  1. I'm slightly worried about my quant too - I got a 166 verbal (96th percentile) but only 149 quant (39th percentile!!!!! ). Still waiting on my Analytical scores but I'm feeling good about them. Does it look bad to email to ask programs what they think of quant scores? I've heard from profs that they often don't matter - a prof of mine who graduated from USC said she scored similarly low on hers but still got in - but I wonder if it varies from program to program. The only American schools I'm applying to are UMich (IPCAA) and UT Austin and I imagine these are highly competitive programs...
  2. I've been working through a few Kaplan books - I have the general book and then a math workbook and a verbal workbook. I also bought a book with 1,014 practice questions so I anticipate that will also help. I'm definitely feeling more comfortable than I was earlier, although some math questions still have me at a loss. I'm wondering about the merits of investing in a deck of GRE flash cards, but the Kaplan books have great word lists at the back, and the experience with Latin and Greek I have behind me help as well. Thank you all!
  3. Hello, Thank you both for your responses! I've been doing some studying over the last couple of week and the math is getting easier, although I definitely have a couple of major weak points. Still, I am less worried now, and knowing that it's not as big a deal as I first thought is helping me focus a bit more.
  4. In high school I thought I would be a bad-ass and stop taking math in Grade 11. I finished that course just before I turned seventeen. I am now twenty-two and preparing to apply for Fall 2013 entry into graduate programs and, lo and behold, the GRE is a requirement for American universities... and there's MATH involved. I'm quite terrified? I'm not only applying to American schools, but as I am not applying to many Canadian schools and I worry about funding in the UK, I need to keep my options open. So, my question is - does anyone know how much weight is actually put on the Quantitative Reasoning scores when applying for Ancient History/ Classical Archaeology programs? I've got practice books and I'm slowly making my way through them, but I've just hit the math portion and I have panicked immediately. I was not terrible at it in high school, I just had absolutely no love for it, and am (understandably?) out of practice after all these years revelling in a mathless academic life. Can the scores on the other sections of the test redeem me? What if I have a decent GPA, good references, a good set of preperatory research and practical experiences during undergrad, etc.? Is a low quantitative score going to completely destroy any hope of admission to an American university?
  5. Hm - I had a similar question - I am going to be applying for Fall 2013 admission and plan to sit the GRE this fall... I was aiming for October but it seems like November 3rd might be the best choice (I have a few days off from school preceding that date)... but if OP's date is pushing it, maybe November 3rd is a little too late as well?
  6. I plan to take the GRE later on this year (in the fall, hopefully). I haven't been enrolled in a math course in about five years and I really don't know what to expect. I plan to buy as many different study books and practice tests as possible, because I'm freaking out a bit, but I'm wondering if that might actually be detrimental. Is it better to stick with one sort of study plan, or to take bits from them all? Or will the latter method only serve to confuse me? Also, is a GRE prep course worth the ~$500 fee? That's a hit on my wallet but I think it could be worth it in the end if I did well and managed to secure a spot + funding somewhere.
  7. Popping in here even though I'm not personally applying til later on in the year... but a friend of mine has heard back from both York and Alberta (for MA Ancient History and MA Classical Archaeology respectively), if anyone is waiting on news from either school, although from what I heard from him, Alberta is lagging with their offers right now.
