  1. I live in the DMV and I'm considering an offer for a position that is on average 40K for a recent hire with 0-2 years experience. I expect them to make a starting offer that's lower. How do I negotiate without seeming bullish? I'm grateful for the job but I also expect to make a decent wage.

  2. Thanks for the responses! The questions were more an effort to get a conversation going rather than anything specific I wanted to address. I've started the application process and I'm flexible about where I'm willing to go.

  3. For Current Peace Corps Volunteers, Alums, and Applicants. Let's talk about the application process, the pro/cons of deployment and what opportunities (grad & career wise) were like after your return.

  4. In major disbelief: I was moved from alternate to principle status for the full grant to Croatia

Joy? Yes joy, right?! Other-worldliness if anything...

Good luck to all alternates, oh how I understand the pain of limbo; just know that if you even applied for this behemoth, you are probably a qualified candidate for many great opportunities.

    Congrats!

  5. Well, this is an old question, and I see that you've already made your plans, but for others in the same position - you will most likely not get a job until after you graduate. If you go to school in DC or nearby, you may be able to start applying in the spring, but no one will want to hire you more than a month before you can start. And you *really* have to be in DC to get considered for these jobs - it's all about pounding the pavement. You should also expect to look for at least 6 months before finding a job, especially on the Hill. It may be less, but it's good to be prepared.

Thanks for the advice Politicalgeek! You're right about no one wanting to hire more than a month before starting or even non-DC residents. I've been trying to secure a job/internship from afar for months now. I finally decided to secure housing for the summer ( I did - for 350 a month if you can believe it) and I'm working on getting a canvassing job on a political campaign. Maybe with that experience it'll be easier for me to ease into staffing jobs or Congressional internships in the Fall.

  6. I turned down my Fulbright award to accept another fellowship for travel to the same country. It was the strangest feeling. I never in my wildest dreams imagined myself declining a Fulbright. Ever. But I'm glad this means that an alternate will receive it. Best of luck to everyone!

Congrats on getting another fellowship that made turning down a Fulbright worthwhile. Which country are you going to?

  7. Hey, thanks for the alert. Yeah, I can revert back to an old version of the spreadsheet.. how long ago do you think it happened?

No idea, but I noticed it was a problem two days ago.

  8. Hey Mole, I updated the spreadsheet with your stat. If you want to look at it and make sure I got it right, it's under Spain. Also, out of curiosity, what part of the country are you in? I'm a Spain finalist in Ohio and still haven't heard anything..

Sally someone messed up all of the notification dates for South/Central Asia. Can you go into your database and fix it? I feel bad for all of the Fulbright South/Central Asia finalists for next year.

  9. I just got an email from Rachel Holskin. I'm guessing it was sent to all Alternates. I don't remember the Alternates from last year saying that they received this email. Did anyone else in Europe get this?

    "Greetings,

As you have been identified as an alternate for a 2010-2011 Fulbright grant within the Europe/Eurasia region, we would like to request that you save the following dates in the event you are promoted from alternate status. If you are selected to receive a Fulbright grant, you will be required to attend the following mandatory pre-departure orientation in Washington, D.C. before you leave for your grant......"

  10. My friend who was notified that she was an Alternate for Morocco in March just called me! Funding became available and she's now Accepted for Principal status. She's over the moon and so am I. Hoping the same for Lithuania.

  11. Do you mind linking to the forum/spreadsheet from last year? I'm interested!

Here's the forum: They didn't have a spreadsheet. I suppose we could make one but it wouldn't be as accurate as ours.

  12. I noticed on the spreadsheet and last year's Fulbright forum that the time line for Alternates to Acceptance can vary. From two weeks to a month. I also called Rachel to find out about the Alternate wait list for Lithuania. I'm one of two for the country but she couldn't give me a ranking system.

  13. I found this article about people who turn down the Fulbright grant: http://ow.ly/177j27. It was a pretty relevant and interesting read.

    First paragraph -

"A friend of mine recently turned down the prestigious Fulbright grant because it became clear in the period between her initial application and the award of the grant that her family obligations in the United States would not allow her to fulfill Fulbright’s requirement that she spend the entirety of the one year term of the grant abroad. In part her receipt of a more flexible grant that would still allow her to undertake her dissertation research took some of the sting away from this wrenching decision, but it still raises the question of whether grants like the Fulbright should require such an extended period of residency. I do not deny that there are advantages to spending an long period of time in the country of one has chosen to research. Potential benefits include a deeper understanding of culture and perhaps language that comes only through time and the building of local relationships, which can be particularly crucial for oral history projects. However, the reality is that archival research no longer requires the kind of long term residence that it might have in the days before digital photography and online searchable catalogues."

  14. I am brand new to gradcafe.... so I'm not sure how to navigate. I recently found out that I received a Fulbright for Mali! Where can I find/update the spreadsheet? I have been trying to sift through old posts, but there are just so many! Anyone else headed to West Africa? Congrats to all those recipients and best of luck (and patience) to those still waiting!

    -A

    Congrats S'moore! Here's the spreadsheet - https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=taWW8xiKve1Tm6Ow6bHdhYA&hl=en

  15. I found out that I'm an alternate yesterday. I'm treating it like a rejection and moving on. Good luck to everyone still waiting.

Which Baltic country did you apply to? I don't see you on the spreadsheet.

  16. HAS ANYONE BEEN TAKEN OFF THE ALTERNATE LIST...and received a grant?

I hate waiting and being an alternate I get to enjoy the next month doing just that. FML.

A UK and Moldova Alternate moved to Principal status. Both within a week of receiving their Alternate letter.

  17. I'm the Israel person who you've all been chatting about.

I am a Postdoctoral Research Fulbright grantee--I suspect that you are in a different division of the Israel applications--in other words you applied for a different type of award, and therefore have not heard yet. I have already received information about the pre-departure orientation for the Middle East, and my grantee agreement has been signed and returned.

I'm not just some jerk who is posting fake information on the spreadsheet--this would be silly.

I'm sure you'll hear something soon.

    Good luck,

    Franko

Thanks for clearing up the confusion Franko!

  18. That sounds like a really interesting project, why did you choose Lithuania to study this specific topic?

I knew I wanted to study post-conflict resolution and minority integration in Europe. It came down to Lithuania and the Netherlands. Vilnius U. has a Masters in War and Peace Studies program that I can complete in 10 months. The same program in the Netherlands costs more and is longer in duration.

  19. @Sally Maybe it times out after a certain period. I can't edit my post from 11:52am today but I can still edit the 3:02pm. Or it could be that you can't edit any post before the last one.

  20. R. Holskin said in an email to me (Lithuania Fulbright Research) she is mailing things today. Will know soon!!!

Double yay! The first for mailing things today not tomorrow. The second for having another Lithuania Fulbright finalist. Where are you affiliated at and what's your project? Me - Vilnius University & the political integration of ethnic minorities

Re Mailboxes: I'm holding down my current address and I've got my teenage sister bribed to check the permanent one. It's worked with other notifications.
