  1. On the day(s) you are there, drink a good amount of alcoholic beverages with students after you're done with classes.
  2. I just received word that I will be presenting two papers at the SBL/AAR national meeting. Do you think I need to contact the chairs/steering committees to let them know this just in case the highly unlikely event occurs that the two sections are scheduled for the same time? Or should I wait, and contact them only if this unlikely event occurs when the schedule comes out?
  3. I would think that is good news. Certainly better news than 'denied,' anyway.
  4. For those that applied to UT-Austin, it looks like rejections are on the website. I checked after seeing that someone posted on the results page. Sure enough, not too surprisingly, there was the rejection. That was the last program I was waiting to hear from. Decision time it is.
  5. Congratulations! However, I would think your good news probably significantly diminishes my chances of getting funding off of the the waitlist. Nonetheless, it is great to see that someone who deffered at Marquette got funded. Here's to hoping some folks decline their offers and they want more JCA/NT students!
  6. That is helpful. The director did tell me that at least x number of people would need to go elsewhere for me to receive funding. He also said there were other factors the department has to consider based on the way they do their waitlist. It was a bit unclear. Last year I did not hear a final word about funding until the end of April. I'll need to be making decisions before then this go around. Last year I had a classmate who received his admittance a bit later, but did not receive a funding offer. This year I was just given an update on my situation, so there could very well be more offers coming in the near future.
  7. Does anyone have any insider knowledge about Marquette's wait list? From what I can gather, they send out many more offers of admission than they can fund. I have talked to a number of individuals who were admitted, but were not offered funding in past application cycles (this seems to be the trend across all the Religion Department's sub-fields). This happened to me last year, and it seems it will happen again this year (admitted, funding pending...). I'm not necessarily holding my breath for any offer to come through for financial aid, but also don't want to make any decisions about other programs until I know what exactly all my options are. I spoke with the director, and he was not able to give me an idea of where I am on the list. There does not seem to be a whole lot of Marquette rejections in years past. Is this wait list a mile long?
  8. You may want to look into DU/Iliff's joint PhD program. This is not my field at all, so I may be off on this; however, I believe there are a number of students there that are interested in something similar to this. Edward Antonio and Miguel De La Torre may be POIs you could contact. http://www.du.edu/duiliffjoint/
  9. It may be that more MA/MDiv students apply to top-tier programs than submit SBL/AAR proposals. This is probably due to the aforementioned requirement that first-time presenters submit a full draft of the paper to be read. Either you have to write a paper that fits a given section's call for papers, or you have to have already written a paper that fits the call well. The number of students accepted to top-tier programs may be higher than those that present at the national meeting, but I would think the percentage of success would be higher among those who submit proposals. Getting a paper accepted isn't a cake walk, but I know several MA/MDiv students who've had success with their proposals.
  10. I've wondered what weight presentations in professional meetings have on admittance/how much committees factor these into decisions. Before this application cycle, I had high hopes that they would be heavily weighed. I'm beginning to think they may not be incredibly significant. I had two proposals accepted to the national meeting last year and two at regional meetings in the last two years. I've received one acceptance and one rejection (with another presumed rejection). It'd be interesting to hear from those who have been accepted to high profile programs how many presentations they've given at these kinds of meetings. (Caveat: I recognize that all applications are about the candidate as a whole--presentations certainly wouldn't make or break an applicat, but they certainly couldn't hurt!)
  11. Duke rejections/waitlists sent out this morning.
  12. I have the same issue as EndlessAshley--a number of my courses (especially upper-level language) are listed as independent studies. Also, my transcripts don't list instructors, which may or may not be significant. I've listed my relevant coursework as a sort of appendix on the longer version of my CV.
  13. Thanks for the input. Suspicions confirmed.
  14. I know this may not be the proper place for this question, but I am going to ask for you all's opinion here anyway. I was asked in the last week to give a couple lectures for two different upper-division Bible courses at a local university. My question is whether or not I should send programs an updated CV that would reflect these lectures. A little over a month ago I sent a few programs an updated CV because I had a paper accepted to a regional conference and had a paper published that was previously forthcoming. At that point, the application deadlines had not been reached, so I felt justified in doing so. Thoughts? Would it be beneficial? Or would I just be being a nuisance to the secretaries?
