Canadian Universities MSW. The waiting game 2012 admissions
Laurie S. replied to MSW13's topic in Social Workers Forum
Thanks KK. I'm pretty sure that York must be the same. It's frustrating that either admissions or the School of Social Work is providing incorrect information (Social Work department confirmed at the end of March that there was nothing else I needed to send and that my application was being reviewed). Sorry for the rant. It's just one of those days Also, I actually live in Toronto, not Waterloo. I did my BA primarily through distance education so I'm really hoping to get into a school in TO so that I can actually meet my classmates. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all a bit better through the FB group. And maybe those in Toronto area will be able to meet-up sometime in the city for a coffee/tea and a natter. -

I'm at a loss for words with York. I contacted the admissions department again today. I was told that my application will not be reviewed until I present my transcript showing that I have graduated with my 4-year honours degree. I won't have completed the requirements until sometime end of June. I always thought that admissions were made and then you had to present your degree prior to the start of the term? Is there anyone else who's applied who is finishing their degree this year? I'm so confused right now. Am I wrong about this? U of Waterloo has accepted me into their program and I don't have to provide proof of convocation until August. I've sent an e-mail to the Department of Social Work but I really have a feeling that my application is gathering dust on a shelf somewhere. I'm so frustrated at this process and I'm no longer sure that I even want to be accepted to a school that suffers from such disorganization between and within departments. If my application is rejected, I plan on appealing for a refund of the application fee. I don't think that my application has been given a fair review, given all the problems and administrative errors so far. I guess I'm not at as much of a loss for words as I thought. Ha, ha. But ... grrr ... I'm not happy about any of this. -

I'm looking forward to working with you all one day, in the field of social work. Our dedication and perseverance and desire to get into this program say something about the kind of social workers we're all going to be one day -

I hope it wasn't an administrative error like on mine. Did you call and ask why you were declined? -

When did you get declined from York's MSW? Was it in the first round in January? Well, another day ... another week gone by, and still NO NEWS from York. I tried calling the School of Social Work's general number and no one answers. The only option is to leave a message. They're probably avoiding taking calls because they know how how frustrated we all are. Was originally told decisions by the end of April, and then 2-weeks ago they said decisions in 1 to 2 weeks. According to the results on My File, it seems their average processing time is one application every three weeks. They're making the feds look good ... lol! Got my first package of information from U of Waterloo today. They've always amazed me at Renison College (U of W) with their willingness to go the extra-mile to make sure that students needs are met -

*sigh* More results have been posted for York's 2-year MSW. One person got notification on MyFile that they were accepted on May 9 and another one today. Still no change for me. -

I'd definitely like that! Are you thinking of a group on here? Or something separate, like a Facebook group? -

Maybe they're moving to make more space to accept all us into the program -

Better location, though! I see from their new address that they've moved to the Ross Building, which is much more central than the Kinsmen building. It'll be near the library and York Lanes (and the buses) -

Hmm. Might explain why it's impossible to get through on the phone. I tried calling the department secretary today, Gina Bosso, and I just get a message saying the mailbox is full and it won't take messages or transfer the call. I called the admissions office today and the woman I spoke with could only tell me that my application is still with the School of Social Work. She said that the MSW program and one other (Psych, I think) get more applications than any of their other programs. I asked her if it is possible that, at this point, my application has not been successful and I'm just waiting to see an update in MyFile. She said no, and that it's good that it's still with the department as that means I still have a chance. Unfortunately, she couldn't tell me how many students are being admitted for 2012 (seriously, why can't they answer that?) neither does she know how many people have already been admitted. -

At the top of this page, underneath the grad cafe logo, there is a row of links. Click on the "results search." You can look up both York and Calgary. -

I applied for the part-time BSW program at U of Waterloo in mid-March and found out today I was accepted. How come U of W can process applications in less than 2 months? They still had to review my statement of interest, 3 references and CV. Can't imagine what is taking York so long While this route will take me an extra year, I'm confident that I won't have any administrative BS to deal with. Just saw on the results page that someone received an acceptance letter for York's 2-year program on May 7, 2012 and the letter was dated April 19. What can be so difficult about going into MyFile and updating to accepted or unsuccessful? Surely, at this point, they must be finished reviewing the applications. They've had them for months. -

York's tweeted response to me was about "rolling admissions." And I had no idea what that meant until I looked it up and learned it means that seats are filled throughout the admissions process. Then it means we might still have a chance. Oh bother. I don't do well with this kind of suspense. -

Thanks. I think I was probably a little over confident about getting in. But, as kk_2012 said, they're liking putting weight on the Statement of Interest. And maybe mine wasn't good. I admit, I struggled with it; never having done one before, I had no idea what they're looking for. My son is just finishing his final year at York and doesn't have anything good to say about the admin. He got departmental permission in September to enroll in a thesis course and he's been working on it all year with his professor. But, 10 months later, admin still hasn't "enrolled" him in it, in spite of numerous attempts on his part. They just keep telling him it will be done ... in 1 to 2 weeks, no doubt. -

Thanks Thumper! You're so nice to keep thinking of us And, by the way, I was also initially rejected from York in January. When I called admissions to enquire, I was told that it was because I hadn't graduated with my 4-year degree yet. I told her, of course I hadn't ... I'll be graduating in the spring. She told me - she actually insisted this to be true - that you can't apply in your last year, you can only apply the next year. After an incredibly frustrating conversation with her, I hung up and called and spoke with someone else. She could hardly believe what the other woman had told me. In the end, it turned out to be an administrative error in calculating my final 2-years average. OMG, I'm so glad I called or else I would have completely wasted my application fee. At least now, even if I don't get accepted, I feel better knowing my application was fairly reviewed. -

I hate to say it but I think we're all safe to assume that we're not likely getting into York. From everything I've read so far, we must be on a waiting list. What other explanation makes sense given that acceptances have gone out as early as end of March (one poster said they received an offer March 29)? We're just left waiting to see if people don't accept their offer. Even then, we have no idea of where we might be on the waiting list. York's program is suffering from a terrible lack of transparency. They should have let us know back when initial offers went out that we were on a wait list. At least that way, people could make informed decisions on what their next steps should be. -

In other news, I applied for a part-time BSW program at U of W. Application deadline was mid-March. Offers will go out sometime next week or the week after (and when they tell me that, I actually do believe them). If anyone is interested, they have an application deadline of July 5 for a January 2013 start. The program is offered in a "multi-modal" format" (some classes on campus in the evenings and some on-line with at least one weekend class on campus). They also have an optional "international experience" in Mexico. It takes 2 years to complete. U of W is also just starting up a 1-year on-line MSW program, with two 1-week summer blocks on campus. Both taken together could take a minimum of 3-years. I've been a student of U of W and this school comes highly recommend by me. At times they've bent over backwards to help me succeed and if this is the route I take, even though it'll be an additional year, I know it'll be without administrative hassle. -

Thanks for the info! I imagined the process went pretty much like you described. So, based on your experience, do you think they picked "x" number of people who met the requirements and now they're wrangling over the final spots? Or do you think that all acceptances have gone out and we're just on some sort of waiting list? -

Tweeted response is: "Grad offers go out on a rolling basis until the program is full so it's hard to say specifically when you'll hear back." LOL. So, rolling response? I guess that means they send out acceptances and wait to hear back and when some people decline the offer they send out more acceptances? -
