  1. Just spoke with my FPA via Skype and she said that by Friday the Full Grant and ETAs should know! Okay back to reading for 3 classes tomorrow, so glad I have grad school to distract me!!!!!
  2. Which national office is Walter located in because when I talked to Jody last week she said in the 'coming week'. The context clues make sense that she meant this week since it was last week. Is Walter specific to your region?
  3. You are under the Canadian Students section and not the American Students section.
  4. She usually sends us an email when she's been contacted by Fulbright, when she sends it I'll post here ASAP!
  5. Last year ETAs received word on January 20th and full research grant applicants received theirs on January 19th. Counter in the fact this is a leap year full grant should receive word January 17th and ETAs January 18th this year or so we all hope so that the waiting game can either end or continue whether we get recommended or not.
  6. This was a fun Magic Ball website I used when awaiting all 15 graduate school decisions last year http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~ssanty/cgi-bin/eightball.cgi Enjoy! I'm panicking and nervous myself since this is round 2 for me in trying to get Fulbright. Last year's decline was a low blow but I was coached to by so many Fulbrighters to not give up so whatever our fate is, if you don't get it, DON'T GIVE UP. Good luck everyone! I'm going to focus on grad school now before Fulbright makes me insane! And go enjoy more of Budapest and snow while I can!
  7. Very true. I know for that as a Fulbright Canada full research applicant that they look for graduate students (pursuing MA, M.Div, JD, etc.) first as a priority. It's described on Fulbright Canada's website. jahanzlik is right! Taking a look on the website of the past candidates they have you can tell what type of projects/disciplines they are looking for and if you project falls in line with that. I know for Canada they listed main subject areas that they are highly encouraging for and my project happened to fall under 3 of the listed categories. Thursday needs to just come. Too much reading and assignments and being sick that is really not helping the waiting game!
  8. Program Applied To (MPA, MPP, IR, etc.): MALD (Law & Diplomacy), MIA, MPP, MPA/MAAAD, MIR, MAGES (German & European Studies), MIA-EPGA, MIPS (Int'l Policy Studies), and MA-INTS (int'l Education Policy), MAGG (Global Governance), MA-IR/MA-IPE Schools Applied To: Monterey Institute for International Studies, Central European University, Georgetown (MAGES), Harvard, Tufts (Fletcher-Map Your Future Candidate), American, Syracuse, Indiana Bloomington, NYU (Steinhardt), Columbia, Florida Int'l University, University of Texas- Austin, Johns Hopkins, Institute of World Politics, Dual Sciences Po & London School of Economics Schools Admitted To: Monterey Institute for International Studies, NYU, Florida int'l University, Tufts, American, Indiana SPEA, Syracuse, Columbia, UT-Austin, IWP, Sciences Po & LSE, Central European University, Georgetown, Harvard Schools Rejected From: SAIS Decision: Central European University ('13); Georgetown University (MAGES '15; accepted/deferred) *(Both fully funded) Undergraduate institution: Elon University (NC) Undergraduate GPA: 3.65 Last 60 hours of Undergraduate GPA (if applicable): 3.87 Undergraduate Major: International Studies, Political Science, and Public Administration (not major but concentration) GRE Quantitative Score: 163 GRE Verbal Score: 168 GRE AW Score: 6.0 Years Out of Undergrad (if applicable): N/a; Graduate May 19, 2012 Years of Work Experience: a few months Describe Relevant Work Experience: Interned with the Office of the Prime Minister of Malta (Human Rights/Migrant Transport Intern); Interned for Jesuit Refugee Services (Refugee Legal Services intern); Volunteered at Marsa Open Centre and taught English and career development to newly arrived migrants into Malta; Selected out of a national pool to be a Charles B. Rangel Scholar in summer 2011 (Foreign Service; Int'l Relations scholars program funded by US Department of State/Howard University); Interned at the Bureau of African Affairs in Nigeria conducting research for Consular Services; currently a Virtual Student Foreign Service intern for the US Department of State (Embassy of Croatia) Languages: French (fluent), Maltese (proficient), and beginning to study Spanish and Italian Int'l Travel Exp: France, London; Ireland; Nigeria; Malta; India; Morocco