  1. And, while we're waiting to hear back from York, here's a little something to help pass the time http://www.watching-grass-grow.com/
  2. I don't get then how some people have been admitted if they haven't finished making decisions? If they only enroll 20ish people each year, why are they not finishing their review before they start accepting people?? What if they get to my application and think that I have absolutely everything they're looking for but too bad they already filled the class. I certainly hope they're not going alphabetically or I'm screwed. This is very frustrating. I have 20 years related experience, a degree in social development, 9 social work courses at the undergrad level, stats and research courses including a 4th year research apprenticeship, and 2 certificates of social work. If I don't get in, I really don't know what I can do over the next year to improve my application.
  3. I was originally "rejected" back in January when Admissions miscalculated my A- average to a C-. What a lot of work that was to get sorted out!
  4. Hmmm. I assume the School of Social Work has finished at their end and they send everything back to Admissions and it's their responsibility to inform us. My experience with the admissions dept has not been great so far, so nothing would surprise me. Looking back on old posts on this forum, in previous years some people didn't find out until closer to the middle of May.
  5. Hi LOLBRBY2K, I understand and feel the same as you and would like to get official word either through MyFile, e-mail, or letter. Knowing that acceptances have gone out as early as the beginning of April, I've lost my earlier confidence. However, I knew there would be tough competition and I'm so pleased for those who've got in I have also applied to a part-time BSW program and I think I should get accepted as places are no where near as limited. Hopefully, with a BSW, I'll be able to get into a 1-year MSW program. Plan B will take an extra year but maybe that's just what I need to make me a better social worker when I do finally get there
  6. Hi Candina, You might not get the answers you're looking for here about the PhD program, because we've all applied for various Master of Social Work programs. It is a very helpful site, though, and I'm sure if you poke around the other threads you'll find a group that is discussing your program. Good luck with getting into your program
  7. Way to go! You must be so excited. I know I will be when the time comes!
  8. Congratulations! It's great to hear that people are hearing back. I've still not seen any change in MyFile but, hopefully, I'll know one way or another tomorrow or Monday. It will be good to stop fretting about it. I'd really love to get accepted into the program but I've still got plan B
  9. Sorry to hear about the rejection but happy that you've already accepted an offer How did you hear back from York about the rejection? Was it via MyFIle or through mail?
  10. I was told we should be notified by mail, by the end of the month. I keep checking the status of MyFile, but it took them about 3 weeks to update the status of one of my references so I bet we'll get notified by mail first.
  11. No, they definitely say they've been accepted to the 2-year program, not the 1-year advanced one. And I confirmed with one of them earlier on this thread.
  12. I've been told the same thing by York but I'm really confused by the selection process, as two people have posted in the results that they've been accepted into the York 2-year MSW program. How is it that some people are accepted when we've been told that they haven't finished reviewing applications? Could it be that they did their undergrad degree with York, and get priority admittance? Or maybe their applications just shone out from the rest? Makes me nervous to know some are already accepted, as now we have no idea how many spots are actually left for the rest of us.
  13. Yes, congrats to everyone for being accepted and/or making it this far. The important thing is to have some great social workers out there helping to make the world a better place for us all
  14. I've tried, unsuccessfully, to find specific details about number of applications and number of admitted students. I've heard that York U gets about 400-500 applications for the 2-year MSW program and accepts about 20. And for U of T and York advanced standing MSW, I've heard they accept about 50-60 students each year. This is all "through the grapevine." The schools don't seem to post this information on their websites.
  15. Well, I'm a bit of a professional student at this point. Started my BA when I was 19, completed it when I was 40 (single-parenthood intervened). Even after I graduated with my BA, I kept taking courses with the intent of getting a 2nd BA. Now, this year, I'm upgrading my 3-year BA to a 4-year honours degree. I figure it's time to leave undergraduate studies behind now ... lol. But, as mentioned, if I don't get into the 2 year MSW program, I'll be an undergrad for another 2 years to get my BSW. Figure that will up my chances of getting into grad school. This waiting is killing me.
  16. Thanks, Nala, for reminding us of this! I've applied to the 2-year program but I also applied for a BSW program as back up. I feel very confident that I'll get accepted into that one, so at least I'll still be on the path even if it will take a wee bit longer. I know I'll feel disappointed if I don't get accepted into the 2-year MSW but I also realize that I could still be a top contender and not necessarily make it into the top 20. We should all be proud of ourselves for having made it this far. We've got a BA, we've got at least a B+ average in our studies, and we've got experience. The field of social work awaits us, just may take a little more time than we hope And, heck, I'm 46 already, so what's an extra year or two?
  17. Hey Stephanie, don't feel bad about not hearing back from York yet. Gina, the department secretary, said we'll know by the end of the month. I'm surprised to hear that one person has received an acceptance letter from them already, as I know they haven't finished reviewing the applications. But I'll wait another 3 weeks before I start to feel panicked A number of people have referred to a "survey page." Can someone please tell me what that is? Laurie
  18. Congrats on your acceptance! If I don't get in and need to re-apply for 2013, would you mind if I speak with your further to see what criteria you met and what I might be missing? Still keeping my fingers crossed but I know that the odds are low due to the small class they accept every year.
  19. I know some people are reporting having received offers of admission for York's MSW program. Are these offers for the 1-year or 2-year program? I've applied for the 2-year program and been told by the department that offers won't be mailed out until the end of April. I believe that the 1-year program receives offers first. Of course I've checked York's MyFile obsessively every day since I applied in December. Really glad I did check, though, as I found out in January that I was declined. I called them to follow-up as I didn't understand why I was rejected so early in the game. If I hadn't called them, I wouldn't have discovered that they made a mistake in calculating my GPA (they calculated it at "C" which is below the minimum requirement, and my actual average is "A-"). After about a week, I was able to get them to fix the error and I was put back in the application process. Subsequently, I was nearly removed again because they said I'd only submitted two references, when in fact I'd submitted three (and MyFile showed they'd all been received). After another worrying week, they found they had all three references. If anyone received a rejection, I'd suggest a follow-up just to ensure that it wasn't due to an administrative error.
