HM "Dear Ford Foundation Fellowship Predoctoral Applicant: Your application in the 2011 predoctoral competition of the Ford Foundation Fellowships Program has been carefully evaluated. We regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you a fellowship. However, it is a pleasure to inform you that your application was sufficiently meritorious to receive special recognition. Unless you requested otherwise, your name will appear on the Honorable Mention List, which will be posted on the Fellowships Office Web Page."

yes, i would totally love it if someone called! (out of the US here, otherwise i would do it)

ugh, yeah, fellowship apps are entirely draining... it's a lot of work, and essentially a gamble for a real source of income. i'm lucky that my department provides steady funding, but with huge undergrad debts, in an expensive city where housing eats up most of my $ and with an unemployed spouse, it's still pretty tough to manage - and demoralizing at times. i'm really exhausted by all of it - especially when april rolls around, because it's always an emotional rollercoaster. this week, everytime i check my email i feel slightly ill. but hang in there!!! it's tough for most if not all of us - but it's also a source of support to have a place like this where we can vent and get support from fellow-grads. good luck and good vibes to everyone.

thanks for responding. yeah, that's what mine reads as well. good luck all of you!

according to the website, all my app materials were received, but i never actually got a confirmation of any sort that my app was complete. (though i've been away from my mailing address so i wouldn't know if i got one via post.) did everyone else get this? it's probably just last minute jitters but i'm hoping that my app wasn't excluded from review for some silly technical reason.

i am FREAKING OUT. i just got into a phd program at columbia - which i am super excited about, but also waiting to hear from UK programs (but won't hear about funding till may and have to make a decision now!) im american but my husband is european and we live in europe. the problem is it may take a really long time for him to get a visa - maybe even 2 years. i don't know if he (or i)will be happy in new york --- he's never been so he has no way to make an informed decision! i don't really know what to do. he said that maybe we could make it work, but i feel like it's so unfair since he has never been to the states, doesn't know what it's like, and may love it or hate it -- and it would uproot him and all of his hard work establishing himself in the UK, learning to speak english, etc for 5 years. i don't even knw if they will let me start in the spring, so maybe i have a chance to get him a visa faster. spousal visas take so long. damn. -
i just met a few profs in the department where I've been waitlisted for a phd. the cohort is small (6-8) and it's an ivy. i met with the dept. chair and the DGS, who told me that this is the first year they've used a waitlist, due to lack of funding. my spot doesn't depend on one of the accepted students in the dept declining -- the dean of the graduate school will notify each department how many students they can take from the waitlist after april 15 when other students have responded to their offers. it may be the same in your case, i.e. your chance of getting off hte waitlist does not depend on one of those 2-3 students declining their offer.
-
i just received an email from the dept administrator stating that the acceptance rate was cut due to the financial crisis and that they are using a waitlist for the first time. I should expect to hear back after April 15 when the committee convenes to consider responses to offers.

Answering questions about Harris
iwantgradz replied to xnormajeanx's topic in Government Affairs Forum
does anyone know anything about the harris waitlist? i was waitlisted and i emailed for more details, but i'm wondering whether the waitlist is ranked, what my chances are, etc. -
I was so shocked to hear I'd been waitlisted for a Phd at my top choice school - that normally admits about 6-8 students each year. I never received a letter or email so I called to find out about my status, and was told I'd been waitlisted. The person who answered the phone also expressed surprise that I hadn't received a letter... I'm guessing it got lost in international mail. Either way, I would loooooove to attend as it is an amazing program and fully funded. It sucks to have to wait... I'm drafting an email right now to find out about the waitlist procedures. Any advice?

I was told by the gsas admissions secretary that decisions would be made by the final week of march...... has anyone been accepted to the MEALAC PHD program?

public policy or public admin without experience
iwantgradz replied to bbq555's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I'd suggest waiting just a year, unless you are absolutely sure this is your chosen path and have stellar credentials and internship experience and are unwilling to wait under any circumstances. I applied without WE because I knew I definitely wanted to do an MPP but also because I felt I would never get a job in this market. I was rejected from 3 schools and waitlisted at 1. Had great letters of recommendation, graduated with a distinction and a 1300gre. Have lived abroad, speak 8 foreign languages, and have significant intern/volunteer exp in developing countries. SIPA rejected me but encouraged me to reapply after WE, and I'm kind of glad. I've been speaking to a friend who is in the LSE MPP program (got in without WE) who told me that she is lost in many of her classes simply because she has no context to understand things that seasoned professionals are talking about. She said I would definitely learn and benefit more from having prior work experience. Just relating my experience - hope it helps! -
I'm not totally gutted - everything happens for a reason and I'm sure something else on the work front will work out. I just wish I wasn't so invested in a career in development/non-profit, because the type of work I want to do is severely low-paid. And apparently I'm only qualified to work for free... haha Also rejected at GPPI, but at least I was waitlisted at UChicago...
-
rejected but among less than 5% encouraged to reapply after gaining work experience :\
-
i'm extremely interested in attending sipa mostly because of their human rights concentration and am definitely going into public service. speak 7 langs, got great LOR's from my masters profs (in middle east politics, with high honors) and international ngo experience in developing countries and loads of time spent living abroad/traveling (india, egypt, uk, etc). however am only 23 and feel like the lack of full-time work experience srsly kills my app i haven't heard back from a single mpp/mpa program that I applied to, and i'm feeling super disheartened, especially as this is coupled with over 300 job rejections + the need to pay off undergrad debt! i'm so over this recession!!!!
-
wow, i feel like i am the only person who hasn't received a decision yet! Congrats to all of you who have gotten acceptances!
-
feel the same way, but also have a sinking sensation that that would be too good to be true.
-
the waiting is killing me! i haven't heard from any of the other 3 MPP programs I applied to (dual degrees - MPP/JD or MPP/Phd) and I'd really like to know now. SIPA is my top choice. I am bracing myself for rejections from all (quite likely, considering the rise in applications and other factors), but I'm secretly hoping I'll get in with funding so that I can get out of this crappy job market and stop interning for free everywhere Either way, I just kinda wanna know so I can move on.

applied to 4 mpp progs, have yet to hear (while tons of others have!) eeeeeee!!! freaking out. us undergrad, international grad, international address.
