  1. I applied. Got word the panel meets Tuesday for Rangel!
  2. IU-Bloomington top in the nation MPA program
  3. Late this month or early March!
  4. I was a Rangel Scholar last summer so I know a lot of current fellows and they told me the notification dates. Good luck to you as well!
  5. Same man. The wait is here. Great thing is that we'll know by the end of February! So not too much longer to wait! Good luck and keep me posted.
  6. Yes, I got a similar email but received one a day after saying that they were reviewing it since they had made a mistake. So weird that it would end up in the wrong department though. Funny!
  7. Got word on (1/26/12) that I was accepted into Tufts University-Fletcher School's Map Your Future program!
  8. I applied early notification but to Steinhardt School not Wagner School! My close friend applied to Wagner and said you will find out late-Feb/early-March! Good luck!
  9. I applied for MEPGA-SIS too! Waiting together impatiently!
  10. Greetings! I just wanted to share some of my advice as I was a 2011 Rangel Scholar (undergraduate program for Rangel) and also applied to both Pickering (undergrad/grad) and Rangel grad fellowships! First, I hope you definitely put that you Syracuse Maxwell School down in your application because that really boosts your chances. The fact that I met all of the 2011 Rangel Fellows (as we stayed together and had site visits together) I would say a lot of them had similar experiences that you are currently pursuing like Boren, Fulbright, Teach for America, etc. I would say that if you have adequately made your Personal Statement and Financial Statement (Rangel) well then you have a great shot. Honestly, do not harp too much on woes of low GPA, GRE scores, etc. Not every person selected for an interview or the fellowship have 99th percentile GRE scores or 4.0 undergrad GPAs and not everyone of them have immaculate professional experience. They have to honestly see you within those statements and that is why they are the most crucial portion of your application. I can tell you the advice given to me by Mrs. Patricia Scroggs (Director of Rangel Int'l Affairs Program) "Students do not take the time, effort and dedication in editing and revising their statements or they simply use anecdotal statements that are generic copies from their graduate school applications. These fellowship programs wants unique and PERSONAL statements! Another key determination of acceptance for Rangel is the most pertinent portion of the application that makes/breaks candidates and that is the Financial Statement. The financial statement is a tricky thing because students think it's their time to gain the committee's emotional side due to the lack of funding for graduate education. However, it's your time to display figures from your undergraduate education debt, scholarships you had received, and figures from graduate programs that you have applied, and you should have your FASFA 2012-13 information within the statement to show that you have proactively handled your business and that you are serious about funding your graduate education. Honestly, applications with great personal statements but 'cry me a river' financial statements get rejected a lot. Best advice I was given is to keep it facts/figures and NOT a sob story! I hope this information was helpful but honestly I think that since you have the graduate school acceptance under your belt and two immaculate experiences that Rangel specifically encourages to Rangel Scholars (Boren/Fulbright) underway then you have a really great shot at hearing good news about a interview. I'm biased a bit because of my Rangel Scholar '11 experience but feel free to let me know if you have further questions at all!
  11. I was accepted into the Map Your Future program on January 26th. It's a program for senior in undergraduate or recent graduate students to apply and get a secure spot with scholarship $$$ into The Fletcher School. I recommend those who are thinking of Fletcher without work experience to apply to this program. Although it's probably not helpful for most in this forum now, but for future reference! Is anybody else applying for Pickering/Rangel Graduate fellowships?
  12. @jmels did you apply Map Your Future or regular track with MALD?
