  1. Yes, they have changed the process this year. Interviews then offers to a subset! Best of luck!
  2. I knew you would, from the first post.
  3. As with many departments, even if you don't hear anything by the deadline, you probably will hear something on or immediately following. Given the backlog of people accepting right until the deadline, departments shift around their spots and move people off the waitlist. I'm almost positive Pitt did this last year (after I declined my offer). It was my experience that some programs even pulled people off the "rejection" list and offered them admission with full funding. The short of it is, although the "official" deadline is the 15th, there are many unofficial things that get done to ensure that a program's cohort size will be sufficient. Good luck!!!
  4. Glad to hear. Hopefully your talks with Berk folk and people like Flacks were fruitful.
  5. So, I found out who it was... yes, was. That person has declined the offer from UMass. Groovy, if you don't know already, I'll let you in!
  6. The old scores can be found using web archives. The link takes a while to load, though. http://web.archive.org/web/20120223230755/http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-humanities-schools/sociology-rankings
  7. I was just going to post this, sir! Thanks!
  8. They've been doing poorly with funding, TTD and placements, relative to other programs (especially among UCs).

  10. Oh no... I guess I mistakenly read the post... None are going from Irvine to UMass. I was just referring to UMass' recent Irvine hires (about 3 in the last 3 years).
  11. Hmm... I'm wondering about the lag time between eval and report. Any idea? I'd hope that the evaluators would want to get the report out sooner rather than [three years] later.
  12. I get the sense that there's some high hopes for both Irvine and ND upward trends this round. I can't be upset and I agree! Aside from those, my speculations are: Berkeley drops 1 or 2. UNC drops CUNY drops Cornell rises Arizona drops 1 or 2 Minnesota drops UC Davis drops UC San Diego drops UMass rises Overall, the top 15 (~20) will look similar.
  13. Just a heads-up, most people get into SD with similar statuses. Funding at SD has been abysmal for the last couple of years (sources have told). Keep your ears open for "university-based" or "school-based" merit fellowships. You don't want to go into second year with nothing. But... I'm sure you've heard!!!
  14. Don't worry too much about ND, though. I was there last year. Luckily I knew the dept. A minor stud wont matter. Good goood gooooooood luck!
  15. For places that you're already in (i.e. already admitted), don't worry about it!!! I have obvious facial piercings, and no one cared. Some sort of alt style is more easily accepted in our field. I wouldn't worry too much about a small stud at places where you're interviewing for admission. However, if you've got a ring in, I'd take it out. Impression is still important (esp. in more traditional departments).
  16. By the way, an ND acceptance would mean you're funded entirely by RAships, with options for TAships once you reach candidacy. Just a thought! And of course, congratulations!
  17. Congrats! Yes, I was invited to the visit day last year. Here's how it goes: They invite you out the day before all the "festivities." So, you'll end up there on a Thursday afternoon/evening. After you're all settled, you'll probably head out to the local pub/grille with grad students (to which some faculty might attend). It's a mingle night at a bar with a bunch of prospectives (~18-20). Very informal. You're trying to meet the grad students and "feel them out" (and vice versa). The next morning is the 8-hour formal visit day. I would dress semi-professional (business casual) as you will be meeting with at least 3 faculty members (based on your interests). First there's an info session for about an hour or two (DGS and Chair). Next, a campus tour. Then a lunch-series talk with all graduate students and faculty. Next, you meet with faculty to get to know each member (with whom your interests align). Finally, you'll meet with one of the members of the adcom about your reasons and interests in the dept. That night, after all your hard work, there will likely be a grad student (only) party. Be yourself. Let your interests shine. Don't be pretentious/arrogant. No one likes that! Remember, this is only an invite. You're not in yet! Good luck all!
  18. It is a great feeling! Good luck with the rest!
  19. Agreed! Good luck, all!!! Honestly, you won't hear things this soon, though. Thinking back, I wondered why the adcoms didn't respond sooner. But as many of us are first years (in contact with graduate directors), I know that apps are usually off their radar til after finals. Keep up hope!
