  1. Hi everyone!

I am currently finishing my MA at UConn and in the process of applying for Ph.D programs. After settling to the universities where I was going to apply, I am struggling with doubts about one of them - Stony Brook. They openly say in the online application to my program that they are not accepting applications for most programs in the department because of funding. Then, the submission of the materials has proven very troubling: they do not accept digital files of your transcripts, for example. You have to send the hard copy to them. All of this has made me think if SB is a good option. Does anyone know how things work in the Music department?

    Thanks.

  2. I'll be there as well. Just found out. Looking for housing and a job for my wife, who just got her MSW. I'm hoping to find housing that I could ride a bike from and get to campus in a reasonable amount of time.

On that aspect of housing, I cannot offer much help. I confess I do not know the area and since I will be commuting from New Haven, I did not have the need to prospect it.

    Good luck with everything, Phyllo!

  3. I will be!

    Hi, sociologyplease!

By your nickname I am guessing we will not be at the same department. :P But is good to know! Is the Sociology department located in the Storrs campus?

  4. okay, it's done! Chicago it is! (Perhaps with purpledinosaur??)

now to try to turn my fear/nerves/nausea into excitement! ajksdsalkdjsakldjsaldkjaldksjdlajskslajdksaljdsakdasl

    Good for you! :)

It's going to be great! Change is always good! ;)

    Good luck!

  5. congrats E.S.!

I am in agony over my decision, which I had planned to have by today.

    Thanks Snes!

Whatever is the reason for your indecision, try to rationalize your reasons to go and not to go. Analyze them in a logical approach, see which one makes more sense and ultimately follow your guts. We always know what is better for us. Sometimes we just choose to do the opposite thing. Always go for what makes you happy. :)

    Good luck! :)

  6. Big congratulations to you!!! Waiting until the very end does pay off after all :) Congrats again!

Thanks!! Yes, I guess it pays off. But still, they should not make us suffer this much. Wish you the best of luck for those 3 you are still waiting to hear from.

  7. The agony is over! Yesterday afternoon I received an email from the director of graduate admission offering me admission with assistantship! Hooray!

Wish you all the very best. Good luck! And if something does not work the way you would like, do not give up! Keep on fighting! This was my third application attempt (not to this institution, though). Stay strong because someone will understand your real value.

    Cheers!

  8. I collect every piece of courage and strength still left in me and I called grad school. They told me that since my application was complete they didn't know anything about decisions because that was the department's responsibility. I called the department. The lady asked for my last name and program I had applied for and then told me: "Oh, ok. I will have to go back to the graduate admissions' director and I will call you tomorrow". I am doomed... I can feel it... :(

  9. Not that this site isn't like desperate grad applicants anonymous as it is. I'm going to need at least a week of cognitive reboot after this is over.

You bet! After all this is over (and with the best results for all of us, I hope), I am going to need some paradisiac vacations. B)

It's not only cognitive reboot! In my case, I will have to put on all the weight I have lost in the last month. I am skinny, so if I keep on loosing weight this way I will become invisible (for real! Not in this virtual way forums and grad school make us feel)!

  10. I've been accepted into their MSW program (West Hartford campus) but it also took a while for them to get back to me. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you both!

Congratulations Michelle! I wish you the best of luck for your degree. Thank you for you positive vibe! ^_^

  11. I know! It's been hard to be understanding when it's your future on the line...but nonetheless they let me know last week I'm on their "short list"! A month seems like a long time to go without hearing anything...especially since April 15th is coming up so quickly. I would definitely e-mail your contact person about what the deal is.

Yes... A month seems too long for me, really. I am not getting a very good feeling about this...

Anyway, I am assuming April 15th is the last day for the applicants reply to their admissions' offers. Is that right? (If you, understandably, are wondering about this question, I am international student. There are a lots of details that I didn't mastered yet so sorry if some of my questions seem dull :P ).

My husband had suggested that I contacted them to ask how was my application but I keep wondering if that is appropriated. Could that be considered rude and play against me?

  12. I applied to their I/O Psychology PhD program and it's been taking that department forever to get back to people as well. I just found out last week about my wait listed status. Not sure if that necessarily means the entire school has been slower but I know they've had a record number of apps this season [at least for my program].

Thanks Mkeegin! As selfish as this might sound, at least I am not alone on this stressful waiting. I know that the University had some troubles just to put all applications together because they started with the application online option this year and apparently the system crashed. And that may justify some delays. But since it has been almost a month since I went to the interview... I did you find out about your status?

  13. I think you are focusing on the bad things. In my opinion, you should be focusing on the fact that, firstly, you were accepted (I am still waiting for an answer after being rejected in the past 2 years); then, you were accepted at the place you have always dreamed about! Isn't that amazing?! You are going to make a dream come true, either if it is your terminal degree or not. I face life like a constant school so for me it will never exist such thing as a terminal degree. You could try to forget that that is your terminal degree. You never know. Plus, if you happen to not being happy about your degree or your dream school, change can happen in a blink of an eye. You just need to want it too. Think positive, always focus on the good side of things and everything will be just great! ;)

  14. Hi, I am about to accept an offer of admission to an MS/PhD program. I've been told it's fine if I leave after my MS to just have an MS, but I don't know if it's okay to leave after my MS to pursue a PhD elsewhere. The letter keeps referring to my acceptance to the doctoral program, but my funding is masters funding and they mention that funding for the PhD is competitive and that my file will be reviewed before I'm officially allowed to continue on to the PhD after my MS. I don't know where I want to do my PhD, I am happy to complete at this institution, but I also have family factors that may require me to move eventually, or I might not receive what I consider to be enough funding. It doesn't say anywhere that I can't go elsewhere for my PhD, but I don't really know all the ins and outs of graduate admissions.

Sometimes, what happen is that the institutions only give Master degrees to the Ph.D students. In other words, one cannot apply to a master degree program. It has to apply to a Ph.D program and, once accepted, has given the opportunity of getting the master degree by passing an exam at the end of the second year. Couldn't that be your case? If so, the founding you will receive refers already to the Ph.D, I suppose. You can also try to get that question clarified as well as the institution's policies on transfers.

    Good luck
