  1. I am a current slp and have a daughter that recently graduated with her masters in speech, and became aware of this site when she was applying. Now I just nose around once in a while and help when I can. I have seen heartache from many applicants on this site and know some personally that did not get into graduate schools. My friend is the director of a program in PA. He states that it is so difficult right now to get into a program that an applicant with less than a 3.5 will have a difficult time getting in anywhere. It sounds like you are struggling with the basic subjects so I will be honest and suggest you not waste any more time and money on this major. Find another major that is a better fit for you. There are majors out there that you may never have been aware of. I strongly suggest you go to your schools career center for guidance. They can give you a test that can help match careers with your interests and abilities. Most if not all colleges offer this service free of charge for its students. Don't give up on college, just find the right area of study. Good Luck!
  2. I think that is very normal. It is hard to turn down something someone has 'given' you. It goes against our nature. Daughter struggled back and forth from day to day, sometimes within a day! I hope she made the right decision. I helped gather information, but the decision had to be made by her. Debt scared her and in the end she went for the best financial deal...but it still hurts--her and me!
  3. MA turned down: University of Maryland half funded Boston College half funded GWU Loyola Chicago Boston University Northeastern
  4. D will be graduating from GW in May so her place will be available mid June or July 1. She has a GREAT location right in Foggy Bottom behind the hospital and it is a great deal for the area, but it is still pricy by my standards as she is alone in a studio-$1550. Many of the other units in her building go for 1600-2400. Her place is small but good enough for one person or a married couple. It is safe and convenient to GW- 2min, FB Metro stop 2 min, Georgetown shopping -5min, Dupont Circle 8 min, White House-10 min. etc. In DC the best way to find a place is Craigslist. If you see something of interest, you need to move quickly as things are gone in one or two days. You can set it so you can try to find a roommate. Some of the buildings allow renters to divide units with temporary walls that look permanent. It is worth it if you are going to be there a while or if you can find someone that has already done it and is looking for someone to take over one of the units. Then you might get a place in that area for ~900-1k a month. The first year D lived in Chrystal City for 1K along with 2 others. It was far from everyone so I would not rx that. There are places in Arlington just over the river that are also busy young areas, but I am not sure it is much cheaper if at all. Keep in mind that DC subways charge by how far you go and what time of day it is.
  5. About Georgetown D just now told me which associateships she had applied for, basically all but the last, which was more about poetry and she did not feel it was a strength for her. She has been working as a writing consultant for 3.5 years and ultimately wants to work in editing. Oh well. Congratulations to anyone that got/gets the funding.
  6. D was also sent the email from Georgetown stating that she was near the top of the alternate list for funding. Does anyone ever turn them down leaving a spot for an alternate? There are at least two that got this email here. What are the chances?....oh well. She has 4 other funded offers, but this would have been nice. It's time to decide, but she is unsure. Every program has its pluses and minuses. To the person who heard from GW: Was your application for the PhD or MA program? D applied for MA, but has not heard from them yet.
  7. Still have heard nothing about funding from Georgetown here...D needs to make a decision. I wish she would hear one way or the other.
  8. You guys are great! You're teachers who cannot stop finding opportunities to teach. I hope you find yourselves standing in the positions where you deserve to be. I am older and not necessarily wiser, but I respect you so much. Thank you for starting this thread and being who you are. Good luck to all of you!
  9. Do few people major in English if they want to publish/edit? Do most folks interested in publishing pursue an advanced degree in publishing or do they go into the work force directly with the BA?
  10. The debt questions are mine as well. What do you ultimately wish to do as a career? Congratulations on UVA. That is great! I really thought today would be a big result day for the MA applicants.
  11. D has been accepted to three MA programs all with some funding. She is waiting for more results, but there is some pressure to respond by at least one of the admits. One program is ranked out of the top 100, but with full tuition and 10K+ year stipend. The other programs are significantly higher ranked and offer basically two years of free tuition. One is in a "publishing" town. How important is location and ranking for a job in the world of publishing? I have no idea how to advise her.
  12. I will just be upfront with all of you. I am not the applicant. I am the parent. Many times I have deleted comments I wanted to make, ideas I wanted to share, and questions I wanted to ask because I felt like an invader. This is your space, true, but as a parent of a MA applicant I want so much to thank you all for the information I have learned here. This is not my or my husband's field of study. My D doesn't tell us a lot about how things work with English departments, and in her case, the world of Publishing, but she will want our opinion on which program she should select. I feel if I don't start this now I won't be able to thank you all for the help so far and also pick your brains for what I still don't know. Does anyone here know anything about the book publishing field? Does rank and location of university matter and if so how much?
  13. I feel like this forum is starting to wind down. It feels sad even for those with happy outcomes as you all go your separate ways. Congratulations to all that were admitted to a place you're happy with and good luck in determining your next option and making it happen if you were disappointed with the results this year. But what about the MA applicants? Results are just starting to come in now. Are there so few applying at that level anymore or are they just not on Grad Cafe? Anyone here lurking and looking for MA information?
