I didn't get this advice, but I made a personal website and pretty much just put everything that I thought was relevant on it. It was neat to see where people were looking at it from. Google Sites is a pretty easy format to use (and free), Wordpress, Weebly... etc. You could even just use something like Academia.edu.

Interesting - you think you'll turn down Rochester/Iowa for an MLitt at St. Andrews? I would be very curious about deferring without absolutely accepting an offer. It doesn't seem like it would be very advantageous for universities to offer this (especially given how contingent funding usually is), but who knows! Ninja edit: I forgot the most important part - congratulations!

To your last point, I think it's probably a decent sign. As someone interested in mind, these are good places to do a research post-doc. I also think Jesse Prinz would make an exceptional dissertation advisor. He spoke at our graduate conference last year and he's - to quote Ben Affleck - wicked smaht.

My cum undergrad GPA was 3.1 or something similar - from a really small state school. I had to get an MA first, but you can see my results in my signature. It's possible!

I don't like to drag things out, but you didn't say that you felt he was pugnacious or self-important because of his blog, you said "The faculty at my uni who have met the man have all pretty much said he's a rather pugnacious self-important dick." I'm not offended (why would I be offended?), but having met Leiter and found him to be a nice guy, I just think it's unreasonable to form opinions on whether or not you would like to work with someone based on rumors you've heard about him (or from posts on his blog).

I'm not a fan of personal smearing on the basis of hearsay and rumor, even if it is done under the guise of "agreeing" with someone else.

So, is this a thread about the PGR rankings or a thread where we personally insult Brian Leiter?

The placement record that they have online is really, really limited. Even in that small sample size, it's not very good as far as I can tell. So, despite the people in the department saying it's good... I don't know how much confidence I have in that sort of assessment.

Assuming you mean that there are a lot of great *graduate* programs that aren't on the PGR - I'm curious, what departments do you have in mind? What are their* placement records like?
