  1. I got into my dream program. BPhil from Oxford. I'm from the U.S. Does anyone know if I have a shot of getting by and paying for tuition with loans (maybe financial aid?) if they give me no funding?
  2. Thanks for the info. I was looking on the site and they do offer a Masters in Philosophy. It's just something that you need to be a PhD student to apply to it.
  3. I'm no expert, but my guess is that people reject offers all the time. I mean imagine how many schools people apply to even though they want to go to one particular one. I'd say the chances are good that they take a few from the waitlists.
  4. I got a BA in philosophy and I was thinking "ok, the next step to getting your PhD is an MA". So, I applied for MA programs. After I found out that everyone applies straight to PhD programs, I started thinking "hmm, well maybe it will look better when I apply to PhD programs if I already have an MA?" Any ideas anyone? I want a PhD in philosophy. I've been hearing that it might make it harder to get a PhD from a different school than the one that you get your Masters.
  5. I want to get my PhD in Philosophy, but applied for an MA. Have I messed up my chances of going on my way for a PhD? For example, is it likely that I can continue going to the school I get my MA from and receive my PhD from them? What does what I have done mean?
  6. I thought that I had to get a Masters before I got a Phd, so when University of Chicago offered a Phd in philosophy and a masters in humanities with a concentration in philosophy, I applied for the latter. Can I get my Phd after this? Is it equivalent to getting a masters in Philosophy from UofC? I would have applied for the Phd program if I knew I could. They do have a masters in philosophy, but what you get while you are going after your Phd. What is this masters in humanities that I applied for?
  7. Well, I've been reading on this site and it seems to me that the only problem that could arise would be if the school does rolling admissions. I think this is when the school decides on applicants as soon as the applications are submitted. So the earlier that you submit your application, the more spots are available. Other than that, there seems to be no problem with you submitting your application before the deadline.
  8. I would try calling them to see if they can slide you in. Most schools I have called have been extremely polite and helpful over the telephone. One school manually submitted my application 2 weeks after the deadline.
  9. I'm thinking of joining the peace corp to do something "fulfilling" for a couple years, then reapply. If either of those don't work out, then I guess it's business in the daytime and self study at night. For some reason, as much as I would LOVE to go to graduate school, it seems fine.
  10. I was checking this site out and was searching and searching to see what people got into with differently weighted applications, and I thought that I would begin a thread where Philosophy majors can write there basic stuff and decisions school made (accepted or denied). I thought it might be useful (or at least desired) during this stressful time. (Hope this isn't already listed under a different thread). Anyway, I have a B.A. in Philosophy from UCLA. 3.829 GPA (3.977 Major GPA). GRE Scores: Verbal-153 (62%), Quanitative- 157 (77%), Analytic 4.0 (48%) I scrounged up a writing sample and letters of recommendations, so I don't think they were so hot. Don't think I had such a strong statement of purpose. No honors really because I was a transfer student and didn't apply for Greek honors. Only hear back from Princeton so far--DENIED. Hope this helps.
