After 4 rejections and a countless number of sleepless nights with my name on a waitlist, now at the dawn of the week of April 15th, I must have been on the edge because I was still accessible to admissions operations – and I'm accepted to and will be attending UCLA.

I'm in a similar situation with UBC and UCLA. I was in communication with professors from both places, including having been waitlisted. But neither of them replied back to the latest emails I sent (about a week ago). I guess we're really just about a week shy of April 15, so the tacit message is that we ought to man up and wait a little longer – at least, ruling out the possibility in which a snail mail has been creeping up on us, neither of us have been given a rejection yet. *sigh*

Unless you're really interested in variationist (socio)linguistics, which seems to be what NCSU could teach you well, I would say that choosing Syracuse appears to be a no-brainer if you want to get a balanced introduction to mainstream theoretical linguistics – perhaps with a little emphasis on acquisition. After all, it's a MA degree. Go to a place that will help you lay the groundwork for something that you'd like to pursue further.

How optimistic should I be for being waitlisted at UCLA? Could some of you guys who have been through the same process share your experience with them? Have you seen applicants–or are you one of those applicants–that were admitted really late in the process, e.g. dangerously closer to April 15, or on April 15? The waitlisting message was that if they somehow get more funding, I would be admitted. This seems to be something equivalent to an admission without funding. I think this could mean various things, including that I would be given an admission when an admittee with the same interest as mine declines an offer. On another note, is there anyone here who has decided to go to UBC? Or someone who is on their waitlist besides me? As a semanticist with a few particular topics in mind, my top choice is UBC, and I was told that I would hear back from them by the end of this month. I would be curious to hear about your stories. Thanks guys!

As for Canadian PhD programs, neither McGill nor UBC requires you to submit the GRE score.

If you're looking at PhD programs in theoretical linguistics, I think you're probably out of luck without much margin of error, as far as US programs are concerned. Looking at the level of programs that you have applied for admissions, I doubt you would be interested in earning a degree at unknown places which *might* still be accepting applications. I don't know much about Canadian programs. However, I have always thought that Leiden has a great program. Well, it depends on your interest, of course, but I don't think I would be worried if I were in your position.

That is precisely what I was thinking/guessing. But you can certainly hope for it! Right? It is still early for many programs to send out ``official'' admissions notifications, and therefore we could well be waitlisted at places from which we did not hear back yet! Being waitlisted is less painful than being rejected, it's like a pat on the back... just without any substance.

To the poster who submitted the MIT rejection news on the admissions result board, I'm curious if you had any missing parts in your application or something. It is really weird that rejection emails are sent out before acceptance notifications are.

Apparently, 2015 Boston Snowpocalypse is impacting on–effectively delaying–the timely arrival of admissions news on MIT.

I think they will eventually throw you an email titled something like "Stanford Decision Posted" that will simply direct you to the online application system. So you won't be less disappointed if you actually had received any email. I'm just sharing my experience from 2 years ago. Oh well.

Congrats, lore. Given that the deadline for the PhD application submission to the English Graduate Program was 15th of January, your acceptance seems hella fast! It was January 20th for the Dept. of Linguistics. I expect to hear back from them by the end of next week or so, judging by the last year's admissions data. I have zero ideas on Toronto. It seems interesting that you're applying to SFU. Do you mind if I ask who your POI would be?
