  1. Thanks a lot. I'm just looking to room with another grad student, so that really puts my mind at ease.
  2. That's good to know. I was thinking about driving to LA sometime between August 10-15 and staying in an extended stay motel. In your experience, is 2-3 weeks long enough to find a place? In my current city, you usually have to be on a waiting list for a couple months. Thanks a bunch!
  3. What school? I'm in a similar situation. I'm going to UCLA.
  4. Sorry, I think I see how I confused you. I sent two emails last night, not just one. One to the cs grad office and another directly to the mentor coordinator (there is a cs grad student mentoring program: http://csgsc.cs.ucla.edu/mentoring.html). The mentor coordinator got back to me. I guess I need to start working on getting an adviser then...
  5. I'm not sure, but when I go to "View Enrollment Appointment Times" on URSA and select Fall 2009, I only see one date in the "Appointment Start" column. It's in the "Graduate" row. I'm assuming that's my time (June 28th). I actually just emailed last night asking about the adviser situation. No word back, yet. I've been thinking that they would email us the name of our adviser or something. Were you told that we are supposed to pick our own adviser? I have no idea. But, I emailed the coordinator of the mentoring program last night to see if I should have a mentor already, and he said that they are working on setting it up and should have it up soon. He seemed to indicate that they were on schedule. So, this makes me think that we are okay on time because we are supposed to be able to ask our mentors about what classes to take and how many. I'm assuming we will be assigned a mentor before we have to enroll.
  6. Anyone hear anything, yet? I haven't. Enrollment starts tomorrow... EDIT: Been doing some research. I don't think enrollment starts for us tomorrow, necessarily. From what I understand, they randomly assign us enrollment times, that is, when we are allowed to start registering. I think you can see your time by going to "View Enrollment Appointment Times" on URSA.
  7. I'm glad to hear from some others in my situation. Graduate orientation is on September 18th. <http://gsa.asucla.ucla.edu/orientation/index.htm> There are some helpful links on that page, as well. Things do seem to be running a little slow. I think the main reason for that is because the Spring 2009 Quarter at UCLA doesn't end until June 12th. I've been done and graduated from my undergraduate university for a couple weeks already, so I've been sitting around going, "Now what?!" <http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/calendar/acadcal08.htm> My guess is that when the Spring Quarter ends, we'll start getting more info. Also, Fall '09 enrollment begins on June 22nd. <http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/>
  8. I have a 3.76 GPA, and I got into the PhD program at UCLA with a 680 quant. I'm a math major, but I never do that well on standardized tests. Depending on the school, I don't think it's that important as long as you have enough to make up for it. I don't even think MIT asks for your GRE scores.
  9. Hey! I'll be starting the PhD program there in Fall 09. Have you guys been contacted by an adviser or anyone? I think we can start registering for classes on June 15th, but I don't really have an idea of what I need to take. I got my BS in math and even though I have a strong foundation in CS, I imagine I'll need to take some leveling courses.
