  1. Would you like to share where this is at? And how did they notify you? Did you call them? Did they e-mail you?
  2. Last year, l was rejected by all the schools I applied to. I was crushed. However, I spent the summer looking for a job and studying in order to retake the GRE (my last results were over five years old and so I had to retake them). I found an amazingly cushy job which at the same university where I just finished my MA where I have a lot of downtime. This allowed me to be much more effective this time around when applying. It also allowed me to study and save money. During this time I also got an adjunct position at a community college which helped expand my CV. Thinking back on it, I don't know if I would have been prepared last year, even if I had been accepted. So it turns out that, even though the sting of rejection is painful indeed, it was better this way. In fact, I drastically improved my GRE scores thanks to that extra time. Not to mention, it's been nice having time off from taking classes. I hate to repeat worn-out clichés, but sometimes you just have to turn a negative into a positive.
  3. Well I was right about myself at least. I was informed via e-mail that I've been granted an "informal" telephone interview and that, pending positive results, I will be accepted at UW-Madison! Hopefully the rest of you will hear from your prospective departments this week as well.
  4. I got an e-mail from Hualde (DGS and renowned linguist, you're no doubt familiar with his work) with an acceptance letter from the department. It was before Christmas even when I received the e-mail! The website doesn't say anything other than "application submitted." If you haven't heard back yet, it probably is a bad sign. I think UIUC usually notifies pretty from what I can see in the results survey. But you applied to quite a few excellent schools and programs, so I wouldn't panic just yet. I was going to apply to even more than the 7 to which I had applied, but then I heard from UIUC and sort of lost my sense of urgency. By the way, I also applied to UIUC last year and got rejected. So this is my second round. Hang in there!
  5. The e-mail didn't really specify. It said a faculty-member would contact me within a couple weeks. @maquinadoser: gracias!
  6. I was accepted into SIP at UIUC. It looks like you also applied there. You haven't heard anything back?
  7. Interview notification from UW-Madison! Did anyone else apply there?
  8. I just go an e-mail from UW-Madison for an interview! Yay!
  9. Nattanun, I understand what you're dealing with. Last year, while waiting for notification from programs (this is my second time applying), I was taking my M.A. comprehensive exams, writing final papers, not to mention teaching Spanish 102. Just think, it will all be over with in a couple months! wlkwih2, Trees...very clever! Lol.
  10. I've been reading up on syntax, one of the areas in which I'm least prepared and least interested in; no offense to you syntacticians out there! I think I need to find a better way of coping. At least we're almost done with January!
  11. I see someone just got accepted to the Masters program in Spanish and Portuguese at UW-Madison. I have a feeling the rest of us, including sociology applicants, will be getting a notification soon, probably this week.
  12. Those are great schools! Best of luck!
  13. wlkwih2, Thanks for the sentiments. Perhaps we'll meet as colleagues at a conference someday? Can I ask where you've applied? Also, are you familiar with Brian Joseph at Ohio State? I think he has done some work in Balto-Slavic languages, though his expertise is Greek historical linguistics.
  14. I applied to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese (Hispanic Linguistics). No word yet, but all this talk of notifications is getting me excited!
  15. Actually, I didn't list it as my program, but the area I plan to specialize in is really historical romance linguistics. I think you and I are the only historical linguists on this forum. I'm sure it has to do with academic trends. Historical linguistics just isn't in vogue at the moment. That means more room in the field for us!
  16. Hi everyone! How nice to have a place for fellow prospective linguists going through the same thing. I'm wondering if anyone else out there took the backdoor approach into linguistics and applied to a language specific linguistics program such as Germanic or Romance linguistics. Given that my MA was not in linguistics, I took this approach and have so far been accepted at 1 out of the 7 institutions to which I applied (UIUC in Romance Linguistics). Also, any word on the average funding packages for linguist Ph.D.s? I'm being offered approximately $15K. I think it's the full amount, but is it decent?
