GRE scores are the least important part of an application. What is more important is your previous research experience, letters, classes/GPA, and statement of purpose. Your GRE scores are fine, don't worry too much about them, they should not be the reason you don't apply. I interviewed at UNC for BBSP last winter, and am now a student, if you have any specific questions feel free to PM me.

Don't worry about it, the more important thing is that you have research experience and know how to do science in general. A PhD is actually a great place to switch your research interests, and people may switch again for their postdoc.

I applied to 10 biology PhD programs last fall that were all generally the same level and in hindsight I feel like it was too much. I declined two interview invitations because I realized I didnt actually want to go there. Try to be careful and ask, if this school was the only one you got into, would you be satisfied in going there? so maybe 5-10 schools based on how likely you are to be admitted.

If you think your chances are not great you could wait another year to improve your application, doing things like continuing your research experience. And it is not impossible to get in with a 3.0, there is a thread around here somewhere called "3.0 acceptance thread" or something to that effect, so people have done it.

Same here, is the Chapel Hill/Carborro are leasing starting soon? Any advice would be appreciated

I'm heading to UNC for the biolology and biomedical program

I'll be going to UNC-Chapel Hill BBSP! So glad for this whole process to be over

I applied to 10, which seems to be high and in hindsight, at least 3 were poor fits that I should have never applied to.

Same feelings as all of you, I just want to choose and get this over with . I think I will go with my gut, for what originally was not my first choice but really impressed me.
-
same here, I've interviewed and been accepted at some schools that in hindsight are not a good match for me

worry more about getting solid research experience and the letters that come with it proclaiming your research readiness. They are far more important than whatever glorified GPA number you can come up with

You could try volunteering for a professor over the summer (and continue in the school year if you don't transfer??) in their lab to get research experience, you don't need to join some official program. I've never done some official REU for a summor, just volunteered to work in a lab. Depending on the professor they most likely won't require letters. When I initially volunteered for a lab, all they wanted was a resume. I did need to contact several professors though, several had full labs and couldn't take on any undergrads. Just look up your faculty directory and email profs you are interested in. There are jobs for bio phds, you just need to realize that not everyone gets tenure track, other people go into industry, teaching colleges, government etc

The number one thing to learn about grad school is to get involved in lab research, as soon as you can in a meaningful capacity (not just washing glassware). GPA and GRE are secondary to research experience, which should come first if you intend to go for graduate studies. If you want to look out for students, that sounds more like a counseling postion, and getting a research degree (PhD) is not a very good path for that.

This happened to me as well, and the last 5-10minutes were a little awkward as I ran out of prepared questions I wanted to ask. I ended up asking some generic questions and the responses were not helpful at all.

Accepted to Northwestern IBIS

Yes, and I had interviews already booked on both their interview times. UT Austin offered Skype as an alternative, but since it was low on my list already I just said thanks but no thanks.
-
There are going to be two interview times, 2/28-3/1 and one later in march, I can't remember what the prof said the second was off the top of my head. I'll let you know once they send the official follow up email.

Just got an interview for UC Davis BMCDB if anyone else is waiting for them. I also brought a pocket sized notebook to my first interview but I felt it would have been a bit rude to whip it out and start writing in the middle of an interview.
-
I was invited for BCDB interview back in December, and I think some other departments in GDBBS have sent out invitations as well. Check out the results page.

Good luck interviewers maybe you could share some insights for the rest of us when you get back.

PhD in Bio, mediocre grades, good GRE, no bio lab experience, too late?
mop replied to JasonTea's topic in Applications
The big issue is lack of research experience. It might be better for you to wait until you have some experience before applying, as it is usually the most important factor. PhD programs are many years of research and schools don't want to take on someone without experience in case you find out a year or two in that you actually hate doing research. -
If you are getting a masters, there is less likely to be funding, the funding mentioned is pretty much a guarentee for a PhD. You should look at each master program individual to see what kind of funding is available, don't assume all of them have funding

I just got this too but have the same problem, already have another on 2/14. Do you think they have a second date maybe, and only offer one of them?
-
Nice Erbbi3, thats a good problem to have

I haven't heard anything back from UCLA ACCESS, have you?
