  1. Congrats to all of you who got accepted!! I'm still waiting...
  2. At least in Chile, Geotechincal Engineers are very scarce and most of them get a job right after (or even before) graduation. However, the Chilean education system requires 6 years of study in order to get the civil engineering degree + a 2 year master in geotechnical engineering in order to be certified as a geotech.
  3. Hi to all! I'm applying to CEE PhD programs at MIT, UCB, CMU, Stanford, UCSD, Texas Austin and Caltech. I've only heard back from CMU (accepted!). I'm applying to a scholarship from the Chilean Government that has April 17th as its deadline, so I need answers ASAP!! My background: - Civil Engineer (graduate with highest honors) - MSc. Seismic Engineering (graduate with highest honors) - GPA: 3.14 (top 30% of class of 700 people - best and most competitive Chilean school, ranked first was 3.4) - GRE: Q:164 (91%), V: 156 (72%), AW: 3.5 (29%) - TOEFL: 106 - 2 Conference publications - 1 Journal publication (ISI) - 2 years of work experience designing industrial steel buildings (HATCH) - 1 internship in designing concrete builidings (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill)
  4. I had the same problem. I have a converted GPA of 3.14, even when I was at the best 15% of my class. At least in my school, I don't know anybody having a converted GPA greater than 3.4. What I did is to ask my school a transcript that included my relative position for each course.
  5. I'm worried about my GPA. I'm an international student, and converting my grades to the american system resulted in a frustrating 3.14, even when I was in the top 10 of my class. I don't know how american students are graded, but at least in my university the best GPA in the class would be about 3.4. The engineering coursework is so damn hard that everything over 3.0 is considered an outstanding academic performance.
