  1. Man, you really hit the nail on the head with your line on wanting to finish on time! I do want to finish on time, and I definitely believe that I can. But with one year done and one year to go, it's hard to see that finish line. And I can definitely sympathize with your position before this 'slump' - I was working 24 hours a week at a federal government job & going to school full-time & T.A-ing full time. I got way more done then than I ever get done now. My major problem is time management, I have lived most of my life always going, going, going - from school to a soccer game to a rugby practice, or whatever the case may be. I have also always worked while I was in school, without fail. But now with this SSHRC scholarship, my supervisor doesn't even want me to T.A anymore, and the department took away my R.A work because I got external funding. And to be honest, it really sucks. I am more than grateful to have won an SSHRC, but now I don't even have work to look forward to (or not look forward, as is sometimes the case). Now I have months and months of essentially unstructured time, and I have no idea what to do with myself.
  2. Hey all! So, I'm having a real tough time getting motivated to do any work this summer. In fact, since May. It's now July. To be fair, I just got back from a three-week vacation in Europe, so it's a bit hard to go back to doing school work, but I felt like this before I left too. It's not anything about my program. I have a 4.0, a great supervisor, and I just won a SSHRC. I like my subject matter (but I don't outright love it), and I've got a couple side-projects too. I'm training for half-marathons and longer races, and I play two sports. I'm not depressed, just... unmotivated. Completely. I haven't really accomplished much in ages. One of the main issues with me is timelines. I love deadlines, I work best when I have them. But grad school, especially now that I don't T.A and don't take classes, has less and less timelines than before. I try to set them for myself, but it doesn't always work. Has anyone else experienced this (or is still experiencing this?). I don't want to quit, I'm invested in my work, but man do I not want to do it. Thanks for any advice or help you guys can offer!
  3. Successful in AB! Not much in the way of stats - 3.9 GPA in undergrad, 4.0 grad school. Dean's List, several minor scholarships, a few major scholarships (Millennium, Killam, etc.). A few TAships, no publications. I applied through my university (I'm halfway through my program). Good luck to everyone else still waiting out there!
  4. I'm in Edmonton too. I was really hoping for today... but I guess another day of mailbox stalking is in order for tomorrow. And no rejection talk! Keep those hopes high!
  5. anybody out west get theirs yet? I'm sitting with my Methods articles in front of me, accomplishing nothing but refreshing this forum...
  6. Hey all - I'm in AB, and nothing in the mail today for me. Maybe tomorrow for us Western Canadians?
  7. I know, isn't it awful? I spoke to my grad coordinator yesterday and she commiserated with me over the wait - she told me that SSHRC is so far behind the technological present that it's nearly impossible for them to catch up. I know I'm supposed to be happy about the possibility of federal funding, but this is ridiculous. Just tell me yes or no!!!
  8. I think it's fair of us to sacrifice funding for our education to cater to a monarch from a country that often doesn't even realize she's our monarch too... (But I digress... now we continue the waiting game...)
  9. Totally. Budget cuts at work (federal gov employee), and at school? I guess so. Yay economic downturns! Haha.
  10. Looks like there are possibly less doctoral awards this year, if the news in their thread is anything to go on. Does anyone know if the total number of Master's SSHRCs decreased this year?
  11. Thanks for the heads up! I was figuring May anyway... but it didn't stop me hoping for April...
  12. Thank you so much for the quick reply! I won't bank on it, but it will be a very happy day if I get that letter in the mail. Thanks again!
  13. Hey all! First poster here - I've been lurking around the site for a while, but I had a quick question that I had to ask: do you know what kind of success rate applied-through-university applicants have? I was forwarded onward by my university to Ottawa, but now I have no idea if it's a 50/50 crapshoot, or something else? Thanks so much, and good luck to everyone!
