  1. I've been admitted to programs at both SC and Drexel, though slightly different ones. Obviously, times-a-wastin' and I need to cement a decision in the very near future! The program at South Carolina is an MS in Environmental Public Health, while at Drexel I applied to the MPH in Environmental and Occupational Health. Clearly, they're different degrees, but they're also vastly different programs and schools. I'd appreciate any insight on which school might be preferable and the differences in professional and future doctoral possibilities with either option. Thank you for your feedback!
  2. Hi, I'm doing an MS in Environmental Health Science, but it still falls under the school of public health and I'm hoping to do the public health certificate as part of my masters. What specialty are you in?
  3. I agree, the categories aren't quite adequate. My husband is active duty army and will be deployed roughly half the time I'm completing my masters about 3 hours away from our house. We lived 2 hours apart the first year we dated and I taught abroad In Chile for four months after that. Periodic separation is really just part of life for us. He'll go back to school when his enlistment is finished in two years and we'll move wherever that takes us (but together!). We're not considering kids for another four years, I can't imagine trying to deal with that right now.

    Columbia, SC

I'm an NC native and know a few people from Cola. They report that it's a bit insular, but there are definitely liberals in Columbia and even a Unitarian church downtown in Rose Hill. I think the grad school environment will be similar to other schools. I'll be moving down there this fall and plan to spend somewhere between 450 to 550 to share a 2 or 3 bed/1 bath house with one room mate plus utilities (assuming I can find a room mate). Craigslist is a great place to get a handle on costs for the area. I saw garage apartments in the Shandon neighborhood for around 600-700. I can't give you much input on the public transit situation. I have a car, but I'm planning to bike/walk to class if possible.