Quant: Int'l Political Economy, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Quantitative Research, International Relations Quantitative Analysis, Political Science Research Methods, and a plethora of independent research projects in the fields of international relations, political philosophy, political science, and public administration Strength of SOP (be honest, describe the process, etc): Statement of purposes are extremely tough and the most important part of the application. After a excrutiating Fulbright process i was able to master the skill of writing, editing, revising, and finalizing SOPs. That is why I was able to make each of my SOPs for all the schools I applied to unique and personable and different (do not continue to repeat each SOP w/ the same statement because majority of the time you make the frequent mistake of naming the wrong university or program and you automatically get penalized for that with the admissions committee (Be careful!). Lastly, I have submitted all of my applications except for UT-Austin (deadline is March 1st for Rangel Fellow applicants) so if you have any questions and such let me know. I gained the key points and tips from the dean of admissions at schools like Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, American, Johns Hopkins, etc. about how to create a successful application even with coming right out of undergraduate without years of work experience in the field. So, if that's you just contact me and we can chat about this! Strength of LOR (be honest, describe the process, etc): I received academic references from my academic advisor & MUN advisor, then my SGA advisor, and the dean of my university who I have grown closely with and even traveled abroad with him. Other: I attended a very competitive scholars programs that is a target for APSIA schools where they visited us during a VIP meeting to recruit. schools like Harvard, Columbia, American, etc. (basically all the schools I applied to were there). Also, the benefits of being a Rangel Scholar I paid $0 for my application fee waivers and met with many of the Dean of Admissions for schools so I am well knowledgeable about the programs I applied to so if you need help please don't hesitate to ask. If people are interested in the Foreign Service after obtaining their master's definitely talk to me because that is the route i am taking. Research was accepted to top undergraduate research conferences (Presentations made at: Rome, Italy; Gottenheim, Germany; Gozo, Malta; Budapest, Hungary; Las Vegas, NV; NCUR 2012 in Utah; Harvard University and William & Mary) and to present at a conference call with high officials of the Council of Foreign Relations. Those interested in the Foreign Service with the US Department of State should really consider fellowship programs like Thomas R. Pickering and Charles B. Rangel Graduate Fellowships*
  9. Last year we received the email on January 20th, 2012. They put January 31st to give them a longer window in case there is any backlog in getting all of the acceptances and rejections out because not everybody receives them at once and so it could take longer. Trust me though it is mid-January!
  10. I had my institutional interview (with my ugrad board) last Thursday. Worked on edits they provided as a board and my own final edits to the application and statements. Finally, yesterday after a thorough overview to assure all was good I submitted my application! I just pray that mid-January brings good news! Good luck to everyone finalizing everything and to all of us awaiting that dreadful mid-January email. Again, last year I received mine on the 20th (FYI).
  11. Hey, I meant that it was hard to turn down such an amazing opportunity personally but I really searched further within myself and my gut said to go with bettering my academic/professional career by taking on this MA degree. However, if you receive PiA you only get about 4 days to make your yes or no decision so hopefully you would have found out about Fulbright by then. You're making the best choice by applying to both! Good luck!
  12. Good luck to everyone! I'm submitting my full application this Friday with my ugrad institutional deadline. Last year I applied for Malta ETA and we were notified on January 20th, 2012 about if we were recommended by the US IIE committee! That should also adhere this year so mid-January (ish) we should know something. Don't panic, keep calm, and definitely wishing the best to you all!
