Congratulations to everyone who got admitted, and to those still waiting on some good news, I have some for you:
YOU ROCK!
That's why I continue to hang around. Crossing my fingers for something good for you all.
Gotta go with George Washington forever. I have a bust of him that I got at Mount Vernon, and I am not ashamed of its awesomness. All about the setting of non-monarchical precedents and that farewell address.
Also a more recent fan of Silent Cal, who gets very little love. His famous words on persistence should be the mantra for every grad school applicant.
I second the St. Andrews suggestion if you're interested in a Masters. If you're going PhD, though, and the endgame is for a tenure track job, you'd be best served just applying straight to US schools, I think. What you'd gain from taking the year to get an MLitt is really dependent on your undergraduate record, and financial aid is tough to come by.
Man, I feel like all the admissions adrenaline has drained out of me. I'm pretty sure I've already got my choice settled...but there are still apps of mine out there that require a response! Oh how I wish everyone would just hurry up. It's t-shirt time.
Perish the thought!
Similar experience, though at the end of January, right after the 6th had come out. Check out this amazing solidarity! (I realize we're grossly off-topic, though...sorry everybody!)
EXACTLY on all accounts! Best television I've ever seen. Out of control amazing. And I get passionate about my favorite programs, so this is a big deal. Cumberbatch for the win! (Martin Freeman, too!)
Yeah, I won't be back from abroad until June, so I'm really wondering how to make the most of remote contact since I won't be able to attend any visiting weekends. Do people do Skype? Is that weird? Should I send unsolicited emails to POIs and current grad students to ask questions, or go through the DGS/someone else to be put in contact with the right people? Bottom line, how can I get the best feel for departments without making ANY physical visit before decision time?
Noooooo!!! Grantman!!! You're awesome and you're going to do awesome things. I truly believe it; your attitude says everything about you. Plus:
"Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race."
~Calvin Coolidge
That's right. Give Silent Cal some love. He said some smart things for a silent guy. Americanists care to chime in?
So, anyway...godspeed to YOU, grantman, and glad to have been through this with you. All my best.
Gee willikers, you leave this place for like five seconds and things go crazy! TROLLS?! Run, Bilbo, run!
Claiming a Stanford rejection. Yeehaw! My decision becomes more certain as the days tick by! Soon I'll get my precious t-shirt...
There's gotta be a youtube video for that...
...about all the help I can give over the internet. And as a totally unlicensed medical amateur. Even when they call me Dr. I won't be a REAL one.
Man, exactly! At this point I would just like some definite answers from everywhere so that I can just make a decision, be excited about it, and buy a t-shirt.
Yeah, it gets crazy! I imagine that I'm in "refresh" wars with invisible people...trying to hit it faster than they can...
But then the board is still far slower than I imagined it would be.
