That's a good one ahaha! I'm planned to brainstorm things to say in those situations but haven't gotten around to doing that just yet. I'm so nervous about my recruitment weekend! On the bright side I've already made contact with two others who are interviewing with IPCAA so it's nice to know people who will be there too (even if they're kind of the competition...)

Anyone else snowed in or has the storm not hit the American northeast too badly yet? People have been snowshoe-ing, cross-country skiing, and dog-sledding through the streets of Toronto today. My university cancelled all of the day's activities and classes, and the stairs leading down to my basement apartment looks more like a great hill for tobogganing...
-
I'd better fetch my blazers from my parents' house before I head down to Ann Arbor then! I was wondering the same thing haha
-
Cold! Big snowstorm has just started here!

Wow, lots of new results! Who got invited to recruitment weekend at Ann Arbor for Classical Studies? I wonder if it's the same weekend as IPCAA! Might see you there if it is!

Seems I'm in the opposite boat. There are pretty much no lit people in my undergrad program right now. The Program in Classical Studies offers two degrees, one in Classical Studies (some language but mostly history and humanities courses) and another in Classics (mostly lang/ lit). I don't think we currently have any Classics majors in the program... and a lot of the Classical Studies students are jumping ship over to History, sadly. Edit: Also, interview-related question! I'm freaking out a little bit. The director of IPCAA is going to be contacting me via telephone this weekend, ahead of my attendance at their recruitment weekend in March. I am not really sure what I should say! I feel like I should avoid sounding over-eager but I also have no idea what he's going to ask me, or what he's going to expect me to ask. I suppose it's much too early to be asking about funding... and that's a bit of a silly question anyway, since I know IPCAA students are well-funded. Do I stick to talking about the recruitment weekend and then ask my more important questions at that time? Help!

Don't feel silly; when I brought it to the Saturnalia party in 2011 a room full of Classicists wouldn't stop making jokes about it all evening!

Nope, I meant placenta - that's with a hard C! Click the link rsmease pasted and you'll find a blog with ancient recipes. Placenta is a sort of dessert! Quite good - layers of dough, ricotta, and honey.
-
What a fun blog! I've made placenta with the spelt flour a couple of times - once for the family, once for a Saturnalia party. I liked it quite a lot but it seems like the blogger had a less than pleasing experience and opted for filo instead! Still, the rest of the recipes look awesome and a few make me wish I had a functioning oven at my apartment

Do you eat them once you've peeled them? I cook a lot when I'm nervous so I've been throwing together some healthy, delicious concoctions when I'm taking a break from homework/ research. It helps!

Delay between Admissions Office and School?
ciistai replied to ciistai's topic in Letters of Recommendation
Well, I've had my profs email their letters directly to the programs now, but it seems like Admissions at Cardiff has somehow lost an ELECTRONIC letter. I am not sure how they did this! -
And on another note - Cardiff has managed to lose an ELECTRONIC letter of recommendation from one of my referees. How?!?!?!!?!?!!

I... have an interview in Ann Arbor in March. I can't even believe this.

Thanks for the link! As a Canadian myself I see where the CAC is coming from when they say they don't like the idea of CANA. I personally like American Classical Association but I know that will indeed be confusing between ACA and ACL. Maybe something that starts with Society or Institute is best. To be perfectly honest I actually see the whole thing as unnecessary but I do understand their reasons behind the decision.
-
Congratulations!! (Also out of curiosity, although we know it wasn't fake - why would anyone fake a result? I've seen people on other boards in the forum call out certain result submissions as fake but I cannot understand why anyone would do such a thing...) Conscia Fati - I thought it was just APA changing the name, didn't know AIA would do it as well?
-
No problem, and good luck!! Hopefully we'll both get good news!

Hm, just saw this message posted on the UTexas Status Check thing... don't remember it being there last time I checked: "Attention: Your file has been forwarded to the Graduate Committee for review. As soon as a decision is made on your application, it will be posted on this page, and you will be notified by email." I guess they're meeting quite soon. Good luck to anyone who applied there, although I'm not sure any of the more frequent posters here have!

Well, I quite love what I do, but I've only recognized over the last few years how much wider the world of archaeology is! Of course when I was a kid, all I thought about when it came to archaeology were the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians. Everyone else seems to be working in such interesting fields that I feel mine has just become a bit typical! Nevertheless, someone has to do it! We've spent no time at all on pre-Romans in any of my classes during undergrad... maybe ten minutes at the most, and that was focused on the Samnites. Frustrating! Not sure how I recall how I ever came to this interest myself!

I'm a big fan of the Kindle lately so I'm looking forward to that day... although to be honest that's just for portability purposes! I think at my home base I'll still have shelves and shelves of books (if I have the room for them, that is). Also, that's awful about two inboxes, rsmease! I'm going mad checking just one! I keep thinking of reasons why today's going to be the day I hear from someone. Oh, it's a Monday! Oh, it's midweek! Oh, February 1st is coming, surely I'll hear from someone!

Sounds like a familiar place to be... I swear I might be in the same place you are... I know it's still kind of early, but this is getting nerve-wracking.
-
Hi pears! I'm just a boring old classical archaeology buff - mostly pre-Roman Italy. My main interests are urban/ settlement archaeology and ethnic identity although I have a growing interest in cultural heritage preservation on the side. I've applied to Alberta, UBC, UMich (IPCAA), UT Austin, Oxford, Cardiff, and King's College London. I've also applied to St. Andrews, but to their Ancient History program. I haven't had any news back yet!
-
Not yet, but the committee met yesterday. Also, anyone know if UT Austin has met yet?
-
Quiet... tense... seems like everyone's still waiting with bated breath for responses. I know the IPCAA (UMich) committee met today and they're one of my top choices so I had a very nervous, unsettled afternoon. Otherwise not much to report. A few schools seem to have sent out their Classics/ Classical Arch responses but not THAT many, maybe 4 or 5.
