I think you're also compared to others in similar fields as well; so it's hard to make direct comparisons across the sciences, i.e. physics vs biology vs chemistry, etc... I bet you each field has different cut offs

Also, there are a lot of people here that seem to think you need a lot of publications for NSERC, last year a friend with 1 first author conference paper, a second author submitted journal and a few large multi-author government publications won CGS3D. Mind you they had a lot of other amazing achievements, but first author journals aren't everything.

They announce CGS and PGS at the same time, you could potentially be upgraded if enough people turn down the CGS (i think).

Barely a difference between PGS and OGS, and a lot of people get OGS. Plus if you're in your first year you can apply for PGSM again. Not all bd news!

Don't feel discouraged, every person has a unique history (academic, research, leadership) and no one here can tell you how the review will turn out.

I wish I could forget about all of this and just be suprised when I get something from NSERC in the mail. I am literally obsessing over this.
