have a great application. Best of luck to you.
  3. I too, am on a wait list for one of my top picks. But we have to figure that Safferz, and other people like her who are given multiple offers to top programs, have to reject some of their amazing offers (and you still have more schools to hear from Safferz, so incredible!). So I think there's still some hope for us wait listed folks.
  4. I've been stealing one of my friend's library passwords for awhile. It's probably illegal, but I couldn't get by without it- seriously. I cannot wait to go to a school where I can access any source I desire on a whim. It will be utterly glorious.
  5. I've never heard of that happening before. That's absolutely awful, I'm so sorry. It's not over yet though. Sending you positive vibes.
  6. Hmm. I really don't know why I got a negative vote for something so innocuous. I'm going to quit trying to be nice I guess and return to straight up lurking. I do think this list is a cool idea though- Thanks H-n-P.
  7. Wow! This list is fantastic! Thanks HnP!
  8. I want to go out on a limb and say that most people from Hopkins have been notified if they are either accepted or on the wait list. It seems that the people who are accepted or wait listed have been notified via e-mail, while the rejections are coming via snail mail. I wouldn't count yourself out quite yet, though, especially if you're in the Baltimore area and you haven't received anything in the mail. Good luck!
  9. I too would be interested in hearing more about the Rutgers Interview! That's very exciting!
  10. Kelkel- I agree with everyone here- a funded offer is totally awesome! I also agree with RealNiceGuy, Gene, and Goldie- I too am doing an MA and love it! I feel so much better prepared than I did two years ago, and my app was strengthened for it. You could do your degree at Miami, take advantage of every opportunity your given to do extra work, research, etc., and position yourself well for the next time you apply. And this is all worst case scenario- you could still hear back from another program. You should be very proud
  11. Sorry SapperDaddy- I hope good news comes your way soon from a program that is a better fit for you.
  12. Congrats to all those accepted to programs!
  13. I got a Presidential Fellowship too! History department represent! Congrats Goldie!
  14. Thanks for the words of encouragement/advice, guys! I will be getting in touch with my POI on Monday to discuss matters further and to assure him of my interest in the program. Having another funded offer in the bank is really a relief, so at least I know I'm going somewhere for sure. I PMed you Pugsley
  15. I do want to hear back from every school before I accept/reject, which should be within the next two weeks. I applied to less than 5 programs, so really I'm sure, even if I get accepted to every place I apply (which I highly doubt will happen)- I won't have a lot of people waiting on me. I I just don't want to keep someone hanging for two months if I don't have to. I have friends who applied to over 10 schools (one applied to over 15 schools!), and have acceptances already. If they get into a large number of programs (like I assume they will), it wouldn't be cool of them to sit on offers they know they won't be accepting.
  16. That's my plan too. I have one full-out acceptance right now, but if I get into another program before it's all said and done I will reject or accept that offer as I wait to hear back from my top pick program. I will be waiting until April 15 if I have to, but I don't want to hold up the process for anyone else.
  17. I only applied to a few programs so I don't have much wiggle room to accept/reject offers early. I would hate leaving someone hanging though, especially if they would like to have my spot. I guess that's what being on the wait list is all about- it seems like there's a shakedown from your Harvards, Yales, etc. in late March early April and then more spots open up from there. I know if I got in to my top pick program I would accept/decline early. But as I am on the waiting list, I have to wait to see how things turn out before I make my final decisions. I don't want to reject a funded offer if I'm on the waiting list for another program. I'm guessing that's a situation many wait-listers find themselves in, though.
  18. Hi all, I've just been wait listed at my top pick program. It worries me that several of the people from this board have had to reapply this year. I'm hoping that those fortunate enough to be accepted straightaway will accept/decline quickly, but I know it is far too early for that to begin happening, at least not until all the offers are made. How did you all cope with the waiting/not knowing? I'm completely ready to wait until April 15 for this program if necessary. But still, it will (and must've been) terribly heartbreaking to wait so long and not get a spot. Good luck to you all this year.
  19. I'm going to try wait and obsessively check my mail. I always get nervous about contacting DGS's, so I'm glad someone is brave enough to do so. I'm just relieved we'll know something soon.
  20. Congrats Kelkel! So excited for you!!! Specific Inquiries? I'm with you- what does that even mean?!! It is a tad confusing. So I guess they didn't only e-mail those who got accepted yesterday? That was my foremost concern. Is there still hope for the rest of us nerds who haven't heard yet?!
  21. Congrats on your acceptance Pugsley! Would you mind sharing what your area of research is? Also, did the DGS send out a mass e-mail of acceptance, or was it catered just to you? Thanks!
  22. I'm so excited and frightened at the same time.
  23. Thanks for calling them dukelover! Did they say if they were going to send out e-mails? Or do we have to wait for snail-mail?
  24. Did anybody see the "John Hopkings" acceptance on the result page? I don't know if it is real, (Hopkings?!), but would anyone like to claim it? It seems a little early for them to be making decisions as well.
  25. I've been doing this as well, but to no avail! I'm hoping one day soon I will wake up and there will be good news there to surprise me Until then, I'm looking into some plan B options and trying to finish my capstone paper. Why isn't this paper serving as a better distraction? Sigh....
