  1. So, I've been trying to think of fun things to say during visits and interviews, particularly to overturn an embarrassing situation (e.g. "No, I'm not familiar with that book/scholar/theory.") So far, I've got: "γηράσκω δ᾽ αἰεὶ πολλὰ διδασκόμενος." (Sorry for the hyperlink; I didn't feel like typing out the Greek ). Anyone have anything good?
  2. We got some bad rain here, but I'm somewhat south and inland.
  3. Has anyone heard from UNC? I was sure that there would have been a few UNC results up by now.
  4. I'm...awkward in suits (I'm sort of short,) so I guess I'll rock a nice sweater and tie?
  5. Brown.
  6. How should I dress for a recruitment weekend? (I'm a man.)
  7. Well, you could go watch a few ship wrecks. That's what Lucretius would do.

  10. He reuses phrases and he transitions poorly and often quite suddenly into new thoughts, but not in a charming way.
  11. I interviewed with a history department last month, and they asked me what I was currently researchng, what I would like to work on if admitted, why I applied to that particular school, what I was looking for in a department, and what books/classes/historians have been most influential in shaping my interests. I asked about funding (it never hurts to ask), job placement rates, predictions/plans for departmental development and changes, and what made their department a great place to study. My interviewer seemed to like those questions. Well, he didn't seem to be offended, at least.
  12. I understand. Most of my comrades completely ignore the historical backgrounds of ancient literature, which leads to some incredibly inaccurate opinions (to my great annoyance ).
  13. In my opinion, the best ancient historians are also philologists, so I certainly have nothing against philology. For me and my interests, though, it's a means to an end and not an end in itself.
  14. Ok, maybe he's not terrible, but he's far more interesting as a politician than he is as a poet. Sorry that I'm not more philological, rsmease .
  15. Damn, now I've yet again begun to check the results board.
  16. Solon's poetry or placenta?
  17. I just read some of Solon's poetry. My God, he's a terrible poet.
  18. Pliny has the recipe too!
  19. I've gone home to visit my parents. Well, my parents' dog, to speak truthfully.
  20. Things will likely begin to look up in the UC system. The state recently voted in favor of tax increases to fund education.
  21. Yay!!!!! Congratulations!!!
  22. Woo!! Also: Happy Friday and Happy February! Also: (Maybe don't click if you're super squeamish or don't like bad tattoos.) http://waywardclassics.blogspot.com/2010/01/latin-tattoos.html
