  1. This may be of interest to history applicants. Here is the full list of history department rankings published in the 2008 edition. Note that they were last ranked in 2005. Enjoy History (Ph.D.) Ranked in 2005* Rank/School Average assessment score (5.0 = highest) 1. Yale University (CT) 4.9 2. Princeton University (NJ) 4.8 University of California
  2. Congratulations! Very happy for you
  3. Hey there, I am an undergrad at Pitt and a history major. I didn't apply to Pitt's grad program, but congrats to those who got in! If you guys have any questions, let me know. I will try to answer them for you (City life, department location, professors, etc)
  4. For Russian history......it's ranked almost 3 times higher than MSU.
  5. You want a story on lists, I got one for you. I called a program and just asked when decisions will be made since I have an offer on the table from another school. She told me I was #21 on a list of about 200...and I have to wait until next week until they count how many grad students will not be on campus next year to figure out how many TAships they can offer....they day I called, she said it looked like 20...so I miss it by one, but she said it may be 21 or 22. Talk about stress! To top it off, I can't even stay on the waitlist if I don't get in because I received a specific fellowship from another school whose deadline is april 4th...and get this...the school that I am ranked #21 has its visitation day on April 4th! So yeah...I hate lists...
  6. Just FYI, OSU will make decisions next week and notify via email.
  7. This is just a rant and a worry all thrown into one post.....it kinda sucks to be told that out of 200 applicants you are ranked 21 and that the program is only going to admit 20-22 people depending on how many teaching jobs are available, but probably 20 teaching jobs will be offered....and you have to wait until next week to find out that magic number! lol
  8. I haven't herard anything. I am worried that I will receive the letter when I am in Michigan this week. Please let me know if you hear anything!
  9. Hey all! Just curious...anyone going to the admitted students week at Michigan State this Sunday - Wednesday? If so, let me know! It would be nice to put a face to your online name..lol
  10. Can you add Ohio State? lol
  11. I am so with you on the wait for Ohio. I have heard nothing since I submitted my app on September 30th. It's driving me crazy. Everyone other school has at least sent an email..lol Have you heard anything?
  12. I got a package for history that was over 30k a year and included summer research grants for the first three years. I think it depends on your school and program and how much money they were given for the year.
  13. Anyone hear anything about Ohio State?
  14. Hey there, I study Russian history, so I worked with Bill Chase. I never had any of the two professors you mentioned, but I hear Oestricher is hard for undergrads. Also, look into Ted Muller, he studies urban planning in the US and is super nice! And Rob Rock does Sports history. They are both great teachers and very friendly.
  15. Hey there, I am an undergrad senior at Pitt now. I am also applying to grad schools for history. Just curious, who did you want to work with at Pitt?

    Languages

I know that language was necessary for my application. I study Russian history, and to be competitive my schools wanted at least two years of Russian, but three or four certinaly make you more competitive. They also require knowledge of French or German, but these are usually obtained in grad schools. Also, study abroad in the area you study also impresses the committee!

    East Lansing, MI

Hey Jewel, I was looking at the board, and wanted to tell you that I am got in for history and am going Sunday - Wednesday for admitted students day. I am leaning toward going to MSU and am already trying to figure out where I might live..lol Congrats on your acceptance!
  18. Hey now! I am the MSU acceptance and I am pretty sure I said Michigan State or MSU each time...lol And even specified I didn't apply to UMich. 8)
  19. Yes..How did you hear? I heard via phone. Did the professor finally sign the letters that have been sitting on her desk for a week? lol I am curious. Sorry to hear you were rejected Amanda1655. UIUC was my first choice...and the rejection totally ruined my day!
  20. Ouch Minnesotan..lol That was harsh. Honestly...I think with the stats you listed in your original post..most people in this forum shouldn't be in grad school haha

    Next Week

Don't worry Minnesotan..you'll get in somewhere else with great funding

    Next Week

Sorry to hear Minnesotan...which school was it?
  23. It's officially driving me crazy...I want to hear from OSU..lol The only recorded admission was last year on Feb. 8th. Does anyone know anything or did you hear anything. Are there any other OSU applicants as impatient as me?
  24. I have a 3.7 overall and a 3.97 in history. I applied to history phd programs with 590V, 540Q, and 5.5AWA. So far I got rejected by one school, and received a full fellowship, stipend, and additional summer research grants and paid 4 day trip to another school. Clearly, it depends on a lot of factors. Don't worry!
  25. Do you really want to go to a place that weeds people out like that? All schools do to an extent, but my advisor told me that Yale is so rigid that you'll barely have room to conduct innovative research that will get past the old school tenures. He said he wouldn't send his best students there anymore because of the attitude. Sure getting into Yale is great, but do you want to be in that environment for 5- 7 years?