  14. Oh ignore the Speech Path program above. I am not usually on this site. That was for two years ago and D1.
  15. It is hard to know for sure where and when funding will come. I have seen posters here say they applied to a school because the school stated on their website that funding was available for Masters level study only to find out later that it was not offered after all. D was just accepted to a program with 2/3 tuition waiver and a stipend after she was told in December that no money was available for Masters level students at that university.
  16. George Washington University for sure has an active group.
  17. karish11 Do you need the metro for any reason? D knows she needs to do an internship in VA this fall, so she wants to be near the blue and orange metro lines. She also likes to study in a library rather than her bedroom, so she wanted to be close to GW for the library and Metro direct to VA. If you are only going to campus everyday you could look for a place around Dupont or Logan circle as well as Foggy Bottom as they are not a bad walk to campus. The red line for the Metro (Which is in Dupont) does not go directly to Foggy Bottom. You could walk it faster than go to metro center and transfer. I would not recommend going to most residential areas of Georgetown as there is no great direct way to get to Foggy Bottom. Dupont Circle, Woodly Park, Adams Morgan are all pretty active with restaurants and pubs/bars for the post grads and up. Foggy Bottom is good, but less active at night as there are more offices and campus buildings in the area along with the residential areas. Dupont seems to be the hub of activity. Good news! D got a call from the 4 BR share she wanted. It's not final, but looking very good. It takes daily watching on Craigslist. I can't stress that enough. Be prepared to act fast if you see something you are interested in. By that I mean don't wait even a day to respond to an ad. Things move very quickly if it is priced right.
  18. I may be able to help answer some of the questions about the Foggy Bottom/Dupont areas as D is in her second year of grad school at GW. She has been living in No VA for the last year. She had a huge 3 bedroom apt with 2 baths at 1k +utilities for her share. She wants to move into the district in June. She is still busy with school and will be this summer so... I am doing the preliminary work and sending her ads that I think she may be interested in. Craigslist is definitely the most productive way to find things. You can choose to open only the area you want and can filter for the costs as well. You can view shares/rooms or go for a studio on your own, but it is expensive. You need to check every day as things move quickly especially if it is lower in costs. D called about a share for a 4br 2ba place in a great location. The apt was originally 2br, but they had two more rooms added from a large living room. I guess that is pretty common there. D said you would never have known they weren't original walls. This allowed the rent to go for less than 1k per person all utilities included. She viewed it and would have loved to have joined the group, but there were others there as well and she didn't get chosen. Don't know if someone bid more or if they just liked the other person more...whatever. Her lease isn't up until June 30, but would start paying now if she found something cheap enough to make out in the long run. Sharing is definitely the better way to go. I am still hoping she will do that. There are some really nice places within 3-5 walking minutes from campus and the Metro for three roomies. There are some studio's just south of campus for 1200. That is about as low as I have seen in the area if you don't want to share. Most student studios are around 1600-1800 in that area. Again: craigslist is the way to go.
  19. ^ good for you then. You should be okay. I don't know what your stats are, but as I said, it looks like a broad list. Good Luck!
  20. I went to the College of Saint Rose ... a very long time ago. There was no stress like this then. You just pretty much went where you wanted to go. St Rose was located where I lived at the time. It was a good program-very clinically oriented, which is what I wanted and still do. Doing research did not interest me, but I am always happy to pass on questions/trends I see "in the trenches" that need to be studied.
  21. If you haven't done so already, make sure all your applications are complete. A friend of daughter's did not get an acceptance last year. When she checked into it, some of her applications were never processed as they were incomplete. I hope she has better luck and is more diligent about checking early this year.
  22. ^You have a nice variety of schools. I work with students from Clarion and you also applied to my alma mater!
  23. Don't be so sure. I, an older slp, am creeping on this site this year. I was consumed by it last year for my daughter who was in the application process, just as you all are now, but too busy with school to check this all out. She applied to 11 schools, many of the same you all list. She had some quick acceptances while others she heard from a couple, few and many days later than the first round acceptances. Then on April 1 (I think that was the day students needed to reply by), she got acceptances from all the others--except one waitlist, that, as far as I know, she never did hear from again. Interestingly, she was offered scholarship money from a top program after initially being waitlisted. You never know how this is all going to go. If your stats are good --it's a lot of luck. Relax and good luck. It's a great profession. I have never regretted it! PS- I am surprised about the MGH notices by email. They called each person last year and from what I saw quite a few years before that...maybe somebody retired or left. I hope no one is ticked about having a senior on the site. I learned a lot last year and was curious how it was going this year.
  24. Congratulations Wannabeslp on Ohio State (and the others). Almost certain on GW, but waiting till after the open house to be sure.
  25. Thank you so much for all that information. It sounds like a good program. The contacts with the staff thus far have been very positive, which seems to go along with your comments. Will be going to the open house in two weeks, but pretty certain this will be the place. How easy is it to internship in GW Hospital? Do you know if there a voice clinic in the hospital? Thanks again for all the information. Super exciting!
