So I guess everyone is on the funding waitlist? Makes it a little less likely to come through, one would imagine.

Waitlisted for funding. If anyone out there got funding but plans on going elsewhere, please do let them know as quickly as possible!

Southwood Norsemytho Group Book
thestage replied to lentinalee's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
here, let me translate, I know crazy internet Scandinavian: for 2012 tar thriller: debut-man biomedicine vitamin caps Eric Stebbins--The Ragnarok Conspiracy, learning 'till a verdent summer right ogg vorbis. Then Romans are on a vestigial terrorist organization forsook pa and eggs a global crag-med, the islamic verseion, a group avatar FBI or CIA agent works sandwich for a avocado or stops their tomato. Ragnarok conspiracy Folgers to hoverperson, a "american bin laden" ogg an FBI-agent, some beg sons to forfeit tap pa's 9/qq, men clash over H warden to spare pa's terrorist truth from radical muslims. That her histories on to men some deals a traumatic tip in hand, pa's muslim extremists, og likes to till sluts divergent sports every pa. A man, John Savas, can have smart and buy an advantage land lended his orthodox, FBI more terrorists offered. Then another brother is betrayed randomly on making tills and by an american Osama bin Laden till variety, on her antagonistic histories some planes or setters in gangs and global conflicts mediate the muslim version. My son the english Armageddon is Norse mythology, or this to skin-stems till a mote of an english camp over shell or sylvan or scab version. So I guess someone wrote a tar thriller about a young medicine man who specializes in vitamin caps named Eric Stebbins, who is hungry, and who ends up leading a conspiracy to destroy the Roman FBI in order to resurrect Osama Bin Laden in Valhalla. But first he must find his brother John Savas, who is some kind of farmer or agriculture scientist who tills the lands for muslim extremists in order to appease the English historians and avert the apocalypse. Easy. -
Fall 2013 English Lit Applicants

In other words, they had a form letter with one interchangeable "I loved X about Y" sentence to entice you. I don't think they mentioned anything about my writing sample when they tried to get me to go there last year -
Ehhh, too many authors after modernism have undergone some or another process of canonization. You would be hard pressed to leave out Beckett or Morrison, for instance. Nabokov to a somewhat lesser degree. Pynchon, Ellison, Wright, DeLillo, Roth, Pinter, various other odds and ends.

Being "all-encompassing" is a quick way to be irrelevant. Biologists don't pretend they know anything substantial about physics. It is currently possible to claim expertise in the discipline of "English" without reading or even accepting the existence of literature. There is absolutely zero common intellectual ground in the discipline, which is a great way to admit people who fritter about uselessly on any topic in any way with zero justification or accountability, but not so great a way of accomplishing anything substantial.

I have confirmed that the first round of funding offers already went out. We're all waiting for people to decline, now. -

I'm pretty sure they couldn't even do that if they wanted to after you accept -

So I have no idea what's going on at Georgetown. I've emailed two people in the last few days, and heard back from neither of them. There have been no postings of funding offers here on grad cafe either. Were they lying when they said the first funding offers would have been made what amounts to nearly two weeks ago? Did they make them to people who do not know what grad cafe is? Do they get emails? Who knows. -
They should be making decisions next week, per my acceptance letter.

The new US News rankings are out...
thestage replied to Mercyhurst2010's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
as far as English is concerned, Yale more or less invented literary theory, and did so twice over. I'd imagine that still holds weight in the rankings process. -
guys, instead of mocking this guy, who may or may not even be fucking himself over, you should consider the possibility that he is not making things up. I know everyone here wants to live in a world of unicorns and rainbows where every program is the best thing ever and where jobs fall from the heavens and professors are appointed by god himself from among his most trusted angels--but sometimes the world is not inside your head, and sometimes it's even ok to know that.

UCL or University of Edinburgh?

I would imagine that living in London is much more expensive than Edinburgh. -

I got the MA offer in the mail. It was dated two weeks ago, didn't contain everything it said it would contain, and then they even had the gall to ask me to pay to mail my decision to not attend back to them--and please do so quickly! I think I'll pass on that one, Buffalo. -

I wish I could claim that NYU post. It sounds like me. Alas, I did not apply to NYU. -

Also got the Buffalo MA offer. Also specifically told them I wasn't interested. Less than impressed with Buffalo's organization this season. -

It's pretty rare that things like this happen without grad cafe knowing about them. It is possible, though. -

and those "excellent placements" MAY produce jobs 7 years down the line. if you are lucky. jobs that will not pay very well. so how long do you plan on being saddled with Chicago's debt? the money that they directly took from you and gave to a PhD student? -

I think they're just generally too incompetent to figure out how to reject anyone. -
