  1. I know this is an old thread, but just saw it and wanted to throw in my two cents. I'm a Romanist myself, but have really enjoyed learning more about the archaeology of the Southeastern United States. As an archaeological field tech, I spend every day outside digging up artifacts and, even if they are a bit younger than I was originally interested in, the prehistoric finds you pick up in the Appalachians are fascinating. Finding a soapstone quarry with petroglyph-covered boulders -- incredible! Even if reaching academe is your goal, perhaps consider programs which can offer you some contemporary US/Canada/wherever-you-want-to-live courses. That way you could always work as a tech/become a project leader/work on digs in some way while you're searching for that coveted TT position later on.
  2. Just wondering if anyone's planning on going to UVA? Just got accepted but didn't receive a good funding offer -- still taking it into consideration! Anyone at UVA's Curry School have any thoughts? Thanks!
  3. Salvete/xairete! This is a post for prospective high school classics teachers. Which program are you joining and what degree will you earn?
  4. Gratias, Veilside1! Glad to hear that Arizona serves its students well. What is your emphasis? I'm very excited at the prospect of going there, but a little nervous, since my offer letter states that my funding is contingent on the department's funding. I'm a little worried I'll get there and they'll take away the funding offer! Anyway, thanks for the response, and I might message you with more questions!
  5. Thanks to both of you! The MA programs I'm considering include some pedagogical training because they give you an MA plus licensure. As long as I get some real world teaching experience with the program, I think I should be ok . . . Thanks for the tip, ArthurEvans, about getting in some methodology. By the way, Frostfire, I see your location is SFSU. Did you consider their Classics grad program? Or maybe you studied there for undergrad? Honestly, I don't know anything about SFSU's program, but I a couple SFSU students at the last AIA/APA joint annual meeting. Thoughts on the classics graduate program? Just curious -- thanks!
  6. Any thoughts on Tufts' secondary ed program? Also, talked to someone at Virginia's Curry School today. They should be sending out emails to applicants next week, in case anyone's still waiting to hear from them!
  7. I'll probably hold out till the last day. I want to get my funding finalized and double check that I'm not going to hate living where my top choice is!
  8. Considering going to U of Arizona for its MA program, with an emphasis in Latin pedagogy. Any thoughts on Arizona's program for an aspiring high school Latin teacher? Thanks!
  9. Hey y'all! I'm trying to pick from my acceptances, and I keep coming back to this question: would it be better to get an M.A.T. or an M.A.? I also have another dilemma. A couple of my MA/MAT programs are offered through education departments, so I would take more education and less classics courses. My other programs are offered through classics departments, so I would take more classics and less education courses. Any advice or opinions? I'm ready to become a high school Latin teacher, but this April 15 deadline is making me nervous! Gratias, Philomeides
