I've never heard someone refer to Arizonans as "Southerners", although Tucson is only 60 miles away from the Mexican border.

Perhaps they feel like UNC and/or Virginia are better fits for them?

There goes another NYU acceptance, and an Arizona waitlist. At least something happened, even though it seems to be at the end of the day.

A friend of mine received an offer from UCI's LPS program, and has scheduled a visit. I do not know if they were the same ones that reported the result here, but I don't think so. So it's at least possible that more offers have just not been reported on here yet.

I think my formatting definitely overplays the severity that I meant to say it with. I don't think it would have any impact on your admissions whatsoever - unless you were e-mailing people incessantly enough that they got fed up. I've just been told by my advisors that it's not worth doing unless it's really close to the deadline, or you have information that other applicants have gotten news about a/w/r.

If you want to know your status, I think it's protocol to either ask the department staff or the DGS. I know you qualified your post with "it's still early in the game", but I would stress to others who might be reading: do not do this. Unless it seems that all other acceptances/waitlists/rejections have been handed out and you haven't heard anything, just wait until the decisions are made.

It's pretty quiet, but it's also still quite early.

Perpetual's advice is stellar! It's understandable that a lot of applicants are leery of MAs becoming necessities, but if you do get shut out and want to improve your chances of getting into a quality PhD program (not to mention developing a lot as a philosopher), an MA program is ideal. One of the more under-rated aspects of an MA, in my opinion, is that you have an entirely new set of faculty to learn from and work with. The make-up of my undergrad and MA departments was quite different, and I think I benefitted a lot from this diversity.

Humility? One of the professors at my university told me that Avicenna (at least I think it was Avicenna) said that the existence of Aristotle - a perfect philosopher - was proof enough that there was God.

FWIW, I got a call yesterday but the results page shows it as the 9th (I wasn't the other poster with 3a/23 though).
