phdwannab, it depends on the program and the POI. If I'm not mistaken, it is usually up to professors whether they want to do interviews or not.

Can anybody claim the UC- Santa Barbara acceptance? It seems rather odd for that to come this early. I posted this same question on the Results thread but that doesn't seem to have taken off.
-
Anybody want to claim the UC- Santa Barbara admit? It was posted today(Sunday) so I thought that was a little strange. I also spot a UC-Berkeley rejection.
-
Of course, there are many more schools who have not revealed results yet. I was specifically talking about Duke applicants.
-
To be blunt, if you haven't heard from Duke yet that's probably not a good sign. Lots of acceptances going up today.
-
Thanks for that insider information, jamc8383! But are we sure that they do acceptances in 2 waves or is this just speculation? I was on a wait list last year and it was hard to deal with.
-
.... doesn't help that Gmail is down now.

This morning, I checked the Grad Cafe results page on my iPhone. I saw that some people were notified of their acceptances to the Ohio State. I rushed to my laptop, opened up the relevant application page, and it still says "pending." .... Bummer. But at least, they send out acceptances in two waves.

thedig13, I think you're fine. But more importantly, who gets T-Mobile? Their coverage is awful.
-
I understand but setting up separate threads like "UT-Austin results" are more appropriate and will most likely yield better conversations than hunting people down here. This isn't a big deal; just an observation of mine.
-
Maybe this is just me but I'd prefer if this thread didn't turn into a hunt for people who posted results.

Yeah, I'm really hoping to get into THE Ohio State University but I know it's crazy competitive. Probably about 300 applications for 15-20 spots. But that's how it is at all top 25 schools. Last year, I heard Columbia received over 400 applications!

Starting next week, I think the results page will have more History PhD waitlists/rejections/acceptances. Ohio State and Michigan State typically report acceptances at the end of January. I think UNC is early too.

It's too late to email potential advisors, anoraklibrarian. It would only hurt you now. I also don't think you missed TOO much by not emailing professors. However, I say that hesitantly because I've had great conversations with several professors as a result of my inquiry emails. It also saved me a few bucks because they would let me know if they were taking graduate students or if they were retiring. I wouldn't worry about it now.

Once you are accepted into a program, what are the steps that one usually takes? Do most PhD program/advisors help guide their "younglings" at first? I just hope it's nowhere near the levels of stress I had while working on and submitting PhD applications.
-
Looks like we got our first official acceptances in. The winner is the University of South Carolina.
-
That's ballsy to push a Skype talk, kdavid. It's not surprising that a majority backed away from it. What made you think that it would help you? After an acceptance, I think a video chat would be appropriate but during the application process, I don't think it is a good move.

Ok, thanks everyone! It looks like I have nothing to worry about then.

I will be studying abroad this semester and one of my concerns is that I will be missing the gatherings, where newly admitted students can meet professors and other graduate students, that many departments hold. I'm wondering if most programs hold these prospective student weekends. Should I be concerned that I will be missing these opportunities?
-
Hi all, Quick question: does it negatively impact your chances if you submit an application first despite not having all your letters of recommendations from your professors? Does it matter? I have some applications right now that are completed but I'm waiting on one professor to submit her letter (probably a day or two before the due date) before I officially submit them. I just want to get these things out of my sight!

Short story: I suck at standardized tests. I did poorly on the SAT, ACT, and now the GRE (v: 157, q:143, w:4.0). Should I address this issue in my SOP or just ignore it? I have a high GPA at both the master's degree level (3.94/4.0) and at the undergraduate level (3.88/4.0) which will help my case. Just looking for some advice.

Anyone know when George Washington's accepted student visiting weekend was?

In a matter of a half hour today, I was rejected from Illinois's History PhD program and Brown's American Studies PhD program. It's been a tough Friday

Ithaca is not "deep into the country." It's a college town and has all the amenities of being such. I think you will come to enjoy it. Plus as all upstate NYers know, Ithaca is Gorges.
