I'll be 26. After getting my MA in '09, I taught for two yrs as an adjunct/part-time instructor and am now going back for my PhD in art history.

I decided to accept admissions/funding from the University of Iowa. I will be working with Barbara Mooney and Robert Bork (and a few others) studying revival architecture in 19th/20th-century Europe and America and minoring in Medieval art/architecture. My MA focus is Medieval art/architecture, and I have a strong background in 19th/20th century architecture...I have a broad range of interests, so this program and the faculty are a great fit! I was accepted to other programs (some with funding), but this was the best fit! I'm very excited to begin!

It looks like you're still waiting on some programs...might funding be available and you just haven't heard? Or, does it look pretty bleak at this point?

Were you able to receive funding (if you don't mind me asking)? What are the disadvantages/advantages? I was in a similar boat. I was offered a year full-time visiting instructor position...or I could accept admissions to UW-Madison or UIowa. Hmmm...

Good afternoon all! Has anyone made a decision on where they are going for their art history MA/PhD and why? I was struggling with the NRC rankings for awhile, as I was trying to discern whether or not I should select the program with better ratings. However, many advised me that it's best to go with a program where it's a better fit, where there will be great opportunities for me to thrive, etc. In any case, anybody accept any offers? Hello! I know how both of you feel. Two years ago, I applied to seven programs and was rejected by all. I fell apart for awhile, but I had a decision to make - work to improve my resume and beef up my apps or choose a different career path. I decided to do the former. It was hard work, and I went out on a limb many times. However, I landed some adjunct positions, which turned into more adjunct positions. I then decided to work on some individual research, participate in academic conferences, etc. I reapplied two years later (this season) and was more selective in the programs. I made sure I connected with the faculty members and discussed what they were looking for in applicants, etc. I was a bit worried, because my schedule didn't allow me to apply to as many schools as I wanted to, but I was accepted with great funding and will be working with fantastic scholars. Keep you head up! I was there, and I know it's hard. However, there's always next year! My regards and best wishes.

Hello - I was required to take a language examination for my MA (I had to take it before I could start writing my thesis) even though I had passed a French translation course (at the graduate level). I had some coursework in Italian, but for the translation (reading ability in Italian), I bought an Italian grammar book and did some intense studying. I also practiced by translating art history articles from JSTOR. I passed my exam (I had two parts - I had one hr to translate an article with a dictionary and one hr to translate an article without a dictionary). For my PhD, I will have to also pass the French or German language exam (I haven't decided which...).

I noticed that you applied to BU. I just contacted my POI, and he emailed the admissions committee to inquire. Apparently, they are just finishing reviewing apps and are now making decisions. I hoped he would have told me if I was in the 'rejection' pile, because I indicated that I was feeling a bit of pressure from other programs to make a decision. I'm going crazy as well! I didn't apply to many programs...mainly because I didn't have the time. I just want it to be over.

Thank you for sending this along! I'm in a bit of a pickle. I have been accepted to a couple of programs, both with great funding packages, but I am hoping to get into School C, which doesn't usually send out acceptances until mid-March (and even so, funding decisions come later). Do you think it's worth the wait? I went ahead and emailed my POI.

Anybody hear from Boston University?

Hey! I know that Oklahoma has a great program. I have a friend who lives there and frequently talks about it. Did you have a chance to visit? I just heard from UW-Madison today, but I'm going into a different field (architecture). I applied a few yrs ago and was rejected. The difference is that I completed my MA and had a few yrs of teaching experience. I also changed my focus. Good luck!

I also have not heard from Rutgers. I send out an email a week and a half ago, Monday (to the Art History Dept.), and they said they'd tell me by the end of last week. Well, they still have yet to tell me, and it's driving me nuts!

I'm right there with you. I have one more school that I'm still waiting on, but the chances aren't looking great. However, I'm not giving up, even if all this rejection put a huge dent in my pride.

Regarding schools yet to give notice to applicants, has anyone received notice from Johns Hopkins? I saw from the running results that someone phoned the department, and they said that rejection letters were to be mailed out last week.