  13. Program Applied To (MPA, MPP, IR, etc.): MALD (Law & Diplomacy), MIA, MPP, MPA, MIR, MAGES (German & European Studies), MIA-EPGA, MIPS (Int'l Policy Studies), and MA-INTS (int'l Education Policy), MAGG (Global Governance) Schools Applied To: Monterey Institute for International Studies, Central European University, Georgetown (MAGES), Harvard, Tufts (Fletcher-Map Your Future Candidate), American, Syracuse, Indiana Bloomington, NYU (Steinhardt), Columbia, Florida Int'l University, University of Texas- Austin, Johns Hopkins, Institute of World Politics Schools Admitted To: Monterey Institute for International Studies, NYU, Florida int'l University Schools Rejected From: 0 Still Waiting: Remaining Undergraduate institution: Elon University (NC) Undergraduate GPA: 3.65 Last 60 hours of Undergraduate GPA (if applicable): 3.87 Undergraduate Major: International Studies, Political Science, and Public Administration GRE Quantitative Score: 163 GRE Verbal Score: 168 GRE AW Score: 6.0 Years Out of Undergrad (if applicable): N/a; Graduate May 19, 2012 Years of Work Experience: 0 Describe Relevant Work Experience: Interned with the Office of the Prime Minister of Malta (Human Rights/Migrant Transport Intern); Interned for Jesuit Refugee Services (Refugee Legal Services intern); Volunteered at Marsa Open Centre and taught English and career development to newly arrived migrants into Malta; Selected out of a national pool to be a Charles B. Rangel Scholar in summer 2011 (Foreign Service; Int'l Relations scholars program funded by US Department of State/Howard University); Interned at the Bureau of African Affairs in Algeria conducting research for Consular Services; currently a Virtual Student Foreign Service intern for the US Department of State (Embassy of Croatia) Languages: French (fluent), Maltese (proficient), and beginning to study Spanish and Italian Int'l Travel Exp: London (Summer-4 month); European Union WT Trip (1 month); Ireland WT Trip (1 month); Algeria (4 months); Malta (semester- 6 months); India: Issues of Rural India (1 month); Morocco (1 month) Quant: Int'l Political Economy, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Quantitative Research, International Relations Quantitative Analysis, Political Science Research Methods, and a plethora of independent research projects in the fields of international relations, political philosophy, political science, and public administration Strength of SOP (be honest, describe the process, etc): Statement of purposes are extremely tough and the most important part of the application. After a excrutiating Fulbright process i was able to master the skill of writing, editing, revising, and finalizing SOPs. That is why I was able to make each of my SOPs for all the schools I applied to unique and personable and different (do not continue to repeat each SOP w/ the same statement because majority of the time you make the frequent mistake of naming the wrong university or program and you automatically get penalized for that with the admissions committee (Be careful!). Lastly, I have submitted all of my applications except for UT-Austin (deadline is March 1st for Rangel Fellow applicants) so if you have any questions and such let me know. I gained the key points and tips from the dean of admissions at schools like Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, American, Johns Hopkins, etc. about how to create a successful application even with coming right out of undergraduate without years of work experience in the field. So, if that's you just contact me and we can chat about this! Strength of LOR (be honest, describe the process, etc): I received academic references from my academic advisor & MUN advisor, then my SGA advisor, and the dean of my university who I have grown closely with and even traveled abroad with him. Other: I attended a very competitive scholars programs that is a target for APSIA schools where they visited us during a VIP meeting to recruit. schools like Harvard, Columbia, American, etc. (basically all the schools I applied to were there). Also, the benefits of being a Rangel Scholar I paid $0 for my application fee waivers and met with many of the Dean of Admissions for schools so I am well knowledgeable about the programs I applied to so if you need help please don't hesitate to ask. If people are interested in the Foreign Service after obtaining their master's definitely talk to me because that is the route i am taking. Research was accepted to top undergraduate research conferences (Presentations made at: Rome, Italy; Gottenheim, Germany; Gozo, Malta; Budapest, Hungary; Las Vegas, NV; NCUR 2012 in Utah; Harvard University and William & Mary) and to present at a conference call with high official of the Council of Foreign Relations. Those interested in the Foreign Service with the US Department of State should really consider fellowship programs like Thomas R. Pickering and Charles B. Rangel Graduate Fellowships*

  20. Just got this email from my FPA from my university everyone! Dear students, I received word from Fulbright that you should all receive email notifications on January 19th about the outcome of the first round of reviews. "Recommended" will mean your application has been forwarded for review by the host country, and "Non Recommended" will mean your application is no longer under consideration. Fulbright recommends approximately 2 times the number of grants on offer. Please get in touch with your FPA because they are the best source not a lot of heresay from others. Stage 1 Decision Notification is going to be January 19, 2012!
  21. Can anybody provide proof in an email or some form of correspondence that Fulbright has stated the date is January 31st? It's very important that I know contingent on another post-undergrad opportunity decision deadline. Thanks!