  13. Hey BlueLightSpecial, I received a Princeton in Asia Teaching Fellowship last year to turn it down for my current MA program in Budapest, Hungary. From my experience, it was quite hard to turn down the PiA fellowship, but they didn't have positions as they advertised in some of my preference locations. So I was left with making a decision with a place that I honestly didn't want and a full-ride fellowship to get an MA in Budapest. Although I don't regret my decision I would highly recommend PiA! Also, I have a friend who is currently completing her fellowship with PiAf and she's loving S. Africa so far! Yes, apply to have options! it's always better to have options!
  14. Same! Mine is Sept 21st and with graduate school starting here in Budapest on Monday I'm up late every night working hard on revisions and edits! :/
  15. I have a week and a day left at work! My last day of work is August 24th and I have 5 days after that until I move to Budapest for a year! Wow the time flew by! I haven't started packing yet either, WTF! I'm so panicking now! Lol
  16. I wish I was done with my essays it's like I can verbally say the entire statement but when I sit to type it up...NOTHING. Lol! I would recommend sending a request for a letter of recommendation to your top three referees now. If you are utilizing your ugrad over at-large that means you are going by your ugrad's deadline system which usually comes pretty fast. Requesting this letter from your professors now will alert them of the urgency and also give them ample time to write a great recommendation. I applied for Malta ETA last year and applying for Canada (Comparative Public Policy) Full-Grant this year and that's why I'm having such difficulty writing my statement of purpose
  17. Man, it's weird my last day isn't until August 24th! So excited for grad school though. We should hang out while we're both in DC before we depart for grad school wonders. I was just chatting with one of the Pickering Undergrad Fellows (Hermes) had dinner with him last night.
  18. Hey folks, I applied in the 2012-13 application cycle for an ETA in Malta. Didn't get finalist and now I'm headed off to Budapest on a full-ride to get a one-year masters. However, I've decided to apply again for the Fulbright. Only this time I am shooting for a full-research grant to Canada. Anyone who is a past Fulbright Canada recipient or applying that has helpful tips or know of people whom are amazing help, please shoot me a message, thanks. Oh and I'm a recent 2012 ugrad so I am going to be affiliated with my ugrad institution. Good luck folks!
  19. Awesome I was just wondering because Georgetown said I'd get all of it! I'm excited! I see you are doing French! Awesome, I'm doing German (scary)!
  20. Is Pickering going to give you money since you already have the FLAS to cover your full tuition? I know how Rangel works and they will still give you your living stipend but if you have a full tuition scholarship you get none of that money if it's covered. I didn't know if you knew but again CONGRATS!
  21. As I stated in a prior post I think if you have an opportunity that can be lined up for you with your current program or networks through that do it for a year and then reapply. You were chosen as a finalist for both and I am telling you friends of mine didn't get it the first try and the second time they were selected! Rangels and Pickerings who are now FSOs have done it and I am planning to do it too! Depending how much you have in loans from undergrad I would be very mindful because your other biggest expenditure is going to be the cost of living in DC! It's so expensive even in Northern VA and nearby cities in MD. So, along with the 20K+ in tuition/fees to come up with you have a steep cost for living expenses (rent, etc.). It's a tough decision but something you have to come up with. Keep in touch and let me know what you decide. I'd love to chat about this further man! Good luck
  22. Congrats jrnels!
  23. Good luck to you all!
  24. PrattIAFF, That's exactly how I felt after the Rangel writing exercise. I had prepared so much for the interview and was confident in my writing skills as well. That's so crazy that we both basically felt the same sentiment after our writing. By the way, American Interest subscription is a charm! Get it people if you don't already have it! The only thing that's going to suck is that next year I'll be studying in Budapest and that means if I get finalist I'll have to travel back (for Rangel at least) which is a total bummer but would be worth it! Hey Jrnels, Georgetown got me man! I'll be at MAGES starting next fall. The Spanish Language Studies department approved my deferral for my FLAS today so I'm too pumped right now man! Plus, they ended up giving me a steep scholarship that was also deferred I couldn't help but to say YES YES YES! Good luck and i'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you all to get the Pickering!
  25. Yeah now the intensity of rigorous coursework begins with just a three month break from undergrad
