  1. I am just finishing my undergrad at UVic -- as a general warning, our graduate students are not sufficiently funded. The GSS has been posting leaflets all over campus all year protesting the fact that funding for grad students at UVic is below tuition and cost of living expenses by a decent amount. I suggest that (unless you have a SSHRC) you ask some polite, but probing questions of the department about funding opportunities. UVic is a wonderful school and Victoria is a beautiful city (I'm typing this from my girlfriend's suite in Fernwood), but you really should be aware that money will be tight for you should you accept the offer of admission. And on a side note, I've officially accepted SFU's offer of admission for an MA in philosophy over Dal/Waterloo/Alberta. Just got a (very polite) rejection letter from U of T's PhD program today.
  2. Are you talking about specific disciplines? In my area (philosophy), all MAs are at least partially funded -- most of them are fully funded, but not with huge amounts of cash (you pull in around $4000-$6000 per semester). A non-funded masters is a deal-breaker as far as I'm concerned.
  3. For "academic fun" I'm reading Scott Soames' Philosophy of Language, David Lewis' On the Plurality of Worlds and Kit Fine's Semantic Relationism. For "actual fun" I'm reading From Russia With Love. Love me some James Bond.
  4. I got my acceptance to SFU's Philosophy MA on the 4th of this month, and from Waterloo on the 13th. Waitlist for Dal arrived on the 16th, still waiting for word from U of A. ... and I broke down tonight and e-mailed U of A. Which was ultimately a weird thing to do, because they were a backup to SFU. EDIT: Because it can matter for admissions decisions: I applied with interests in metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy of language. My writing sample was on modal epistemology. I say that this can matter for admissions decisions because it can be the case that universities are looking to admit students in specific areas -- for instance, I got an e-mail forwarded to me from York (I believe) saying that they were looking for MA students interested in feminist philosophy.
